I need advice from the Jewish girls on here.
My dear boss's MIL passed away on Sunday. He had expressed to me that although he would appreciate the companies kind thoughts, to please not send anything to his house (cards or flowers) I am guessing that just not what the Jewish do? When he came back in the office, we all said we are very sorry for his loss.
One of my co-workers who has been here for 13 years spoke with him about it and he does not want anything..
What do you ladies think?

If you want to send something, food would be the best - maybe a fruit basket.

I would honor his wishes.
Flowers are usually a no no but usually if they are sitting shiva, I would send food.
But, still..honor his family's wishes.

Re: I need advice from the Jewish girls on here.
It is not a Jewish custom to send flowers when someone dies. However, it is very customary to send food and cards. It could be that they are kosher and were concerned about non-kosher food being sent, or that the family is sitting shiva at another house and there will be no one home to receive anything.
If anyone is paying a shiva call, it is customary to bring something (cookies, nuts, etc), but I would make sure that it is Kosher. Otherwise, I would honor his wishes and not send anything.

I would respect his wishes. As much as you want to help, the nicest thing you can do is to respect what he wants. Let him and his family deal with it in their own way.

They are sitting Shiva on Monday. I guess it would be best to honor his wishes.. I just feel so bad. I have never seen him this down before.

As a company I would send a donation to the cause of her death (American Cancer Society, Alzheimer Foundation, American Heart Association, Diabetes Foundation, etc...) ...

If they are sitting shiva on Monday, I would have a food platter sent to the shiva house. Or you can always send a gift certificate to a local food place like a deli so they can buy food when they need it.

Re: I need advice from the Jewish girls on here.
sending flowers when someone dies is not a Jewish custom. since Jews sit shiva, most people send platters of food, cookies, cakes, etc. so that the people who are grieving don't have to cook - which I believe they are not allowed to do.
