If walls could talk...

Neener's antique lamp post made me think of a cute idea.

Have you found any "treasures" in your house? Worth anything or not... anything interesting?

We're in our house a year now and it was built in 1958. Haven't found that sack of gold coins yet!

So far found an old RC Cola can, the kind you open with the triangle can opener like a can of pineapple juice. DH wanted to throw it away but I saw it go on Ebay for $50-$70. He's good with keeping it now!

A cool clear bottle when we dug up for the new driveway. I put flowers in it on my window sill.

Some old newspaper wadded in the walls as insulation with $ .49 nylon stocking ads. Two torn halves of baseball cards (different players), a bowling trophy engraved plate.

Our most recent find was in a wall we repaired... a little U-Haul trailer box, some chenile chicks and a plastic clown cake decoration.

Re: If walls could talk...

Cool finds! The only thing we found was a copy of a check from the original owners to their insurance company for homeowners insurance. The date is 1958. It was jammed behind the dishwasher/counter when DH installed a new dishwasher.

Other than that lamp....I'm suprised our walls didn't talk!! I took off some molding and found 4 layers of BRIGHT wallpaper in our dining room.

Also, in the master bedroom, they had at one time chosen the color neon green to paint the entire room. I'm talking the color of the Chat Icon 's bonnet green.Chat Icon

Oh and I did find a Mercury Dime when I took out some closet shelves. Ever since my dad died, we all find dimes, just dimes, in odd places or when we need him!

We found the previous owner's mother's passport. It was about 40 years old! We mailed it back to him for the memories.

Re: If walls could talk...

we found lots of dirt, but besides that, we found this under the stairs where the old oil burner was.

And when we were cleaning out the house before we moved in we found a needle and a crack pipe. And my mom found the crack pipe and my MIL found the needle. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Then this is all the disgusting things we found under the kitchen cabinets in the apt in our house. The previous owners were just pigs. No nice way of putting it.

We also found drawings in closets that the kids did and phone numbers where writen all over the place - closets, kitchen cabinets, walls. Chat Icon Chat Icon

And lots and lots of kids toys in the yard, I mean everywhere in the yard. Underground even. Every time we dig we find something else. Chat Icon

Our house was built in 1920, and we are only the 3rd family to live here. The original owners gave the place to their daughter after they died, and she lived into her 90's. Her name was Ethel King. I have not found anything from her here, my next door neighbor gave me pictures of her and her parents standing in front of our house in the 1920's .. it is so weird!

OMG Jen!!! That's just disgusting!!!! But hey... you could always use a good ping pong ball!!! You really made a transformation! That's why everytime we do a renovation, I want to redo all the walls... not to find that sack of gold coins but to get rid of someone else's yucky!!!! Chat Icon

During the renovations on my current home (first day) I went by to check on the progress of the "gutting".

My contractor found a copy of Playgirl Magazine and Oui Magazine both from the 70's.

Let's just say these publications were before the popularization of plastic surgery and waxingChat Icon

We all had a good laugh about it.

Re: If walls could talk...

My sister was gutting her house and when they removed one of the walls they found an old..really old sewing machine. Inside the machine was a pay stub for the woman who owned it. I think it was a few dollars. She couldn't find a date on anything to say when the machine was from and she never found out if it was worth anything. I'm not sure if she still has it now.
My sister thought it was extremely odd how they just put this huge machine inside the walls and covered it up. Not sure why anyone would do that.. but she was pretty freaked out.

when we gutted our house all we found was a bunch of headaches and some pretty bad tile that I had to scrape off..ugh..;)
nothing interesting at all...

Re: If walls could talk...

I have lived in my house for thirty years and have done renovations and never found a thing. However, whenever we renovate a room down to the studs - my husband and I right something on the studs - like the date - our names and what is going on in our lives. So it gives the house a little history and whoever owns it after us might get a kick out of reading it someday.

When we replaced our basement drop ceiling tiles we found:

one empty bud light case box
one box of scalloped potatoes
hundreds of sunflower seeds
several condom packs
one used condom (yuck)
5 roaches (not the insects)
several pot baggies

The sellers high school aged son lived in the basement and apparently used the ceiling tiles as his personal hiding spot.

Don't ask me why he stashed the used condom up there.. that was absolutely disgusting!!!

Re: If walls could talk...

The houses in my development where built in 2000. My neighbor took his stairs apart to tighten them (as the houses are built like crap) he found tons of garbage under the stairs. He was not happy so I can assume the same for mine.
