I don't have one - but don't you have to buy books to read on it? It maybe that the person doesn't want to buy books (added expense or other reason) - and maybe gets many of theirs from the library?

I'm not sure - but some people like to relax in a tub with a book - I'm not sure you can really do that with that type of book. So those might be some reasons they don't want one.

No, you don't need to buy books with the Nook. You can just download them from home from the library. It's super quick and free.

You need to keep buying books with the Kindle though.

And someone mentioned the free books are free for a reason. The library offers all the bestsellers. It's all the book you would spend $$$ on if we were to buy them.

It does not read like on a computer at all. Actually you do forget it's not a book.

I know I love my Nook. I am so glad DH bought it for me.

But that being said, I would not buy an ereader for someone who told me they did not want it.

Most people who do say that they don't like reading from a computer, have never read a ebook from an ereader and e-ink.

I feel this way. Looking at a computer screen for to long when I really need to concentrate gives me a headache. I would rather read a print out or a book when I read thus defeating the entire purpose of the kindle/nook. I like to finish a book quickly. If I need to do in depth reading that requires my utmost concentration then I need it printed out.

I love holding my books, turning the pages, underlining, highlighting, dog-earing - I love book covers.

The experience of reading would be so different; it would feel so foreign. I get the convenience of a nook but I truly never want one. Call me crazy, old fashioned -- but I never want to be without book shelves.

this.

also we like to display the books we've read. at least our fav ones and the ones we read over and over.

and i have pretty books. they're decorative.

Nooks, Kindles and other devices specifically made as eReaders aren't computer screens. They are eInk screens; no backlight, no reflection, no glare. Your eyes dont hurt using it. I've read 6-10 hours a day on it and havent gotten a headache.

ETA: An ereader is better than a paperbook as you can change font and font size to make it easier to read.

I don't want it. Don't get it and I wouldn't use one if someone gave it to me. The whole experience of reading, to me at least, involves the pages, the feel, the smell... I would never use it.

yep same for me. Im a HUGE book lover. I love going into a book store and looking at the different books etc. I have no desire for a book reader and would never use it eithere.

DH loves to read so I was going to purchase him one for his birthday but he said he would never use it. He prefers to hold a book. I kind of see where he is coming from because I also like to hold a book & of course have book shelves.

WOW thank you so much for all the responses! I loved reading everyone's experiences with the nook.

I was talking about my mom. She is a book freak, LOVES to read, loves books, loves b&n and going to the library... but she also travels a lot lately since we live in FL and she lives in NY. I felt it would be great for her flights and for when she comes down so she doesn't have to lug books with her.

We passed b&n the other day walking around and the sign for the new nook was there and she made a comment that she'd never want one of those. She loves her books. Before she said this I had the nook in mind as a christmas gift for her.

She's the type that needs time with technology... she never wanted a cell phone but when she finally got one she loved it. Now she texts, send picture messages and everything. Same with a laptop, ipod and HDtv...

But, I think books are different than all that in a way.

I decided that I won't get it for her. As much as I think once she had it she'd love it, I don't want her to open it and think I just ignored her when she said she didn't want one. Maybe a gift card to b&n would be better. Chat Icon

As to the iPod/CD comparison... it is not at all the same thing. Listening to music is auditory. I can listen on a record, a cd, an iPod, a radio.. as long as the sound is coming out and is clear I am happy.

Reading is an EXPERIENCE to me - more than just words on a page. It's tactile and emotional and as much as I'd appreciate the thought if someone gave me a Kindle, I'd feel like they really didn't know me very well.

See--I feel that way about music. I'm connected to reading too, just as connected as I am to music. I don't think turning an actual page and lugging around a huge book have anything to do with connection but thats just me. As far as it being emotional, I think music is MORE emotional than reading. Theres nothing like a song I love to change how I'm feeling or what I'm thinking/focused on... I also rarely read a book more than once and I never write in them.

But again, thats just me. I love my kindle! My vote is that everyone should have one, but if the person really doesn't want one, why waste the money?

Hrmm.. I think I didn't express myself appropriately. Music IS important and can be a really emotional experience - yes even MORE than reading. But the VEHICLE used to deliver the music doesn't tend to matter provided that it is able to relay the sound clearly, KWIM? If I am in my room listening to tunes - I don't rightly care if it's on my iPod, my stereo, my television or whatever.. provided that the music coming from it is clear and sounds good. The exception being old jazz records. I prefer those on a turntable.Chat Icon

With a book - PART of the experience for some people is the ability to write notes in the margin, to feel the pages. I don't mean that it's more EMOTIONAL than music.. just that for some folks (like me) the tactile portion is important.

But - there's no 'right' or 'wrong' answer - some people LOVE their eReaders and that's wonderful. Some people prefer old fashioned books - and that should be fine too. Buying someone a tool that they said they don't want is kind of like telling them that you don't respect their opinion.

I'm glad you opted against getting her one Jess! If you have one, you should lend her yours and let her get a feel for it! Maybe she'll be one of the converted!!

i haven't yet jumped to electronic readers. I am kinda worried about more eyestrain then what I currently have since I work on computers all the time. Also there is something amazing about how the book is package, how the pages feel, etc. I like going to old bookstores and getting old books on anything just because i love books. Now newer books i wouldn't mind reading on a reader just worried about my eye site.
