Re: I seriously do NOT know why
$25K AFTER tax is not bad at all just coming out of school.
I do feel for you BUT why would a company pay you the same amount of money vs someobody who has experience?
If I remember correctly, I "barely" used my college knowledge (except accounting!) to my 1st jobs. The case studies, etc... were nothing like the real World and I had to "learn" again when I entered the workforce.
Yes, it's not fun at the beginning and you may have to take a step backward to go forward later.
I did a one year internship making nothing. It opened so many doors later on. It at least showed some experience on my resume.

You said healthcare experience. Go here Stony Brook Always looking for tons of people.
I completely agree with this! I work there now and I love it! Well, most of the time that is!
Def. look and apply - it never hurts to apply and there are a few of us online here that work there that may be able to help out by spreading your resume around.
There are a lot of jobs at SB, but most of the entry-level ones are in the low 30s. Good luck with your search!

The sad/true thing is that we receive literally hundreds of resumes from college grads (many with grad degrees) for the entry-level jobs making $30,000. There is such a demand for jobs on Long Island that companies don't need to pay more. And it's not just taxes..Once you take out health insurance, retirement, possible union dues, etc. it's way less.

"recent college graduate" automatically means that you don't deserve to earn more than $25k a year after taxes.
I earned less than that before taxes ( in Manhattan)! Ok, admitedly, that was 9 year ago, but it was still low for the time.
Good luck though! ( Just don't go into publishing. . . )

It seems like the Starting salaries are going down and cost of living is going up.

I started at that salary before taxes and benefits (more $$ out of your paycheck) 8 years ago in the media industry. I would have loved to make $25k after taxes!
I have a staff and hire a lot of people out of college, and our starting salaries don't get higher than $30k-$32k pre-tax.
Good luck, though! Have you taken a look at the salary range for the field you want to be in? You may get a better idea of ranges if you do.

Re: I seriously do NOT know why
I lived on less then that my first year out of school- and I lived in Manhattan
it's not about the starting salary- it's about growth and advancement
with in 2 years I was making $15K more
and with in 3 years- I was almost making double
5 years latter- more then double where I started from
and I am not done yet

I agree.... I know it is tough. Nobody would believe me if I say my starting salary. It was so low! I will FM you! After 1 year my salary increased by $10K! And now I am over double that first salary. That is only in 4.5 years.
DH too. DH's salary is probably tripled now.
Both DH and I worked 2nd jobs while we saved for a house and wedding. I waitressed 3 nights a week (W, Sat, Sun) and pretty much made the same as my FT job (after taxes).

I had a similar experience. I started at less than $25k, in Manhattan BEFORE taxes, and in less than 8 years, I was making more than triple that. I know it s*cks starting out, but it really is about growth and opportunities for the first couple of years. It'll pay off, you'll see.
Good luck!

Really? You're field seems so specialized, I'm surprised it was so low. ( sorry for the hijack)

I totally agree! When I look back now at when I was just out of school I have no idea how I lived on my own in a 1BR apartment and paid all the bills. It was tough, but I've had awesome job opportunities that have provided me with a lot of growth and good experience. Less than 6 years later I am a "seasoned" manager making well over double what I started at and still have so much potential to really maximize my income and role in an organization. If I had not taken that crappy paying 1st job, I would definitely not be in the position I am now - I learned so much.
Hang in there, it will be totally worth it down the road!
ETA: I should also add that I also graduated with a Comm degree and my take home was probably about $25k to start.

Thanks for the advice ladies - I'm trying my best, but most of you know Rich's lousy situation - he's an elem ed teacher without a permanent job. He keeps bouncing from leave replacement to leave replacement, and unfortunately, that comes with very little pay (under $90 a day) and NO HEALTH BENEFITS.

I was thinking the same thing about salary AND publishing. I started with $22K back in 2000 when I worked for Penguin Entry level publishing should have been left for the trust fund babies.
