ITA. You can get a mild form of the flu, but not a severe form of the flu. And sometimes, there was an illness incubating before the shot was given. I have researched this also, and consulted an infectious disease specialist and as long as you receive the dead virus version of the shot, your chances of developing a full-blown case of the flu are low to none. The mist version (containing live virus) could affect people with compromised immune systems.

I have had the flu shot the last 3 years, no problems. I didn't get the shot for years though and got the flu twice. It was severe--I was on my back for several days, high fever, really couldn't do much except sleep.

So IMO, you didn't do a bad thing for your child by getting the shot. Though there obviously is lack of agreement on this topic.

I am not sure if you are responding to what I wrote, but if so, I said I had flu like symptoms that lasted on and off for 2 mths. I don't believe I had the flu, mild or severe. I know I had a reaction to the flu shot. When it comes to vaccines every single person will respond very differently. And that's the bottom line here, that even if you can't get the flu from the shot, you can absolutely get reactions that range from none, to mild, to severe, to death. And that's why people are hesitant and this is a topic that has a wide ranges of responses.

I firmly believe that the flu shot can cause flu like symptoms. Our bodies can still treat a dead virus like a live virus or like a foreign body. I used to get flu shots for several years. I would purposely get the shot on a Thursday or Friday because then I could stay in on the weekend. I would get a mild cold within a few days of my shot. I do not think it was coincidence. In fact, I think it's a somewhat classic flu shot reaction. I stopped getting them for a few years because I did not have time for what the shot entailed for me. Now I am hoping to get one again and one for DS. I had several of the stomach bugs that went around the past 2 seasons. They could have been flu related. I just do not want illnesses like the ones I caught the past 2 winters. I plan to speak to the allergist first to set my mind at ease b/c of DH's friend's son's death but I do not think that I can simply say no to flu shots because someone died a tragic death for reasons that are not currently clear. I think I misread your original post after reading it again, but I have never heard of flulike symptoms lasting 2 months. Maybe I'm wrong, I am no medical professional, but it sounds like you had something else.

The thing is, you say you had flulike symptoms, but was it a severe flu that lasted for two months? I do agree the vaccines can produce flulike symptoms, but that is different from contracting a full-blown flu. The statement you were disagreeing with is that the flu shot can cause the flu so I took your statement to mean exactly that. But if I misunderstood, sorry.
