If convertible seats start at 5lbs why do we bother w/ infant car seats? Can I switch now?
Is it just for the carrying aspect or safety? To be honest I never even realized until recently that my convertible says it starts at 5 lbs. I always stupidly assumed it started around the same time the infant seat "ended".
We have problems w/ ds in the car- he seems to hate the infant seat. B/c of this we never use the attachment for the stroller- we always just bring the full stroller and switch him out.
He will be 5 months in a week and about 16lbs and 25 1/2 inches. Would it be appropriate to switch to the convertible now for comfort? (Still rear facing obviously). We are taking a trip next month that is a few hours and I thought it might be better- but only if it is just as safe.
Thx ladies.

absolutely!
the only reason IMO for the infant seats is the convenience of having a "travel system" where you can go from car to stroller, etc.
Especially at 5 months... you can definitely switch!

I don't see why not if you think it would help. You are keeping it rear facing anyway so I don't see the problem. I would think you technically don't need an infant carrier if you always used the stroller.

The only reason I did the infant seat is that when she was younger she would stay asleep in it and it was easier to move that around then to transfer her...I think switching him is fine.

Even though many convertibles are RATED for 5lbs and up, many are ill fits for newborns.
If you want to go straight to a convertible, that is fine, but make sure that the lowest slots on the harness actually go low enough to fit a small infant or newborn. If you have a preemie or extremely small infant you're more likely to need the lower harness slots available in the buckets.
A couple examples that tend to fit newborns are the First Years True Fit, Graco MyRide and Sunshine Kids Radians but the Britax convertibles tend to not fit an infant until they're about 6 or so months because the lowest harness height is too tall for an infant.

Convenience!!!! Especially if you do a lot of errands or you have a Winter baby.
I also find that some convertible carseat keep the kids a bit more upright their head might fall forward a bit more.
But if I had another child, I am not sure I would get an infant carseat. I probably would just get a convertible carseat. Again depending on time of year baby was born.

I think at 5 months you could definitely switch. From what I have read infant seat is the preferable method for a newborn b/c although they can go into the convertible seat at 5 lbs they tend to be more upright so it is generally recommended that you start with the infant seat and move to the convertible so that their head doesn't lob forward as much.

We used the convertible seat as soon as DS could hold his head (about 2 months). He HATED the infant seat, and I hated to carry it!
