If I traveled a lot, I could see the convenience of the nook or kindle.

I love to hold a book, cuddle up with it in big comfy couch, flag pages of importance. And I simply love book stores.

I really don't know how much I'd like a nook without having ever seen/used one.

Can you borrow (download) books from the library and put them on your nook or kindle?

I love reading in my comfy couch too. I read my ereader there or in my bed.

I still go to book stores to look at books and get to touch them. Some books are just not for an ereader. Like a photography book. You could never replace that sort of books. I get ideas about books I want to read there.

People who love *books* truly love the book itself... I love reading and don't care about the book experience so much, plus I would NEVER write in a book, dog ear, etc. That's probably why the nook works for me - I never have to worry about it getting messed up at all.

This is me! I have complete OCD with real books. They must remain "perfect". My books look like new even after I read them. The nook is perfect for me.

I write in books I love.. underscore, turn pages in, highlight .. and even sometimes tuck flowers or love letters in the pages. And then I have another copy that remains pristine!! But only for books I absolutely adore.Chat Icon

I have a cover for my nook. It's leather. It feels great holding it. I do have pockets for flowers too. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I love holding my books, turning the pages, underlining, highlighting, dog-earing - I love book covers.

The experience of reading would be so different; it would feel so foreign. I get the convenience of a nook but I truly never want one. Call me crazy, old fashioned -- but I never want to be without book shelves.

same here. And I wouldn't be happy if someone bought me something I expressed I didn't want. The thought/gesture is always nice but I would respect someone's wishes.

my dad kept telling me he didnt want one.....home slice went out and bought himself an IPAD to read on. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon He was just being an e-reader snob & wanted that instead of the kindle & knew I couldnt afford the IPAD. Which on another note is REALLY annoying b/c I know he wont use the IPAD for anything BUT to read so I dont understand what the point is (I would KILL for an IPAD to work on!!!!)??? Chat Icon

I love books and love to read. I have no interest in a nook or a Kindle.

I look at a computer screen most of the day, I don't want to read for pleasure that way.

Also, I am comfortable with most technology, but don't want to be bothered downloading books, I can barely keep up with uploading photos from my camera. I am rarely on the computer at home.

Same here - I work on the computer ALL day. I am a huge technology person - I like to have all the newest gadgets and stuff, but I really just LOVE books - the smell, the feel of the pages.

I've always loved reading.

But as others have said, the prices are just too high. And while going to the library is nice, it just took the enjoyment out of it. Names on waiting list, them calling, having to go get it when they call me, etc.

The Nook has eliminated all of that and brought me back to reading. In the past 5 months I've probably read 50 books and paid for 1 so far.

That being said - if someone said they didnt want it, I wouldnt get it for them. Maybe get them a gift card to B&N and tell them that they can return for 14 days with no explanation. Maybe they'll give it a try on their own if they know they can return it before 14 days with no questions asked.

The thing I don't like is what if you are on a train, or on a long flight, and your battery runs out...well, no more reading for schmendrick who lost their charge...I like a good old fashioned paper book!!

I don't have one - but don't you have to buy books to read on it? It maybe that the person doesn't want to buy books (added expense or other reason) - and maybe gets many of theirs from the library?

I'm not sure - but some people like to relax in a tub with a book - I'm not sure you can really do that with that type of book. So those might be some reasons they don't want one.

Re: If someone who LOVES books and loves to read says they would never want the nook (or something like it)...

I am this person. I love to read, and told my mother REPEATEDLY that I did not want her to get me a kindle. She insisted. I said it would be a waste of money and I'd never use it. She bought it for me anyway Chat Icon

A little over a year later, these are my thoughts:
- kindle is good for long vacations because it is lighter and saves suitcase space, and if you run out of books you can buy more
- kindle is good for the beach because you dont have to worry about the wind blowing pages
- kindle is good for the gym because you need less of a ledge on the machines, and its easier than turning pages

That being said, I HATE HATE HATE paying for books and always borrow from the library or from friends, so the idea of having to buy books for this annoys me. I've tried reading the free books but they are free for a reason. I also hate that you can't flip to a chapter easily, and have no idea what page number you are on in the "real" hardcopy.

To be honest, I still think the Kindle is a waste of $$$ for someone like me, and just because you love to read doesnt mean you want or would enjoy a kindle.

