I knew I should've listened to my mommy instinct! (Flu shot related)
I really didn't want to give DS the flu shot. Even though Im asthmatic, I've never gotten it. All of the peopl I know that get it end up sick within a few days. I talked to the ped. about this and he said people getting sick after is a falasy. The ped. did not make me feel pressured, but on some level I felt like maybe DS should get it. Well, he did and he woke up at 4am SICK!! He has the croup cough and is very congested. He might have a fever but he finally fell asleep and I don't want to wake him. I will check him when he gets up. SO FRUSTRATING!!!
just to clarify....DS GOT the shot and is now sick.

So you didn't wind up getting it and DS is sick?
I hope he feels better. What did the Ped say to do? You can still get the flu shot for him, but you have to wait till he's better.

I think he did get the shot and then he got sick.
In any case, I don't think it's from the flu shot so don't blame yourself-it's probably just a coincidence.
If anything, it's probably from being at the ped which is a very germy place-what with all the sick kiddos this time of year. But what can you do?

I have to say I'm sorry but I agree with this. Also it takes 2 weeks to get immunity to the flu shot so you can still get the flu (well the strain you were vaccinated for) during that time.
While it is HORRIBLE that he is sick and I hope he feels better soon I think you can probably count on the fact that it is not from the shot. I certainly wouldn't beat yourself up for giving it to him. Horrible timing and a bad coincidence but I honestly don't believe it was directly from the vaccine.
How long ago did you give it? Remember many things have a 2-10 incubation period so he could have picked something up anywhere from a class to the doctors office.
I hope he has a speedy recovery

I agree that it is just a coincidence. the flu shot doesn't make you sick anyway - the virus is dead.

It is just a coincidence. He picked up something from somewhere else, but did not get sick from the flu shot. Don't question yourself - you gave him protection from a serious illness.
I hope he feels better soon!

Re: I knew I should've listened to my mommy instinct! (Flu shot related)
This is NOT a myth, not false and I can;'t stand when the peds say this.
A COMMON reaction to the flu shot is FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS. Why? The immune response is ACTING like you have the flu, duh, that's the point for your body to build up immunity.
Sure, you don't actually HAVE active virus particles in you. BUT you do have the reaction to the vaccine that MIMICS what you would have if you had the real flu. Hence, the immune response. So it's not false.
I got the flu shot ONCE years ago. I was feverish, flu like for almost 2 mths. Almost the whole winter. It was definitely the flu shot, it was NOT coincidence and so that's why I never get it anymore (and haven't given it to DD). I could never risk feeling so under the weather for such a long time and worry my baby would have a similar reaction. I felt AWFUL for a long long time...I was worried I would never go back to normal. I know it was my immune response the vaccine and i won't do that to my body again.
SO yes, it is NOT a coincidence. It's the reaction to the flu shot. I hope your DS feels better soon and this doesn't last too long.

I agree. I had the flu shot three times in my life because I was told that there was no way the shot was making me sick and it made me sick all three times...

