Re: I know this might be a diffcult question to answer but...

DH and I talked about this early on my pg and we decided that we would do the prenatal testing, but regardless of the outcome, we would have the baby. The only reason that we did the testing so that we could be prepared in case. We had a friend who they found out while she was pg that her daughter would have downs syndrome and a heart defect. They researched cardiac surgeons so that a surgeon would be in the room when she was giving birth so that if her daughter needed surgery right away they would be prepared. Her daughter was born with downs syndrome and a heart defect but the defect wasn't so severe that she needed surgery right away.

DH and i discussed this at length and we both agree on what we would do. i am extremely pro choice and he is extremely pro life, but somehow we were able to come to a consensus on what would work for US. i'll leave it at that.

down syndrome is in his family. we see it each and every day. it helped us make our decision.

I really don't think you are going to get any "I would choose to abort" answers to be honest. People may think that, but I don't think they would post it.

I opted not to get testing during pregnancy since it wouldn't have made a difference to me if the child had down syndrome (or anything else).

I agree with Summer.

We did get the testing done, but we didn't have a choice, nothing was really "optional" with my OB.

I agree

if you found out that your unborn DC was going to be born with Down Syndrome, CP, etc. would you abort or go full term?

I am sure most of you know what my answer would be and how I feel about this issue. Again, if my mom had the "tests" that we have today when she was preganat with me, maybe she would have aborted me b/c I was "not perfect" and had a "heart defect". I am sure some doctor would have scared the $hit out of her and my dad. Plus, my family would have given her all the reasons why having a child with a "disability" would be expensive and inconvenient. Well, it turned out that my defect was not as "bad" as some other children who have L-TGA and I was able to live a pretty normal life. I guess my thoughts on this issue are not PC, but you asked for honest opinions...

To answer your question directly...
I would go full term, have the baby and love the baby just as much as I would a baby without downs. IMHO that baby is still a human being, with so much to offer and teach the world. Besides, I would be thinking, what if the doctors and tests are wrong and I got a false positive for downs? I know two people that happened to.

I dont think there is a right or wrong answer to this question. I think parents needs to make the best decision that works for them and their family. Everyone has different abilities and limitations to what they can and cannot handle.

So as not to mislead anyone, there are no false positives in genetic testing. You would have to change the DNA. The marker tests have a high rate of false positives. Amnio & CVS tests are conclusive.

Re: I know this might be a diffcult question to answer but...

My good friend is going through this right now.Chat Icon She had amnio and it confirmed he has Downs. They decided the day she was pregnant that they would love their baby regardless. She is due end of July and this whole pregnancy has been an emotional rollercoaster for her. It truly breaks my heart to see her like this but her and her husband are amazing people and great parents to their 2 boys they have already and will get through this together and. It just breaks my heart knowing he will need major open heart surgery and all of the complications he will face in the future, but the benefits of having this beautiful child WILL outweigh all the downfalls they may come upon.

As far as myself, I personally would not be able to terminate. I have worked with children with Downs when I was younger and they are the most affectionate caring children I ever met - they have hearts and feelings just like any other child. I think they are EXTRA special and I can't wait to meet and kiss my friend's son.Chat Icon

ETA: I would never ever judge another person's decision. That is soooooo personal!

It was the marker tests. Sorry if I mislead anyone.

Re: I know this might be a diffcult question to answer but...

I would go full term, even if I knew that the baby would die before or after birth I would go full term! As a mother of a SIDS baby I know NOTHING could be worse than losing a child. If there were a test that could have been done telling me that my son would have died I would have still had him. I have a strong faith in God and if he feels that I am special enough or strong enough to have a child with a disability then I will accept what was givin to us. Of course we all want perfect helathy children but its just not life for that to be possible for everyone. I know there was a reason why God gave my son to my husband and I and if we were to have a child with something wrong then I know that there is a reason for that.

That being said I would never judge someone for making a different choice than me. IMO only God has the right to judge. I think we all must do what is right for us and our families without the added pressure of what others may think.
