Re: If a recipe calls for good olive oil...
I previously used olive oil that I purchased in Rome. Now that bottle is gone and I miss it terribly. Nothing here compares to that!
But, if a recipe calls for good olive oil- the first thing is to make sure you get extra virgin olive oil. extra virgin is a must.
The second thing is to go by taste. Something you would enjoy just dipping your bread into. For me that is NOT bertolli or filippio berio. Some of the brands that I find to have higher quality in taste are colavita and omaggio. Also specialty italian markets have some good ones as well as williams sonoma.

Same. I am going to be super honest and say that I can't generally taste too much of a difference when cooking. When doing SALAD or using uncooked oil for dipping I like this Spanish oil: Spanish Oil
I had a gift bottle of Italian Oil.. but it is long gone and I can't find another bottle.

It depends. If it's for saute or frying, I never use EVOO and will usually use what's on sale.

I once trekked down a mountain in Varenna, Italy sweating my butt off cradling a bottle of the most exquisite olive oil I ever tasted from a tiny village we came upon while hiking. Alas, that is long gone.
I do like Colavita as well.

Anything from Fairway. I like their Umbrian and Sicilian brands especially.

Re: If a recipe calls for good olive oil...
For everyday frying, I use Fillipo Berio. For salads and other recipes, I like Colavita or Carapelli although I'm open to try new brands as long as it's EVOO and a nice, dark green. Nothing compares to the olive oil in my home country (Greece) though....sooo delicious!
