I need some ideas to keep my kids interested......
I teach 8th grade (all subjects, its self contained) and now that the NYS exams are coming to an end, I need a way to keep them interested. I'm finding they're getting so bored even when I try to do something creative like various writing prompts etc..
What are some good ideas for end of the year projects for 8th grade that will keep them from falling asleep?

Last year I had my 8th graders (self contained as well) write biographies. They could pick any person they wanted as long as they could give me a good reason why they picked that person. It defintely took up alot of time between research, writing, etc. They seemed to enjoy it.

offering to host a "publishing party" where each student showcases their published and completed work to the rest of the class. the work is hung up and showcased around the classroom like in an art gallery with little tags with their names and all. you can offer some light refreshments (this is where their interest begins) and you can invite in any other teachers, AP's, etc. to come to your party also. hope this helps!

How about planning a trip? Research, map, write an itinerary...
Write & illustrate a children's book - donate to the elementary library?

PennyCat and Colleen, my Grandson is finishing up 8th grade this yr. Tell me what you know about 8th grade boys!!! Mary
PS Example, he does not want to attend the Awards Tea for Honor Roll. This is the second yr. he has not wanted to attend. I don't think he gave Donna a reason. He just said he'd get his award the next day. I thought maybe he thinks this is not a guy way to get an award? Does the word, "Tea" scare guys off?
