i know every child is different...(question regarding speech....)
how long does it take from the moment where they point and grunt to an object to when they can actually say the word?
my dd (just turned 1) and she'll point to my cd player and make noises like "ahhhhh" when she wants me to turn it on so we can dance. () i'll always ask her music? do you want to listen to music? i'll make it easy for her and say mooo mooo moo music so it'll be something she can say but she's not "getting" it yet.
same thing with water. she'll point and say "ahhh" for the bottle of water and i'll say "agua?" (i speak spanish to her too) and she'll say agua, but i have to remind her.
anyways, i know each kid is different, but i was just wondering if there was an average time between when they point and say gibberish to when they "get" it and say the word?
TIA

i know i have read that if you are in a bilingual household, it takes longer for children to speak - because they are learning two languages...

I spoke to DD exclusively in Spanish from day 1. At 2 years old she still wasn't saying much so I switched to English, and she qualified for EI.
I think 1 is very young, and at 18 months is when most begin to actually say words...

i agree, but it almost feels like at times she's getting frustrated not being able to say what she is pointing at if its something i don't know...kinda reminds me of right before she crawled, she was really upset not being able to get to where she wanted to be. oh well. i'll enjoy it while it lasts

My 14 month old just said her first word ("ball") a few weeks ago. Perfectly within the realm of "typical".
At that age, as long as they are pointing, showing an understandiong of language, and babbling chances are they are perfectly normal.

I had DD evaluated because there was a LOT of frustration going on here at both ends.
But yeah....now it's like living with a narrator -- she talks allll day...

I think the frustration she's expressing is totally normal. DD was a big time screamer right before her first real word explosion at around 16-17 months.
She's about to be 2 and honestly I can't remember when she really started speaking (aside from her very first word) but I know she started learning words somewhat on the early side.

Re: i know every child is different...(question regarding speech....)
My kids say very few words(almost 14 months) I think it is normal. Like Kara said I think 18 mos is when they start saying real words and using them properly. Ronan says snack my snack night night da da mama baba ball bananna
Declan uses signs much more then Ronan-he signs all done and more(i think) says: bananna snack woof(he says it VA but thats what he means) Mama
So you can see Ronan has more words than Declan

I think 12 months is still very young, DS is 14 months and only says mama, dada, baba, buh bye, hi, bubble, up, no, ho ho ho (when sees santa) and apple. He tries saying other things which I understand but someone else wouldn't know what he was saying. Everything else he wants he points to or hands to me.

Yup... one of the reasons we aren't speaking to Alexa a lot in Spanish YET...... Once she starts speaking in English I'll talk to her more in Spanish.. My mom will only talk to her in Spanish so she gets some immersion...
My DH's co-workers daughter were being spoken 3 languages when they were little... they didn't really start talking until almost 2 but they were tri lingual... at 5 and 3 they actually can speak 4 different languages....
I wouldn't worry

Re: i know every child is different...(question regarding speech....)
As long as what she says is an approximation of what the real word is, and is used consistently, it can be counted as a word. I work with MANY SLPs and ask them questions about speech development in babies all the time. For example, Abby says "moh" when she wants "more" but she says it EVERY time. I count it as a word. R's are one of the last letters for kids to get. Abby has 30+ words that are intelligible and used consistently. She is 16 months, but yes, every child is different.