If the person has expressed they definitely do not want one. I would not purchase it anyway.

I will say, I enjoy reading big time (when I have time) and I own a Nook. It is NOTHING like looking at a computer screen and reading.

I was that person at first. I love holding a book and having something tangible and I never wanted one....then I bought one "just to see" and I love it! I prefer it to regular books now.

With a Nook or Sony Reader you can download from your local library and it's free. I've read 50 something books and only paid for 1.

As for the tub, I know some folks who throw their nook/kindle into a ziplock bag and go into the tub. I haven't done it (and I probably wouldn't.) If you want to get more fancy than ziplock, they sell waterproof cases for them too. Chat Icon

Exactly my feelings.

I have used a Kindle and it was interesting and there are some compelling reasons to use it - but I still don't want one.

As to the iPod/CD comparison... it is not at all the same thing. Listening to music is auditory. I can listen on a record, a cd, an iPod, a radio.. as long as the sound is coming out and is clear I am happy.

Reading is an EXPERIENCE to me - more than just words on a page. It's tactile and emotional and as much as I'd appreciate the thought if someone gave me a Kindle, I'd feel like they really didn't know me very well.

ETA: My vote is not to buy it for the person. You can witness to them all day long and tell them WHY it's better and more convenient... but to buy it for them is kind of attempting to force their conversion. Reminds me of the religious salespersons post!

See--I feel that way about music. I'm connected to reading too, just as connected as I am to music. I don't think turning an actual page and lugging around a huge book have anything to do with connection but thats just me. As far as it being emotional, I think music is MORE emotional than reading. Theres nothing like a song I love to change how I'm feeling or what I'm thinking/focused on... I also rarely read a book more than once and I never write in them.

But again, thats just me. I love my kindle! My vote is that everyone should have one, but if the person really doesn't want one, why waste the money?

This was me 100000%...I was sooo anti e-reader I thought I would never ever try it. Until one day I folded and got the Nook. Now I am absolutely hooked! I think it is the best invention ever! I am a super fast reader and can finish whole books in a day and its great to have a whole queue of books waiting for me once I finish the one I am reading. Especially when taking trips and stuff like that. I was the type of person who would pack my suitcases with 4 or 5 books and now I don't have to lug all of the books around anymore.

ETA: I probably wouldn't buy one for someone if they specifically didn't want one because it is not for everyone. But I would recommend they tried it out in the store just to see what they think.

ITA. The only time I could imagine using it is on long trips--especially business trips. I am constantly running out of room for books especially on trips with long flights...other than that, I love turning the pages too!

Re: If someone who LOVES books and loves to read says they would never want the nook (or something like it)...

The Nook sounds perfect for my MIL - she's a crazy reader - today she gave me 14 paperbacks that she read recently. She doesn't have a library card and I can't seem to convince her to go to the library and get one or even tell me what she is looking for so I can get it for. It bothers the poop out of me for some reason - I'm all for libraries - why not, your tax dollars are paying for it. She spends hundreds of dollars on books she reads in 1 or 2 days and then she wants to get rid of them and I'm the only person she has around to give them to or DH. (She has no friends).

So I'm thinking the Nook would be a great gift for her for the holidays - then maybe I can get her to use the library.

I've told dh not to get me one. Maybe some day I'll want it, but right now I love owning the actual book, seeing the cover, closing that last page. I'm starting to get into some of the classics, and I want my future kids to have a little library.

Re: If someone who LOVES books and loves to read says they would never want the nook (or something like it)...

I'm one of those people who always said they never wanted a nook. I was an English major in college, and I devour books. I love the feel of them, the smell of them, the act of flipping pages.

However, after moving 2x in 2 weeks this summer, the amount of books I had was just unreasonable, and I looked at how much money I had spent on them.

I bought a nook, and I LOVE it

I say this all the time. I love to read, but part of what I love about reading is reading a book. It's just not the same as an electronic device. I understand why other people like them, but would never want one for myself.

Love it! I am reading about 1 library book every 10 days.
I don't worry about battery life b/c it lasts a long time and I have a USB charger and it also works on my BB minicharger so I can even charge it up on my car charger.
You have to want to try it and the best way is to go to the store and have them do a demo.

New nook was just released today it's pricey...Looks awesome though.

I travel alot for work and I have at least 3 library books on it.
