I m a little upset...(long)
Emily goes to school from 12:30 - 3pm.
I got a call as soon as I got home from dropping her off saying that she had an accident, and could I come up to change her.
She had a #2 accident. She has them from time to time. So I changed her and cleaned her up, and she went back to class.
Then at 2 o'clock I got another call, saying that she had another accident and needed to be changed again.
Now I'm all worried because 2 accidents in one day isn't so good, and the first one was loose and my stomach was upset last night so I was worrying if she had a stomach ache. I said that I'd pick her up and bring her home.
I got there and they sent her out. The teacher was on the rug with the kids so I didn't get to talk to her, but saw right away that the front of Emmy's pants were wet --- as if she had a pee accident.
So as we were walking home she asked why we were going home, and I told her because she had another accident. She said that the other kids weren't leaving yet though, and explained to her that since she had 2 accidents in one day she needed to come home.
She then told me that she was sorry that she spilled her water on her pants at snack time.
So I got home and checked her, and that's all it was. Water. Her pants were wet but her undies were dry. She just spilled her water during snack.
I'm upset now. I feel bad that I took her home for a dixie cup of spilled water! I also feel like between her teacher and the full time aide in the classroom, one of them should have sat and talked to her to find out what happened, so tht they'd have realized that she didn't pee in her pants, just spilled some of her water.
I don't want to be "that" parent. I was a teacher for 8 years and teacher parents are the worst, but I've always asked my students what happened when they've had accidents. I feel like if they'd have at least asked her, they'd have realized it was no big deal.
I called and left a message for the teacher, and if she doesn't call me back I'll write a note for Monday, but am I overreacting or am I justified?
Thanks, Melissa

I don't think you are overreacting at all. All they SIMPLY had to do was ask her

Sounds like your doing the right thing. Your not exploding on the teachers, just letting them know what really happened. I would do the same, so maybe next time they will address the situation and find out the cause of the pants being wet than just assuming what it was.

I'm not a mom yet, but my heart broke when she said she was sorry for spilling her water. The poor thing, she did nothing wrong!
I would be upset as well, but would definitely let them know that they should have taken the time to ask her what happened.

You are justified. Poor Emily I would feel that I needed to expain to her too that the teacher didn't find out the correct information from her and that it was not her fault at all. The poor little thing - you dont want her thinking that anytime she spills water at school that they will send her home. I would ask her teacher to explain that to her too.

First off- you are not doing anything wrong..
second-- You should definately say something just so they know if this was to happen again..

Re: I m a little upset...(long)
I just feel so bad because she felt like she had done something wrong. Leaving school was like a punishment for her. She hadn't even gotten to paint yet and LOVES being there with her friends. She really though that she did something wrong in spilling her water, when spilling water is not wrong at all.
I tried to explain to her tht it's like the boy who cried wolf, that since she had an accident earlier in the day the teacher probably just thought that she had an accident again, and that she needs to speak up and tell them she spilled her water.
But I also know that she is very obedient at school, and goes with what her teachers ask of her. I just feel like they could have questioned her better....it sounds like they didn't even question her at all.
So how do I approach it with the teacher if and when I get a phone call back, or on Monday?

Why do you have to come up and change her? I am confused as to why they cant change her and be done. To me it sounds like a circus scene.

I would just ask straight out " did you ask my dd how her pants got wet or just assumed she had an accident?"

alot of places dont want to take the responsibilty of changing the children. With all the germs and contaminations and fear of being charged for sexual assault.

Yes --- they do not change the kids. As a former teacher I understand this, and preschool kids usually aren't old enough to clean/change themselves, as it is done when they are older.
It isn't a preschool in a daycare or something like tht. I think that daycare preschools are different because they do change diapers within the facility as well.
She goes to schoo through our district.

Honestly... kids dont always speak up and say what happend. She may not have told the teacher what happened and may not have been responsive when asked. Id check with the teacher to make sure they asked her!!

Re: I m a little upset...(long)
Our preschool is strictly that not a daycare and they do change diapers. Others I looked into did also.
But she can clearly express her self and communicate. All they had to do was ask her. I hope she wasn't trying to tell them and they ignored her
I would def say something. Poor thing

Re: I m a little upset...(long)
I'd just present it as you said here. You can understand why they assumed she had another accident today, but Emily was really upset and thought she was being punished for spilling her water at snack time. She's the type of kid to not question authority, so maybe next time they can talk to her about it to try to get the full story out of her.

Our pre-school school doesn't either. I think it's some sort of legal thing, they have to have a daycare license to be allowed to change them.

OOOOOOHHHH...Gotcha! I thought she was in daycare like my dd. Eh' sounds like a bad day that will pass. Honestly, its not that bad. Its frustrating. I would just touch lightly upon it and move on when they call you back. No need to start the school yr off with a BANG. Tommorrow will be better.

You are totally justified. The last thing you want is Emily thinking she did something wrong and I agree with you, that they should have asked what happened.

Re: I m a little upset...(long)
I would approach it gently as far as asking how it happened. They didn't ask you to come and take her home, did they? They just informed you she had an accident? Is it possible they could have meant accident as in she spilled? They're main purpose was for you to come give her a fresh set of clothing, right? I would ask innocently, "you know Emily was wet from spilling her water yesterday - did you know that?" This way at least they're aware and don't assume next time (if they did this time).

Totally not reacting at all I mean, how could the teacher or the aide not realize she spilled her water? They definitely should have asked her or at least did some investigation as to what was the cause.

Yep! Julia's school won't change them either, Julia is fully potty trained, but the teachers aren't allowed to even help them pull up there pants after they go to the bathroom, thats why they tell us to make sure they wear comfy play clothes to school.
