If you called a business and heard a dog barking in the background, what would you think?

If you called a business and heard a dog barking in the background, what would you think?

One of the infrequent visiting employees brought his Basset Hound into the office today. The dog is SO adorable. However, he's barked probably 10 times in the 15 minutes he's been here. I'm getting a kick out of it, but I don't answer the phones.

I bring my dog into work every Friday and he doesn't bark at all, unless I give him the "speak" command. Which was kind of the 'deal' about having him here, that the clients couldn't hear him, he didn't soil the carpet Chat Icon and was well behaved.

But would you have a negative opinion of a business if you knew they had dogs in the office?

I worked in a small advertising firm that had dogs- sometimes they barked- it never impeded me from doing business with clients- and honestly my clients liked visiting and playing w/ the dogs.

Honestly, I would assume it was a small home office. Depending on the type of business, that could be good or bad, but it would put a slant on what I thought.

Unless I was calling a pet related business, or someplace like a garage, body shop, something like that, I would think it was very unprofessional. Also, when people bring their kids into the office and you can her them shouting, same kind of thing.

Hope you never deal with ad agencies, most allow pets in the office because people put in such long days

If I can keep my pets quiet while I am on the phone at home, I would expect any that go to the office could be kept quiet as well... I guess I'm in the wrong business. I work crazy long hours and don't get to bring my ets to work! Chat Icon

To the OP, I would assume someone was working from home or at a small / home office, unless it was a tack store, pet store, or somewhere else I would expect it. I wouldn't consider a bark or two unprofessional, but incessant barking the whole time I'm on the phone would really be annoying.

Then I'd be jealous I can't bring my pets to work with me! Chat Icon

ETA - As I think about this, I think if the dog was barking incessantly, I'd probably think it was outside the office (unless of course the dog is right next to the phone and obviously inside!)

Re: If you called a business and heard a dog barking in the background, what would you think?

my DH often worked from home for his former job where he had to talk to editors & analysts at times on the phone or do conference calls...i am sure our dogs barked while on calls...i don't think anyone thought he was any less professional...at least i would hope not...but then again i am a dog lover. I would probably ask about the dog i heard in the b/g...haha.

Depending on the type of business, I might think it's unprofessional. My firm is huge and we have a lot of people who work from home. Sometimes I'm on conference calls with dogs barking in the background. I'm not a fan.

I work in a pet friendly office. We are in the financial industry.. however we try to set ourselves apart from the 'corporate culture'.

When a dog barks and I am on the phone, I tend to explain it to the client "Excuse Beau! We sometimes will allow our employees to bring their pets into the office when they will be working late, etc.."

So far this seems to give our clients a good feeling about the way we treat our employees.. and their families. A business that treats it's employees well is a business I like to work with.

If it was making it difficult to have a conversation, I would end the conversation as soon as possible & limit business with that company if at all possible.

I am glad I have never worked in an office that allowed dogs. I would have to quit.

Well, I often have my window open at work and I work in an area where you have commercial & residential next to each other. The house next door has a dog that barks & I would think you can hear it when I am on the phone, also I may have a client in the waiting room with a screaming child, so on both counts i honestly wouldn't think anything of it if I heard a dog or child.

I would hope that your company would consider their employees before making the office pet friendly. Everyone in our office was consulted before we determined that we would allow dogs - if anyone had indicated that they were afraid of dogs or that they were allergic, we would not have created the policy.

I think it would be obnoxious of any company to allow that policy if it might cause the imminent departure of a valued employee!

Re: If you called a business and heard a dog barking in the background, what would you think?

We are a small office, but rent space in a building. The dog policy was put into effect because of me actually and when I came home with my new dog. It was offered to me instead of going home at lunch or boarding him somewhere.

It seems a little crazy, that I couldn't leave my dog alone, but he had emotional challenges in the beginning. He doesn't now, and I credit a big part of that to the people in this office and building.

They get mad when I don't stick to the Friday schedule for some reason and leave him home. Chat Icon

We planned ahead of time, made sure everyone was ok with it. We even talk to potential employees about it during the 2nd/3rd round of interviews. If anyone was afraid of dogs or allergic, that would be the end of that.

I would think that I am calling Greenfreak's office. Chat Icon

Otherwise, I would think that the company is based out of someone's house.

If it was a small business or even customer service (since some of that is work from home) I would think that the person on the other line was sitting near an open window or home.

A large company i would Chat Icon but not have a negative view

I actually work in an Advertising Agency, no one brings in pets, or children. This is the second ad agency I have worked in, and pretty much everyone I know works in Recruitment Advertising...no one brings dogs into work. We deal with big private and public sector clients, its not the done thing.
