Re: If you are delivering at Winthrop

WOW, I am so sorry that you experienced that.
I am currently at NSUH since I gave birth via emergency c-section Christmas Eve. I have sent DD back to the nursery every night, because I just can't physically get up fast enough to get to her. Just lifting her out of the bassinet hurts. Especially, since they took me off the pain meds (via IV).
Last night the night nurse that was on call royally pissed me off. She came in and asked me if I was planning on going home tomorrow (today). I told her I wasn't sure, but that my Dr. recommended I stay an extra night since I'm entitled to it. She says "ok, we'll I'm just going to go ahead and treat you like a discharge patient for tomorrow"
My husband turns to her and says "she isn't sure yet, she will decided tomorrow morning" Again she says "ok, we're going to process like a discharge" smiles and walks out. DH were just sitting there a bit at her response.
She comes back a few hours later while I was in the bathroom and again mentions being discharged. my DH tells her that I have not confirmed that. She calls me through the bathroom and says "oh, Mrs. bxxxxxxx you changed your mind about leaving tomorrow?"
I opened the door and as calm as I could said 'I never made up mind, I was going to decide tomorrow, I'm feeling the pain a bit more right now, and am not sure about leaving tomorrow' she tells me 'Motrin can help you tolerate it at home!
I nearly lost it on the wench at that point - told her I will make up my mind tomorrow and that this conversation was done for the night.
my DH tried to diffuse the situation a bit and said "thank you have a good night and Merry Christmas!" She spun around and in a nasty tone said "I'm Jewish - it's Happy Hanukkah"
I am staying another night per the recommendation of the daytime nurse who said "Why wouldn't you stay?"' And also writing a complaint/report on the nurse once I leave.
OMG!! This is absurd!! Definitely complain about her!
Also, congratulations!!!!

If you are delivering at Winthrop
I am not pregnant yet, but my sister-in-law delivered my nephew at Winthrop 2 years ago and I was there multiple times a day, visiting. I was really not impressed with the wing. The nurses were very short tempered and even 2 years ago were reluctant to take my nephew to the nursery when asked to. In addition, the room was not clean to my standards, especially since this was a hospital and a room with a newborn with virtually no immune system was going to be! There was a giant hairball in the corner of the room, the toilet had urine stains when you lifted the lid up, and the sheets on the bed had a stain on it. I called the nurses in and asked them to have someone come in and clean it ASAP, and I was given a dirty look and MAJOR attitude. At the time, my OB/GYN was affiliated with Winthrop and I have since changed to a friend's practice that is affiliated with LIJ Katz's Women's Center. When the time comes, I have absolutely no desire to be there and be treated like that, especially after giving birth! I will say that my sister-in-law and my brother said great things about the labor/delivery team.

If you are delivering at Winthrop
I spoke to a nurse here at NSUH and she said that they have started the newborn in the room transition as of October. However, they are nowhere as strict as Winthrop is. She also confirmed the breast feeding push and that they are very tough with giving formula to new mom's to use.
I personally find that to be over the top and would not deliver there.

This post is scaring me!! My friend warned me of the pacifier and also advised me that I will need a note/script from pediatrician so they will give me formula as I am not breast feeding. The whole being in the room 24/7 is freaking me out. I am having twins- not sure right after giving birth I can handle that!!!!
WHAAAT??!?! The day I need to get a note from my pediatrician for formula for MY BABY , is the day I switch hospitals!! This is absurd!

Re: If you are delivering at Winthrop
I had dd2 there in June via csection, & was bf. There were some nurses who were phenomonal. Others who were downright mean. Also some of the nurses aides were terrible. One afternoon DH went home to be w/ our 3yo & I started having terrible pain. They were not helpful at all. I was in the bed trying to lift dd out of the plastic bassinet & back in all by myself. It freaking hurt! I was only taking Motrin & when I buzzed them to help me get her in/out they were not very helpful. I called DH hysterical. I had no idea why I was in so much pain suddenly. I was scared something was wrong bc I have a clotting disorder. Finally when DH came back & advocated for me a nurse told him it was prob gas from the csection & to have me walk. They couldn't tell me that earlier when I was doubled over?! I was only there 3 nights. I begged my ob to go home early. Also my I had to make a stink to get my IV out bc it was hanging & they kept telling me it had to stay in, even though it was making me so incomfortable. Next time I will just take it out myself & take my chances. I don't know if it was bc it was my second baby & my dh was there a lot, but I felt like they barely checked on me. Only good thing was I had the room to myself the entire time.
Eta: They were really stingy with the underwear & all supplies it seemed! I

Re: If you are delivering at Winthrop
Reading all these posts is frightening me! I delivered there twice in the last 4 years and I'm expecting #3 now and will deliver there again next year. My experiences with the hospital and all the nurses was wonderful both times before. When I had dc#2 there a little over 2 years ago the staff was starting to implement the rooming in policy. It was not super strict and the nurses I encountered were really great about taking the baby back to the nursery.
This makes me a little skeptical about delivering #3 there. I love my OB's so much that I probably won't change and will still deliver at Winthrop.

Re: If you are delivering at Winthrop
I am in the same exact shoes as you but this post has me questioning my choice! With 2 children at home and 1 on the way, I really look forward to my sleep after a c section and I also think that my own room would be nice. I love, love, .ove my obgyn as well but it's going to be a long 5 days at Winthrop if they are not getting great reviews lately! Hoping that maybe over the next 8 months things change a little over there.

If you are delivering at Winthrop
I was there in November with a csection and ended up with postpartum preeclampsia & felt pressured to keep the baby even with all I was dealing with & although I was told I needed to get rest- not to mention the every 4 hour vital check. I didn't have any trouble with supplies though I just hit the call button and got whatever I needed. I don't know if I'm going to stay with my obgyn practice if we are blessed with another child bc of the experience I had unfortunately.

Re: If you are delivering at Winthrop
so i found this little tidbit on the web.
it explains what & why Winthrop is doing what they are doing lately.
i emailed the director of L&D in hopes to get some answers to ease my pregnant-neurotic mind.

Re: If you are delivering at Winthrop
Thank you so much for sharing this but what if we don't plan on breastfeeding at Winthrop? I am looking forward to hearing the experiences of those who deliver there in the next few months.

My friend is being discharged today and they did take the baby for a few hours each night, but she thinks maybe because she had a c section. She is not bfing and I don't think they gave her a hard time about it.
