it is  friends of ours went for the husbands birthday last year (they are HUGE foodies and hit all the expensive restaurants in NYC). They went with two other couples and because it's a prix fixe menu (which does not include drinks, etc). the bill came to $800 PER couple! 
That's the reason I have not been! Their TASTING menu is $275 pp.. without wine.
DH took me to Per Se for my birthday. NOT that great imo (we've been to a lot of restaurants) and it was $800 total bill.

See, I don't love this kind of place. I think of it as "man food"...hunks of meat that go on forever....I just get sick looking at all of that meat.

We have very similar taste 
I was going to suggest Grammercy Tavern or Peasant. DH took his brother to momofuku som for his bachelor party and they are still talking about it. Im dying to go!
