I have lived in my house for thirty years and have done renovations and never found a thing. However, whenever we renovate a room down to the studs - my husband and I right something on the studs - like the date - our names and what is going on in our lives. So it gives the house a little history and whoever owns it after us might get a kick out of reading it someday.

I love this idea. I'm going to do this before we close all our walls up in the Family Room.Chat Icon

LOL. We gutted our house so the things we found were interesting.......some odd.....Chat Icon

Cigarette butts
Different colored pills/capsules Chat Icon
Tiny little army figurines that DH kept
A VERY Old Christmas ornament w/ a bell inside it
A very old list of Christmas items that one of the kids wanted for Christmas (lol)

In the original attic was old animal poop...dont know if it was cat or dog or other...it was so old and who knows how many owners ago?

What we did find interesting was a bunch of architect books. One of the original owners apparantly was an architect and had a whole bunch of drawings of homes in the developments not too far from us that he built. We kept those.

When we bought the house, the woman told us she used to hide jewelry in random spots and she doesn't think she got everything. I'm hoping we come across some high price items!Chat Icon

Actually, our entire attic was insulated with old newspapers in perfect condition from the 40s and 50s. They were so cool to look through when we found themChat Icon

Re: If walls could talk...

We did find some pics of some owners building the fireplace in the basement.
Those people put two coins in the grout between the stones to show the year it was built.
There's also part of a railroad track to help hold the logs in place.

When we tore down some panels in the 2nd garage, it was stuffed with packing peanuts that flew out everywhere.

There was also lots of writing inside a hole inside of a closet.

When we replaced our basement drop ceiling tiles we found:

one empty bud light case box
one box of scalloped potatoes
hundreds of sunflower seeds
several condom packs
one used condom (yuck)
5 roaches (not the insects)
several pot baggies

The sellers high school aged son lived in the basement and apparently used the ceiling tiles as his personal hiding spot.

Don't ask me why he stashed the used condom up there.. that was absolutely disgusting!!!

When we took down a wall in what used to be the old owners teen-aged sons bedroom we found a whole bunch of used condoms he had stashed in the wall. He had punched a hole int he wall and then stuck them in thereChat Icon Thank goodness we took the wall down. Ew if they were just in there I would die!!!!Chat Icon

Re: If walls could talk...

Not in my house now, but in the house I grew up in, built in the 1920s, we always used to find jacks and those tiny balls that you play jacks with, in the yard. I guess that was the popular thing to play back then Chat Icon

I was hoping to find some cool stuff in my house but the prior owners completely gutted it before we moved in so I haven't found anything....and I love that stuff! Chat Icon

Our house was built in 1900. We found magazines from the 1940s in our attic. They were either Polish or Russian but pretty cool to look through.

My DH found a lot of junk when digging in our yard. We have a collection of glass bottles that he found on display in our kitchen - there is a whiskey bottle with the cork still in it, a milk bottle, cream bottle and a pill bottle. He also found an old metal cat that was all corroded but that found it's way into the garbageChat Icon

Re: If walls could talk...

Our house is almost 100 years old and when we had to open up our bathroom wall to insulate it we discovered all lined up on a beam- about 6-8 beer cans of this very old fashioned beer. I forget the name of it but my dad knew what it was. IT was funny that they were all in a straight line sitting on the beam!

Re: If walls could talk...

When we took down a wall in my childhood house, we found a child's drawings on the sheetrock. We got Newsday from that day and put it in the wall before we closed it up.

We haven't found anything yet, but we didn't take anything down yet either. There is a glass jug in the basement bathroom extension but I'm not crawling in there to check it out.
