For those that like her, I'm curious to hear why!
Please - no arguments - I really would like a nice discussion....
. I will say that I really respect that she has not changed her beliefs in order to advance her career. She seems smart, she has to know that a lot of her beliefs aren't going to play well to women nationwide. I find that admirable since it seems to be that many times politicians back-peddle their stance on things to appeal to whichever group they are speaking to at that moment.
ITA.
Also, she has chuzhpah, is a working mom, CHOSE to give birth to a child w/ special needs and I feel that she is not an elitist snob.
She balanced a budget, ebayed the Governor's jet, gave money back to the people and stood up to her own party on a bunch of different topics and fought corruption in her state.
BUT most of all, I agree with her on social issues and that fact the she is a woman in politics that does not come across to most people or to myself as a total B!tch who only cares about her own ambitions; or allows judges to legislate from the bench based on their own PERSONAL views and NOT what the people of her state have voted on (Ahem...Pelosi).

I really am disappointed.
I wanted to like her.
I love she is a mom. I love she has a baby. I even love she is the mom of a special needs baby. I love how feisty and strong she is.
But I can't look past some things. FACTUAL things - not the media stuff. I even liked that she has a pregnant teen daughter. Thats real to me.....
I wanted to love her. I don't consider myself strictly a democrat. I was willing to vote for someone I agreed with.
I know she isn't running for pres, but with how old McCain is, its possible if they are elected she could be pres....
Just venting....
So funny that you write this bc this is how I feel about Obama. I love him as a person. I CHEER when I hear him speak. I think that IF he does win, he will bring improvements to this country. But, I just don't agree with some of his basic views so I don't think that I can vote for him - but I will reserve judgement until after the debates.

You are COMPLETELY entitled to your opinion.
I think it's interesting because I found the snarky comments about community organizers (by Palin, Guiliani and Pataki) completely elitist and snobby.
Palin - I was mayor of a small town - which is like being a community organizer except I have real responsibilty.
I was unbelievably offended by that statement.

But in the end, I just don't believe in what she believes. Regardless she is a woman or not.
I was excited for a woman to be nominated until I did my research on her.
Oh well!!!!!! Maybe next term?

I was unbelievably offended by that statement. I agree that it was a little tasteless. but I think she had to address the whole - small town mayor = not a real job. everyone was attacking her on that and making it seem like just b/c it was a small town, it was a joke of a job.

I agree.
As for her giving money back to the AK people, I found this letter from one of her constituents interesting: http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/kilkenny.asp
Of course there are 2 sides to every story. I'd need to research it more to see how true the letter writer's statistics are. NOTE: Snopes verified the letter was written by who it says it was...they don't say they verified the letter's contents.

Born and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania for ten years prior to moving to Delaware, Biden trained as a lawyer and became a senator in 1973 at the Constitutional minimum age of 30, making him the fifth-youngest senator in U.S. history. He has served as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, dealing with issues related to drug policy, crime prevention, and civil liberties. He is a long-time member and current chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee and has worked on resolutions concerning the Yugoslav wars and Iraq War.
Biden unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 and 2008. In his sixth consecutive term in the Senate, Biden has served for the sixth-longest period among current senators.

There are always two sides and because some woman that lived in her small town took the time to write out how she differed and her "view" of Palin is not going to personally change my mind. I have some differences with her as well but I do like her. I do like some of the FACTS I have researched about her and heard her discuss. I do think in my mind she does represent woman very well, especially those that are conservative and republican, of which there are MANY in the U.S.....(I am sure I am going to get beat up on that, LOL!! but again I welcome differing opinions!) I guess what I find frustrating is that I am fairly conifdent you could find PLENTY of people that rip apart some of what Obama has done in the past....they ALL have issues , it's just in my opnion who you end up voting for is the candidate who is closest to your own PERSONAL views...but if you look at each candidate, Obama, Biden, McCain and Palin I guarantee you could find skeletons, problems, people that rip them to shreds from the past and all sorts of scandalous material....its unfortunate but it is life.

