my very first job was working in a supermarket. i worked there for two years in highschool... this was back when there were people who would bag your groceries for you, we had a VERY STRICT dress code and a lot of rules.
the ONLY time i ever heard anything about open shoes was for the employees, because a can can fall on your foot and break a toe.
there is NOTHING unsanitary about wearing open shoes to the supermarket. it is more unsanitary to sneeze on your shopping cart.
don't people know that the HAND has more germs than the foot?!

I live in flops, and I don't use my toes to select my produce!!!!
Some people are just crotchety old messes who feel it is their obligation to say exactly what's on their minds even if it is totally unwarranted......screw her.....
