If you are SAHM or home during day, do you schedule around your childs nap??

My friend commented to me how funny it is that I feel the need to schedule things around Johnnys nap.

She is visiting DC in 2 weeks and wanted to meet at the white house at 11am. That is just when he goes down for a nap. I told her that it would be better if they did some sightseeing stuff and I could meet them for lunch at around 2pm.

I got the vibe that she thinks its odd that I am "rigid" with his nap time. If anyone knows me they know how laid back I am. BUT if there is one thing i've learned over these 2 years it's that if Johnny does not nap, he is miserable. Absolutely stinkin tantrum throwing MISERABLE.

Whatever. It's not getting to me too much, I mean we all have things right? I just didn't think it was so "odd" that I don't want to be out and about during his usual nap time.

Wanted to add..he won't nap in a stroller or car..never has, never will. He will fight it till he's blue in the face! Hence another reason it's impossible for me to do stuff during that time..

Re: If you are SAHM or home during day, do you schedule around your childs nap??

DD is the same way. I have to give her her nap or we pay later for it. She needs her sleep. She sleeps on a daily basis 12-13 hours at night and takes 1 1.5/2 hour nap during the day.

She WILL NOT nap anywhere but her crib. She may sometimes fall asleep in her stroller only on her belly or in a carseat but for only like 20 minutesChat Icon

It's so hard to make plans during the day with people. Nobody understands that my kid needs her nap and thats just that. I can either do things before or later and thats it. We were away about a week ago and her naps were disrupted and she slept even longer to make up for her lost sleep. I know how u feel but u are just doing ur best for ur DC.

I do and have gotten comments from people on occasion. **shrug** My theory is that from what I hear daycare keeps the kids to a schedule, so why would it be so odd to have one at home?

Neither one of my kids has ever really slept well in their car seats, and I can't remember them ever napping in their stroller after being newborns.

I am a SAHM and I definitely try my best to plan around his naps---its not always possibly, but I try my best. Something like that, the meet up time is flexible, I would have said the same. Does she have kids? I know before I had DS this was something I didn't always understand---now as a mom I totally get it, no nap=unhappy baby.

I always paln around naps. The way I see it, are those people who expect anything else to be there helping you when your DC cant sleep at night?

She does! She has 2 boys. They are 2 and 4. She has made comments in the past that they nap when they can, in the car, in the stroller etc...

I wish my son were that flexible but it isn't like that. It takes a bit for him to "shut down".

Of course, there have been a few times where I've had to be out and he couldn't be home to nap..we made it through but it wasn't fun. I just like to avoid that if possible.

I feel bad b/c they are only here for 1 day and wanted me to show them around the mall area of DC. I figure they can cope for the morning w/out me and I'll meet up when my son is refreshed!

I am the same exact way. DD takes one nap a day. for 2hrs. she wont sleep in the car UNLESS she missed nap and its almost dinner time. I dont think she will sleep in a stroller either. I personally feel like her best interest come before thing. HOWEVER on a side note DD has missed a nap on certian occasions or teething related but then i put her down earlier at night and she sleeps later to make up for it.

Don't let it get to you, everyone does what works best for them. I do not plan my day around naps however my DS will nap while out if he gets tired, in the stroller or car.

DW schedules around DD's naptime. We *can* skip her nap once in a while, but we pay for it later that night....

You gotta do what works for you. My son has never napped in the car or stroller. And even if he has it was a 15 or 20 minute cat nap.

I can't stand it when people think that I am crazy for planning my day around my son's nap. But are they the ones who have to deal with the meltdowns of our DC's later on? I always always try my best to schedule things around my son's nap. I no longer care what anyone thinks or says. If they don't like it they can go fly a kite!

I definitely do! Actually, DS is just turning 2.5 now, and it's only been recently that I've loosened up about it, because I see now that the "consequences" Chat Icon are not as bad as they used to be, if he does end up missing a nap. We just came back from a weeklong vaca and the nap schedule definitely went out the window for the trip. But before this summer, NO WAY. Naps were sacred.