Re: I knew I should've listened to my mommy instinct! (Flu shot related)
This is what your son is likely experiencing. So no, he doesn't have the "flu" but he is responding to the vaccine with flu like symptoms.
Here is a direct excerpt from FDA pamphlet on their website for flu shot.
In placebo-controlled studies among adults, the most frequent side effect of vaccination is soreness at the vaccination site (affecting 10%–64% of patients) that lasts <2 days, local pain and swelling. These local reactions typically are mild. Fever, malaise, myalgia, and other systemic symptoms can occur following vaccination and most often affect persons who have had no prior exposure to the influenza virus antigens in the vaccine (e.g., young children). These reactions begin 6–12 hours after vaccination and can persist for 1–2 days.
Children The 2003-2004 formulation of Fluzone vaccine was studied in 19 children 6 to 23 months of age and in 12 children 24 to 36 months of age, given in 2 doses one month apart. Local reactions and systemic events were solicited for 3 days after each dose. Most local and systemic reactions were mild. The proportions of local and systemic reactions in children were similar to the proportions in adults. No reported local or systemic reaction required a therapeutic intervention other than analgesics. (3) 6. 2. Post-Marketing Experience Page 6 of 17 sanofi pasteur 05 June 2009_v1A 271/371 – Fluzone® LE5804-5806 The following additional events have been reported during post-approval use of Fluzone vaccine. Because these events are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to vaccine exposure. Blood and Lymphatic System Disorders: Thrombocytopenia, lymphadenopathy Immune System Disorders: Anaphylaxis, other allergic/hypersensitivity reactions (including urticaria, angioedema) Nervous System Disorders: GBS, convulsions, myelitis (including encephalomyelitis and transverse myelitis), facial palsy (Bell’s palsy), optic neuritis/neuropathy, brachial neuritis, syncope (shortly after vaccination), dizziness, paresthesia Vascular Disorders: Vasculitis, vasodilation/flushing Respiratory, Thoracic and Mediastinal Disorders: Dyspnea, pharyngitis, rhinitis Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue Disorders: Stevens-Johnson syndrome Page 7 of 17 sanofi pasteur 05 June 2009_v1A 271/371 – Fluzone® LE5804-5806 General Disorders and Administration Site Conditions: Fever, pain, pruritis, asthenia/fatigue, pain in extremities, chest pain 6. 3. Other Adverse Events Associated with Influenza Vaccines Anaphylaxis has been reported after administration of influenza vaccines. Although Fluzone vaccine contains only a limited quantity of egg protein, this protein can induce immediate hypersensitivity reactions among persons who have severe egg allergy. Allergic reactions include hives, angioedema, allergic asthma, and systemic anaphylaxis. [See Contraindications (4)] The 1976 swine influenza vaccine was associated with an increased frequency of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Evidence for a causal relation of GBS with subsequent vaccines prepared from other influenza viruses is unclear. If influenza vaccine does pose a risk, it is probably slightly more than 1 additional case/1 million persons vaccinated. Neurological disorders temporally associated with influenza vaccination such as encephalopathy, optic neuritis/neuropathy, partial facial paralysis, and brachial plexus neuropathy have been reported. Microscopic polyangitis (vasculitis) has been reported temporally associated with influenza vaccination.

I am sorry, but you are wrong. The flu shot can give MILD flu symptoms, like aches and pains, and maybe a low-grade fever - and these reactions are not common. Whatever you had that year you got the shot was NOT from the vaccine. Even if you got the full-fledged flu, it would not have lasted for two months. It isn't like the inactivated virus circulates around your body endlessly causing an immune response that lasts for months. When you receive the vaccine, it stimulates your body to create antibodies against the virus. The creation of antibodies by your immune system does not make you sick. A virus or bacteria makes you sick. The antibodies make you BETTER. The way ANY vaccine works is to create antibodies - so if you come in contact with the disease the vaccine is for (influenza in this case) your immune system will "recognize" this disease and will be better able to fight it off and not make you sick.
Why would the CDC, pediatricians, any doctor LIE about the FACT that you do not get sick from the shot?? What in the world would be the motive?
Look, like its been said a million times, whether or not you want to get the flu shot or get it for your kids is entirely up to you. However, I think it is irresponsible to make statements that are untrue and present them as facts.
I also wanted to add that the chances of getting any extreme reactions to the flu vaccine (as posted above) are extremely RARE. There is a much greater risk of getting very sick and possibly dying from influenza than getting GBS or serious complications from the shot.

Not wrong. I know my body. Never had anything like that in my life, only the one timg I had the flu shot. Was not a coincidence for sure.
In addition, you said the regular flu would not even last that long. My mother had the "real" flu about 3 years ago and was sick, could not fully recover, for about 3 months. So anything is possible when it comes to individual bodies having reactions to illnesses or perceived illness (such as a vaccine).
And drs aren't "lying". They are saying the flu shot doesn't cause the flu. And I agree with that. But it does cause flu like symptoms. I don't understand why people don't understand that the reaction to vaccine is in ESSENCE the same as if they actually got sick. THAT is how they PRODUCE the antibodies.
Just as my DD got a fever from the PC vaccine, fevers and flu like symptoms are very common with vaccinations.
I just posted a link to the FDA stating exactly what I said.

