If you are a vegetarian...

What made you give up meat? How long?
Was it a slow progression? Do you eat 'certain' meats? (Say pepperoni on pizza or split pea soup with ham pieces...) I guess I'm trying to ask to what extent are you a non-meat-eater?

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

I was a vegetarian for a long time - almost 10 years UNTIL I met my DH - what turned me off was a bad hamburger one day and that was it! I eat meat once in a while and even when I do, I dissect it to make sure I'm not eating anything GROSS! Poultry is disgusting to me and I HAVE to be in the mood for it - I don't eat ground beef - but will have ground turkey once in a while and I DO NOT eat lamb or veal - those poor baby animals!

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

I was a vegetarian for 2 years. Then one day my mom had a BBQ and I ate steak! It was good, and now that I don Atkins I can't see myself w/ out meat.

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

I stopped eating meat 15 years ago but then started eating it again after about 2 years.

I stopped eating all meat - fish included (for those who don't think it's meat Chat Icon - 6 years ago...there was a "lobster incident" that put me over the edge again.

Both times were for ethical reasons.

I started eating some fish (mostly white fish and some shellfish - shrimp, calimari, clams) the year I got married. It was a personal decision.

The only time I have eaten other meat was when it was given to me in error (and it was only a bite - I didn't ingest it). Like the Boca burger that was really beef...or when DH's grandmother insisted the pasta salad had tuna in it and it was chicken.

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

I was a vegetarian for 2 years after I went to Mexico. I was working in a orphanage - and they don't waste a scrap of food there.

They would roast a pig and we had to take it apart & pot every piece in a huge pot. It was the big vein or artery that did it for me. I couldn't eat meat at all - or look at it while someone else ate it.

Eventually I started eating chicken cutlets and worked my way to well done hamburger. Finally I was able to eat chicken on the bone and then steak. I can eat it now but it needs to be well done.

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

I've been a vegetarian for over fifteen years. I stopped eating meat bc I love animals and the thought of eating them seriously nauseates me. I don't miss it at all. I don't wear leather either. Why kill animals if you don't have to? That's my motto. Also, to reiterate what a previous poster mentioned, in order to be a real vegetarian, you don't eat any animals, including fish.

I'm curious to know why you write this!

Seriously...Since you wrote it, I'm asking. (No offense intended.)

Is it for health reasons? Moral reasons?

Aren't there levels? Ranging from non-red-meat-eating to strict vegans (nothing that was once alive?) I could be wrong. I'm just trying to obtain info and learn.

Do you not eat any meat? I only ask for clarification because to me it seems like there is meat in everything.

Are those of you who are vegetarians careful to avoid even soups made from meat-stocks and things like that?

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

I was a vegetarian (except for fish) for about 7 years and then I began to eat only chicken and turkey. Now I prefer not to eat even that, but if it's all thats around I'll have it. I dont mind fish/seafood though. I just feel healthier when I dont eat meat, I noticed I had less headaches and fewer asthma attacks and at this point the thought of eating red meat really grosses me out.

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

I became a vegetarian over 16 yrs. ago. I was doing summer stock theatre in an outdoor theatre. We were doing 3 different shows one of which was "Fiddler on the Roof". I was playing Chava and since we used live animals in the shows they thought that in one scene they would have my character walking with a calf. In order for this to happen I had to earn the calf's trust by taking care and feeding him. Well, being 16 and an animal lover I decided to name him. He had a mark on his forehead that resembled a question mark so I named him Huh. After a summer of caring for Huh I never looked at a piece of beef the same way again. About 6 mths. after I gave up red meat I gave up all meat (including fish/seafood). I can't imagine going back to being a carnavoir.

There are different labels of vegetarians - there is even a "pesce vegetarian" (fish-eating veg) - lacto-ovo (dairy & egg eating veg), lacto (dairy, no egg veg), ovo (egg, no dairy veg), etc.

A "strict vegan" is stating the obvious twice - it's just "vegan". Vegan's do not eat any meat, dairy or eggs - they won't eat honey or jell-o either (I don't eat jell-o either).

Meat is not in everything - no matter how hard the USDA tries Chat Icon I won't deny it, it takes work. You have to read ingredients and ask the waiter/tress and/or preparer lots of questions. Not all soups are made with chicken broth - all the soups I make are a veg stock.

I had a friend was a vegan & the hardest thing for her to give up was Honey Comb cereal! Chat Icon

Meat is not in everything, but you have to look carfully for milk solids, chicken stock, gelatin & honey.

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

Vegans have it hard as well, can't eat anything with whey in it. Also if food was made in a factory with milk products, that is a definite no.

My youngest brother is a strict veg. which means he eats like a vegan, but does not live the lifestyle. He is dedicated to his sports, so he wears the team's leather sneakers...he does use an organic baseball glove though.

My other brother is a vegan.

If anyone wants to try it out, I know a great restaurantChat Icon

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

I have been a vegetarian for about 14 years or so, I can never remember exactly what age I started at.

Growing up, (with the exception of when I was too young to know what I was eating), I never ate chicken, veal, or fish. But I ate all beef and hotdogs. In high school, I stopped eating meat all together. I wanted to lose weight and me and a friend thought if we cut it out we would lose. And 14 years later I still don't eat any meat. I just never went back, and I don't see me ever going back.

I do eat all dairy. My only "meat products" I eat are chicken broth and beef gravy on mashed potatoes.

I don't mean to be rude but saying Vegans have it hard doesn't really make sense. It's a choice of lifestyle, they have made their own restrictions on the food they eat. I'm not trying to knock it (my wife has been a lacto-ovo vegetarian since birth) but it doesn't make sense when people that choose this lifestyle complain about what they can't eat.

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

I eat chicken, only because I was threatened by my doctor when I was 18. However, I don't eat it all that often and I haven't had red meat or pork since I was 10. I just hate the taste of it. Chicken is the most tasteless to me, which is why I picked that one to eat again. I just hate the smell and the texture of meat.

ETA: I also do not eat fish or any stocks other than vegetable stock and chicken broth (which I also don't really care for). If I knew I would be healthy without eating chicken, I wouldn't eat it. However, I really do not like tofu or soy and I am allergic to nuts, so my protein options are limited.

Chat Icon I don't think she was complaining about it...just stating that it is a hard lifestyle. There aren't many vegetarian restaurants out there, let alone vegan - that's a huge limitation...among other things, of course.

I disagree that people can't complain, though, regardless of whether it was a choice or not. Complaining/protesting brings about change. 15 years ago there was virtually no vegetarian frozen food section in the supermarket...now there are lots of choices (albeit, still slim in comparison).

I am not vegan, and I am not complaining. I see how many labels they search through and yes it is harder to be a vegan then a vegatarian.

Re: If you are a vegetarian...

I've been a vegetarian now for close to 2 years... I've never had a taste for meat, it always grossed me out. Then, one day we were watching tv and saw a program on Eddie Lama, an animal rights activist. It was very disturbing, and both DH and I agreed we would never eat meat again. And that was it - never again. He made an analogy that really hit home with me. He asked, would you ever dream of killing and eating your pet dog or cat? If not, then why is it ok to kill and eat a cow, or a pig? They all have the same emotions. A cow or a pig will have just the same fear and anxiety as a dog or a cat... they all have the same emotions and if the thought of killing your doggy tugs at your heart, the same should go for a poor innocent cow, pig, lamb or even chicken Chat Icon

Yes. We read the label for everything and at restaurants we ask how the soups are made. If they don't know we don't order it.