I was discussing this with my mom today.
I want SO much to have a woman, a MOM even, in office. I watched her speech and have to admit that when she said that children with special needs would have a friend in the white house, I was so excited at the possibility of it. I've been a special ed teacher for 8 years and know very well that our governmnt does not do enough for our children with special needs, even our children without special needs, and I'd love more then anything to see that change.
However, aside from that one aspect, I don't aggree with much else that she stands for. I aggree with so much that Obama stands for, although I don't LOVE him either.
Ultimately I will vote for Obama, because he supports my beliefs very well.
I would really like to hear what Palin has "planned" to help support special needs kids. It is one thing to just say it, but I'd love to hear her ideas. Obviously the current administration has done a lot to work against them with NCLB.

she has NOTHING planned for special needs. How could she?
She just CUT like I said in my post more then HALF of her States budget and programs for special needs. She has $$$, she doesnt need these programs and apparently doesnt care, but is gonna "use" her son now as a platform? What about what she did to all those poor children in AK who NEEDED the help? How was she a"friend" to them?

My dad was stationed at Dover AFB so we lived in Delaware for 4 years in the 80's. I can't speak to how they feel now, but back then he was like a god. Similar to Ted Kennedy and Massachusetts. I'm assuming that since he's still in office they still feel the same way.
But I've not looked into what he's done at all.

I only skimmed that article Dawn linked to earlier, didn't really have time to read it properly, but I thought it said that she had moved money around to help more special needs kids in the rural areas of AK and that the education community was happy with what she'd done.

Re: I know we have outdid our posts on Palin, but I have a confession...
I thought Palin seems likeable on the surface:
- she's a mother of 5 - she's attractive - she's smart - comes from a middle class background
So she must support women's rights and the plight of the middle class, right?
But as you research more and listen more you realize her values belies her background..
She: - opposes abortion - is pro-gun - supported drilling in the Artic Wildlife Refuge - supported the Bridge to Nowhere - opposes same-sex marriage
I too would love to hear why others want to vote for this woman.

i am not saying these are my beliefs but i don't understand why it is so hard for some people on these boards to believe that there could be another person that also believes in the same views as Palin, there are conservative people out there even in New York City,

I guess there are, and we have to deal with it, and I respect others views, I swear I do it's just hard for me, as I suppose vice versa.

I'm sorry - but seriously? You don't have to agree with Biden's views - you don't have to support him or even like him - but to say "what has this guy done?" when BOTH PARTIES agree that he is the senator with the MOST foreign policy expertise and experience is
Look up the bills he wrote - Violence against women act, the Crime Bill. He chaired the hearings for the Bork and Thomas SC nominations.
Again - you dont have to like him - but he's one of the most experienced peopel in the Senate.

Re: I know we have outdid our posts on Palin, but I have a confession...
Mc Cains age doesnt bother me one bit, Reagan was just a year younger than him when he was president and in this day and age people are living longer.
edited to say I like Palin. yes she is pro choice but so is every other republican and the laws have not and will not change will never pass in congress
pro gun- as much as I hate guns, I wonder just how many deaths and robberies there would be knowing that in every home there IS a gun and we are allowed to protect ourselves and robbers would have NO rights then! ( entering your home to rob you, you shoot them - they can SUE you!) I did read somewhere how the south like Texas crime was down and they believe its b/c of the freedom to bear arms.
same sex marriages- ah, Bush is against that too and many states have begun to do it, so why should that matter, it will just be a slow process ( llike everything else)
I like that she is a REAL person, can help the US get on our own feet with oil. so she cut special needs in 07 before her son was born. Ok maybe at that time funding needed to come off of somewhere and that was her choice. Now being in the shoes of so many that she took away- opened her eyes and is making her a better person for it to support it. doesnt matter what made her change her mind , what does matter is that she did.
She also doesnt have a big reputation and stand by what they feel is right and thats it, most politicians DO care and can be swayed. she is not your typical 50-60-70 year olds that care about their reputation. She can debate well, she has a status record, its not the amount of legislation you have done its the quality. she has gotten things done in Alaska that you can compare to many politicians. alaska is one of the hardest states to run, its big oil, a ton of legal stuff, it has a high unemployment rate, its not an easy place to govern and who is doing it SHE is! with success!
oh and a biggie her FISCAL responsiblity is handled very well!!!
