George Carlin
Good one- you know i studied his 1st Amendment case in law school.
that was the 7 dirty words right?
AHHHHH I remember studying that in college too. I remember thinking well this is the only time I will ever write words like this on a test!

Re: Icons
Honestly, I am hard pressed to think of too many who I consider "true" larger-than-life icons.
Oprah Madonna Lance Armstrong Michael Jordan
Kind of sad that they are mainly entertainers/athletes. Pre-Monica, I would have said Bill Clinton but I think he will always be tainted, at least in the eyes of history.

Re: Icons
Whose to say our past icons aren't tainted?
Charles Lindbergh/ Henry Ford- BIG NAZIS
Babe Ruth: A big mess- drunk, drugs, lots of problems
Thomas Jefferson- Slave owner who fathered illegitimate children with his slaves

True, but for whatever reason those aren't well known (at least I didn't know that about Babe Ruth and Henry Ford), just like with JKF- the press knew about his womanizing but kept it under wraps. But now it's all about sensationalizing things like that.
Or people choose to conveniently forget. I think modern-day icons will not be as forgiven, but maybe I am wrong.

i think it won't be as forgotton- you're right. Those icons didn't exist in the world of TV. Yellow Journalism in those days was exposing hazzards in meat industries, et. al.= not who was sleeping with whom, etc...It was also a time when, for better or for worse, journalists respected politicians and celebrities and used discretion when writing about them.

Re: Icons
He's an entertainer but involved in humanitarian projects, etc. I vote for Bono.
Also George Carlin & Howard Stern would be good for 1st Amendments cases.

Re: Icons
I was also thinking of Bono
I can also see India Arie or Alicia Keys becoming one as they age and do more with their music and good causes.

Re: Icons
It depends where you look. I think we look to the TV/Movie/Music media too much for Icons, but they are there....also we are all still relatively young. We need to check back when we are 50...and see if lets say Madonna and Bono are still around, then they most definatly are icons. If we look at todays society of "famous people" we really have no way of knowing as Im sure those back in the days didnt realize the impact some people back then would have on us now.
I think Icons for me today are Oprah Winfrey, Bono, Madonna, Elton John, Paul Mccartney, Danielle Steel, Brad Pitt.
These people have cornered the market on what they do and also speak out to the public and are always in the public eye and everyone knows them and probably something they do...

Re: Icons
i guess when i think of *icons*, i think more of Revolutionaries than entertainers, so my answers arent really in line with everyone else's... but here's who came to my mind, anyway:
Dr. James Watson Dr. Francis Crick (though he passed away last year) Bill Gates Bob Dylan Mya Angelou Richard Nixon (in terms of Foreign relations- not watergate)
