(CNN)New Covid-19 cases among children are back on the rise after months of declines, just as schools across the United States are gearing up to reopen in a few weeks.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) said Tuesday more than 23,550 child cases of Covid were reported between July 8 and 15 -- nearly double what was being reported in late June. Child age ranges vary by state, according to the group's most recent report, with more than half of states defining children as anyone 19 or younger, and two states -- Utah and Florida -- limiting the range to anyone 14 or younger.
Mississippi health officer warns about Covid-19 surge that has put 7 children in intensive care. The AAP said severe illness remains rare among children, but with Covid-19 cases rising in most of the country once again, experts have warned lagging vaccinations and the ferocious Delta variant could spell trouble for the country's youngest, many of whom are still ineligible for a vaccine. "So many people, unvaccinated individuals, are getting Delta that children are getting swept up along with it, and I think this is going to make things very difficult as the school year opens," Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine, said Tuesday. The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday also stressed the need to take the virus -- and its threat to children -- seriously.
"I think we fall into this flawed thinking of saying that only 400 of these 600,000 deaths from Covid-19 have been in children," CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said in a Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions hearing. "Children are not supposed to die. And so, 400 is a huge amount for respiratory season." ...
Thank you for posting this. All this "NOT MY KID" when it comes to the vaccine, yet willing to chance lifelong health effects from the virus. Makes no sense to me.
It makes perfect sense as the lifelong health effects from the vaccine are unknown as well.
The kids we know that were covid positive either were asymptomatic OR had very limited symptoms (crankiness, low grade fever) that I feel it's worth the chance of my kids getting it compared to getting the vaccine.
No one wants to talk about what the vaccine could do later on in children. Only that you are selfish if you or your kids don’t get it. What if they are infertile? Will these parents feel guilty?
Is there anything that says the vaccine causes or could cause infertility? In the infinite WW way, show us the proof? Where are the stats? Who is saying that is even a possibility? Where is that coming from?
Again something that has been out there and they can’t prove yet since this is an experimental vaccine. It CAN be a side effect though. I know you don’t have kids but would you be willing to sacrifice for your step kids if they were younger?
Ohhhh....it's out there...well then, it must be true. Where does it say that it can be a side effect, other than somewhere "out there"???
This is exactly what I am talking about - posting like you are the authority on everything, with absolutely nothing to support your statement

Re: If you are vaccinated, are you still wearing a mask?
The way I see it is the vaccination is the treatment right now. The Delta variant isn’t stronger they say DW link .
However, it is highly contagious. They have also identified a Delta plus variant.
Getting the vaccination helps with not getting hospitalized it seems. And that works for me. I still have yet to get my vaccination and I am working on that. I need a support person with me because of my Vasovagal response, and they won’t allow that. I have worked out a place out in the countryside, so I can be a comfortable area.
If we can get a hold on it now, with from what I understand the basic genome sequence in the mRNA vaccine form (? someone help me here), it can help with how our bodies deal with further mutations.
The UK is a total mess right now.
It’s not over. Vaccinate the adults now and let the children deal with the sniffles (NB: I think that there has been some evidence of it (Delta) being worse for children).

This exactly.
And FTR Mississippi is routinely ranked as one of the least healthiest states in the entire country. Their total hospitalizations of kids make up almost 30% of the entire country's rate for kids under 18. It's not a huge leap to say some of these kids may have been extremely unhealthy to begin with and that this number does not reflect the average risk to most kids. These statistics that are being shared to death don't scare me because I can do navigate the CDC website and do math just fine on my own.

Same.
Exactly, people are ridiculous. My son is already on medication for something that may effect his heart the last thing I am going to do is put a vaccine that has been enlarging peoples hearts. Where a 13 year boy died from it a few weeks ago because of this. And before I hear about the number, I know that rate is low but I don’t care. It’s not worth for my son to potentially be a part of that very low percentage. Covid seems like less of a risk than the vaccine for MY KID, so yes NOT MY KID!!
He also did not get it from my DH or I in a small apartment. I also had it a few months back which to seems to offer the same protection as the vaccine. The numbers are low for getting it a second time.
People want to give the vaccine to their kids go ahead. I don’t care or judge.
ETA: it’s also funny how people make sweeping judgements without knowing anyone’s thought process or about them. For example my young adult step son got the vaccine and it was 100% encouraged and supported by me.

If you are vaccinated, are you still wearing a mask?
So, we went away to the Jersey Shore last week. Me & my husband are vaccinated. My DD is not (she's 11). We did not wear masks as no one did and we were mostly outside, but didn't even wear them indoors either- since we don't have to and no one else was...we just figured it was okay. My DD did wear hers a few times, but didn't sometimes. we did not see any one, any where wearing masks. We are home now, DD has fever and a cough. Taking her to the ped today. It's probably just a virus. But what if it's not? IDK what parent in my position would be like "oh well, it might be Covid, NO BIG DEAL" Because that's definitely NOT how I'm feeling. I'm nervous and will be until her results come back. And if she's positive- I'll feel guilty as hell- because I'm her mom and she followed my lead and I'm supposed to look out for her. What if she gets really sick...what if she passes it to others...what if there are long term health affects? I'm still on the fence about getting her vaccinated when she's eligible...but I'm still scared she or one of us might get it too....does anyone else feel this way? there is no middle ground here???