I hate it hate it hate it when people tell me "oh they can nap in the car or stroller" Not all kids are alike and not all nap so easily in a car or stroller...Can't they just understand?

I am home for summers and I work around DD's nap schedule. She is not one to sleep in random locations. When DH is home with her, during the school year, it's the same thing---he works around her nap.

Naps were sacred.

I call myself the Nap Nazi...Chat Icon Cuz I am strict with naps. I always put him down at the same time. On occassion i'll put him down a little later (all depends on what time he wakes up)

When we went on the cruise last year I was so nervous cuz I knew that he wasn't going to get his naps in. But luckily he did. Some were short and some were long but I was just glad he got some in. He did have one day where he had a meltdown. One of the stops on the ship was this little private island. They had these little ferry boats that took you to the island. So we went in the morning and we hoped DS would fall asleep on a blanket in the sand. WRONGO!!! He didn't fall asleep and he started having a meltdown so I had to leave we were on the little ferry boat where my son was throwing a major tantrum. People were staring at me like they were annoyed and I just wanted to cry. I was by myself cuz DH was on the beach waiting for his Mom to come back to the beach cuz she had gone to the ship to go get something she forgot. Anyways here is my then 1 year old flipping out and people are looking at me all weird. Then finally he crashed and fell asleep in my arms. And this nice couple who sat across from me started talking to me. GOD BLESS THEM! They kept me sane cuz I wanted to just burst into tears. I had DS in my arms plus the diaper bag and a towel. They took my stuff and carried it for me. The husband even offered to carry DS for me but I said no for fear that he would wake up. They walked me back to my room. They were just a sweet couple.

Ok the reason for this long story is to show you what happens when my son misses a nap. Maybe now that he's 2 it's different cuz he's older who knows but i'm not ready to try it. Maybe when he's 3. I'll start letting up...

I was very strict with the naps, especially while babysitting.
Now, I have to be flexible being that he has EI services, we work around them and sometimes they work around me.
Thankfully DS will nap whenever.
He's napping now and will probably be up by 2 or 2:30.
Yesterday I took him to a playgroup and he napped 3-5.
As long as he gets 2 hours in, he's fine. He's flexible..Thank Goodness.

Generally, yes I do schedule around DD's naps when I can. ESPECIALLY her morning nap. Errands aren't run until the late afternoon around here......

That said, I know there are times when it's better to just forgo the schedule and wing it (special occasions, doctor's appointments, etc).

Re: If you are SAHM or home during day, do you schedule around your childs nap??

Since DD only naps sporatically now I schedule things without worry of naptime. She does fairly well without a nap now, I just bump up her bedtime and she's fine. When she "needed" a nap I would try to avoid going out around naptime but sometimes things would come up so I would prepare by bringing the big stroller, her favorite blanket, etc... (I was blessed with a child that would fall asleep in the car though)

If I can - yes, I really do try to - like you said, it makes for a much more pleasant baby which, in turn, makes our day much better. That said, when the need arises - we are fairly flexible and I try to get his nap in earlier, later or in the car or stroller but, it does stress me out!

I have gotten these comments as well and always from the same couple - who do not have children yet Chat Icon Comments like this annoy me!

I do plan things around naps like going to the store or visiting friends... but if something were planned or a group was getting together... I work around them, I dont say I cant do things because of him napping... He can either nap before or after what is planned! I wouldnt say no we cant go because he has to nap!

I schedule everything around my kids' naptime. If I dont, they are miserable and then no one has a good time.

Yes I do schedule around John's naptime. He gets up around 7:30-8am and we have breakfast and then head out the door to do errands, etc, have lunch and then he goes in his crib around 1:30-2pm and sleeps for like 1.5-2 hours. He goes to bed around 8:30pm. I know there will be sometimes that I will break the cycle but, for the most part I am trying to keep him on track.

I understand how a child can get without a nap. I try to get him down if I can. Sometimes, it's just not possible but, if I have the choice I stick to nap time. Otherwise, no one will have fun.

Do what makes you comfortable - you know what's best for you and everyone around him...
