To me, I could be wrong ....it's two different situations.
adoption - looking to add to your family.
foster - looking to offer a stable home to a child for a temporary situation.
I think fostering is an amazing thing to do. I just think it would be really hard to let them go and wonder how their life turned out.
This is generally true, but a lot of times the foster children are put up for adoption and the foster parents are one of the first in line to adopt the child.
After talking to Nassau Children Services, adoption is NOT as common as perceived. Children Services goal is really to put back children with their family. I am talking about LI.
The current % of adoption of a baby (0-3 yo) from foster care is about 5-10 % max. Those are numbers given by Nassau State. DH and I asked.
It may have been a time where parents went through foster care to adopt but Nassau and Suffolk Counties really try to place the children back to their parents.
There are children up for adoption but they are much older. 8+ and mostly teens.
It is true that they try to place children back with their parents. But my family did foster care on Long Island and in Seattle. In Long Island 4 out of the 13 (I think it was 13, I have lost count) foster kids we had were put up for adoption (we only took babies up to 3). In Seattle we took care of 2 babies, a brother and sister. Very long story short, both were put up for adoption, plus another brother that was not placed with us.
It is not a rarity, but it is not common either. The longer they are in the system the less people who want to adopt them. So they remain in the system. It is a horrible cycle.