I actually am (and was) more worried about my kids getting the vaccine and getting sick from that or worse. My oldest has had some symptoms and odd ones that I told them to go to the doctor if it continues. Youngest won’t get unless mandatory at school as not interested as even though they have an underlying issue, is more worried about heart issues after getting the vaccine.

My son wear his mask even if we don’t and he constantly asks me when he can get the vaccine. He does not want to get Covid. We lost too many (friends and family) so he definitely has a fear of it. A healthy fear IMO. That fear has been keeping him safe but it’s not enough to keep him from school and activities

My Brother in laws best friend lost his healthy 18 year old son to a blood clot this week that they are attributing to the vaccine. So everyone has their reasons for things. My child, my choice and everyone else can go fuk themselves to be honest. My concern is my child. And only that. And no, I'm not at all concerned with her getting Covid at her age. I think she had it actually back in March 2020 but who knows. It's actually the least of my worries. I'd be more worried of me or DH got it. But a healthy 11 year old, no more worried than any childhood illness she can pick up

Thanks. I hope so too- and deep down, I feel like it IS just a cold. Pre-Covid, I would have waited it out a few days to see if it progressed, but now I don't feel like I can do that. My DD has a serious fear too- same situation with people we knew sick and passed away. She's really nervous about going to the Dr.

It’s so scary now. You’re right. 2 years ago, we would have just waited a few days.
I hope she feels better though and that she’s just fighting a cold.

My Brother in laws best friend lost his healthy 18 year old son to a blood clot this week that they are attributing to the vaccine. So everyone has their reasons for things. My child, my choice and everyone else can go fuk themselves to be honest. My concern is my child. And only that. And no, I'm not at all concerned with her getting Covid at ger age. I think she had it actually back in March 2020 but who knows. It's actually the least of my worries. I'd be more worried of me or DH got it. But a healthy 11 year old, no more worried than any childhood illness she can pick up
I see your point about the vaccine. Even though both DH and I got it, doesn't mean I'm giving it to DD. My DH (39 years old) had a small stroke about 5 months after his vaccine (he's in health care, so he got in January)-- we haven't figured out what caused it and it's always a question of "was it the vaccine?"- we may never know. It could have been ANYTHING. He's fine now and we're still seeing a million doctors. I still stand by our decision to get the vaccine and I respect your decision not to get it.
I don't agree about not being worried if DD gets COVID. but we can agree to disagree and be respectful, right? Not everyone here can and that' why this thread is 10 pages long.

I hope that your DD is okay. I know how nerve-wracking it can be.
Both of my kids (12 and 8) had COVID earlier this year and I'd be lying if I said it didn't freak me out Thankfully, they were both OK but it was scary nonetheless. It's good you got her tested, it's better to know for sure. My DD's COVID presented like a cold. She felt a little cr@ppy and was congested for 2-3 days, she also completely lost her taste and smell. My son was asymptomatic.
Hang in there. She will be fine.

This isn’t to minimize your brother in laws friends loss in any way or convince people to get or not get the shot.. My sister in law, who had a very mild case of Covid, wound up with multiple blood clots that were caught just in time and is on blood thinners still months later. Covid itself has been known to cause blood clots as well.
There is no absolute right or wrong answer. It should remain personal choice. If it was 100% that vaccinated people don’t get or spread it, there may be more of an argument. But we do. Vaccinated or not, you can get it and spread it. Only difference “should be” severity.
We shut shit down. Ruined lives and livelihoods. And Got some sort of handle on it. It’s now time for people to weigh the risks and make their own decisions. Why are grown adults constantly going at each other’s throats. MYOB at this point. Do what’s best for you.

Re: If you are vaccinated, are you still wearing a mask?
Posted by Deeluvsvinny
I hope your DD feels better. I will tell you there are a lot of sick kids right now. July has been a crazy month, pretty much all my coworkers had or have a sick child and it hasn’t been Covid. Hopefully your daughter gets better and it’s not covid.
I don’t like my kid getting sick with anything and yes I would be worried if he got sick with Covid as this would be the first time of him getting this type of Virus and you don’t know how the body will react. However, I don’t let it consume me or worry about it all day because as statistics, data and science shows kids are the least effected. So the chances of him getting mildly sick and surviving are very high and in his favor.
The vaccine for me poses a health risk that includes death for my son. So Covid is the lesser risk for me. However, my stepson has chronic asthma, in this case Covid poses a greater risk to him. Therefore he was vaccinated.