I have to agree, even the FDA that you quoted said MILD reaction, something that lasts two months is definitely not MILD in my eyes...DD got a very mild cold right after her flu shot, and to be honest, I DON'T think it was from the flu shot, in fact I was at Gymboree a few days earlier with 20 kids with runny noses, so it was a coincidence that it happend to be right after the flu shot..DH has gotten the flu shot EVERY YEAR, and has he had a mild rection to it EVERY year yes, he got a little stuffy and achey for a few days but nothing severe, so yes it was mild. So do I believe you can get a reaction to it YES, would I rather DD have a mild reaction to the vaccine than get the full fledged flu and g-d forbid hospitalized with a doubt!

And again, why would drs lie? They are not lying. They are saying you can't get the FLU from the flu shot. THIS statement is true. But you can, and very commonly, get FLU like symptoms from the flu shot. Drs say you can't get the flu and this is true, and they tell people this b/c people are worried about getting the flu from the shot. But they often fail to acknowledge that people can have reactions that are very flu like. So for those who need to see this is a fact, read above pamphlet.
And we all need to keep in mind, EVERYONE's body is different. Just as some people have actually died from a flu shot reaction, many people have no reaction. So for anyone to tell someone the reaction they had CANNOT be from a flu shot is actually overlooking the reality that every body responds differently.

Right, but they are MILD reactions. You keep talking about your two month illness, which is not a mild reaction. I don't know what it was, but it was a coincidence that you had a flu shot this year.

I think you make the most valid point here. And that's one each one of have to decide. Odds are the flu itself will cause a greater more deadly reaction than the flu shot. But each person has to decide what risk is right for them. To each is own, based on our life experiences.

Again, when it comes to vaccines, there is no hard and fast rule. Everyone's bodies will respond very differently. Science isn't that controlled when it comes to the human body. So anything is possible b/c every single case varies. We are all very individual. If someone can actually DIE from a flu shot whereas someone else may have not one reaction, I do believe anything is possible and science/the meidcal community aren't that exact/foolproof.

EXACTLY!!!! I know a lot of ppl that have awful reactions to things, and honestly if that were me and my DC I think I would be more apprehensive to give it to DD, but bc I thankfully as well as DH don't have a history of reactions to things, I think the risk of getting the flu is more deadly than the side affects of the shot...

Re: I knew I should've listened to my mommy instinct! (Flu shot related)
I hope he feels better soon and if I were you I would think it was from the shot 100%.
I never gave my DS the flu shot. My DH and I never got the flu shot including our immediate family members and we never got sick. Some of our family members (aunts uncles and their kids) who got the flu shot all got sick from it actually the said they all ended up with the flu anyway. They gave it a try three seasons with the flu vaccine and they all got very sick so it didn't work for them. I'm not comforatable with getting something that is not 100% flu proof. I'm sure they try really hard to match the strain/virus of the year or whatever but even if they are a little off that shot means nothing.

Re: I knew I should've listened to my mommy instinct! (Flu shot related)

Oh I so feel you pain... I was on the fence with ds for the flu shot.... gave in, and he was sick within 24 hours, and ended up being sick for 8 days... YES I know he did not get the flu but he definitely got sick as a result of the shot.... and for the first time since he was born he ended up on antibiotics...

Not wrong. I know my body. Never had anything like that in my life, only the one timg I had the flu shot. Was not a coincidence for sure.
Thank you - your posts on these flu subjects are always right on the money. I just spoke to my friend's father who is an infectious disease specialist and he said he is flabbergasted at the misconceptions about flu/swine flu vaccines.

I also wanted to add that the chances of getting any extreme reactions to the flu vaccine (as posted above) are extremely RARE. There is a much greater risk of getting very sick and possibly dying from influenza than getting GBS or serious complications from the shot.
ITA. You can get a mild form of the flu, but not a severe form of the flu. And sometimes, there was an illness incubating before the shot was given. I have researched this also, and consulted an infectious disease specialist and as long as you receive the dead virus version of the shot, your chances of developing a full-blown case of the flu are low to none. The mist version (containing live virus) could affect people with compromised immune systems.
I have had the flu shot the last 3 years, no problems. I didn't get the shot for years though and got the flu twice. It was severe--I was on my back for several days, high fever, really couldn't do much except sleep.
So IMO, you didn't do a bad thing for your child by getting the shot. Though there obviously is lack of agreement on this topic.
