Honestly, I would assume it was a small home office. Depending on the type of business, that could be good or bad, but it would put a slant on what I thought.

Unless I was calling a pet related business, or someplace like a garage, body shop, something like that, I would think it was very unprofessional. Also, when people bring their kids into the office and you can her them shouting, same kind of thing.
Hope you never deal with ad agencies, most allow pets in the office because people put in such long days
I actually work in an Advertising Agency, no one brings in pets, or children. This is the second ad agency I have worked in, and pretty much everyone I know works in Recruitment Advertising...no one brings dogs into work. We deal with big private and public sector clients, its not the done thing.
A lot of agencies in NYC allow pets, sory yours hasn't opened up to something that's been going on for 10-15 years now.
I enjoy playing with the dogs at Morpheus Media and Optimedia.

Re: If you called a business and heard a dog barking in the background, what would you think?
I work from home in sales for a small company based in OH. I do Webex demonstrations and on occasion-my babies may be heard crying in the background and my dogs barking. I deal with universities. Should the situation arise I address the fact that I work from a home office remotely and move on. I really do think those types of situations are very common and don't think it really affects many people

Re: If you called a business and heard a dog barking in the background, what would you think?
I work from home sometimes and when my dog barks I apologize and explain that I am home. People on my block get a lot of UPS deliveries and my dog hates the UPS man and his truck. I don't think I could stop him from barking then but as I have said before, my dog is a bit touched! When I work from my office, I can hear ambulances fairly often and I know my clients hear it and they don't really question it. A lot of them are very local and they know the street and that it is near the firehouse.

I forgot to say my DH works from home now for an ad agency but when he worked for one in NYC, most of the employees brought their dogs to work.
I don't know what it is about ad agencies, he knows another one who has a dog friendly office too!

Just to jump in on this.. I work in an ad agency too - this is the 4th i've worked in and no one allows dogs here (and we're not a corporate agency by any means). My first agency did allow them, but it ended when the dogs were peeing all over the place. Which would be precisely the reason why i would assume most places don't allow dogs. Also, many buildings have strict policies on pets and it may not be up to a tenant if they allow them or not. Racheeee, you're in the UK right? If anyone is 'ahead' of the times in advertising its the UK, so i wouldn't feel like you're not as "cool" as NY
to the OP - i have to think dogs barking in the background would only change my opinion depending on the type of business i was calling. If i thought i was calling a corporate office and expected them to act as such, then a dog would throw me off. If i knew i was calling a freelancer or someone who had a home office, it would not bother me at all.

Re: If you called a business and heard a dog barking in the background, what would you think?
I work in a small office with my dad, and for the past 10 years, we have brought the family dog to the office with us. He's a small jack russell mix.
All of our clients know him well and even bring him treats and stuff and like seeing him pop his head out from his pet bed next to my desk to say hello.
I suppose some might see it as extremely unprofessional, but never seemed to be a problem for us before.

But would you have a negative opinion of a business if you knew they had dogs in the office?
No, I would be jealous.
Ditto! My first job out of college allowed it but I didn't have a dog at the time.
