If you had a scheduled induction to give birth...
Did you get a call beforehand to come for pre-surgical testing? The woman was like “what type of surgery are you having?” And I said “None.” She was like “Oh” and That was the end of the conversation. Just wondering if it’s the norm to go for pre-surgical testing before an induction.

I was scheduled twice for induction and was never called for presurgical testing

Re: If you had a scheduled induction to give birth...
That was probably a mix up. Maybe they thought you were having a scheduled C section

No.,, but maybe it’s for bloodwork (you need that for an epidural).

No, only for my c-section. I also feel there is always a chance you might go before hand and pre-surgical testing is a waste.

No testing here but this would have been the case for me. I delivered a few hours before I was scheduled to be induced.

Really?? I’ve had epidurals for my previous kids & never had bloodwork first. Is that a new thing?

I had a scheduled induction at stony brook in November and didn't get a call about presurgical testing.

A scheduled c-section requires pre-surgical testing?

When I was in L&D in labor with DD almost 9 years ago they drew blood. They wouldn't give me my epidural until the results came back. I think they need to check certain levels to make sure you can have an epidural. I forget what it is though they are checking for
ETA- I looked it up- it's your platelet level. If you have low platelets you can't have an epi

I believe so as it's surgery.

Stupid question but do they do this right when they put your iv in? With my second she had a complication that was diagnosed based on a blood test and I always covered when the heck they took a sample of my blood. I've seriously been wondering this for 4 years lol.

I'm trying to remember, it's been so long, lol, but I feel like when I got into the triage area of L&D, like when they check you to see if you are dilated enough to be admitted, put you on the fetal monitor, check vitals, etc, that's when they drew some blood.

Omg that’s terrifying! imagine being in that agony & told I couldn’t get an epi I’d freak the fukk out. Bad enough having to wait for bloodwork to come back

I think the blood test is for hepatitis? It’s some ny state requirement, bc they never had time to do it before birth and i fought them on it all three times.

Maybe, but the blood work they are looking at before you can get an epidural is to check for platelets. If you have low platelets you can't have an epi.

Re: If you had a scheduled induction to give birth...
They did not take my blood before my induction and I had an epidural. I was not scheduled to be induced but was sent right from my doctor's office due to low fluid.
They also definitely did NOT take it when they put in the IV. I'm 100% positive.
ETA: The only testing they asked for was my strep B test results which I had in my hospital bag anyway.

They probably had your platelet count already from other blood work you had done during the pregnancy. For some reason they didn't have mine on file so I had to have blood drawn before they would give me an epi

Ugh that would suck if they told you last second sorry no drugs for you! I'd probably stab someone with a scalpel.
ETA: Though my doctor's office stopped taking my blood around 30 weeks and platelet count is so fluid those results wouldn't be helpful.

If you had a scheduled induction to give birth...
I feel my pre-surgical for my c-section was me doing the paperwork, co-pay and a conversation where to go the day of. I don’t remember having blood drawn. For my induction with my 1st kid I didn’t go to the hospital prior and paid my co-pay a few weeks after giving birth.

I’ve had 3 scheduled inductions. Never got a call beforehand. I’m pretty sure I had bloodwork done when I got there for my induction. It’s all a blur though

This happened to my friend! She was actually trying to go without and epi but then caved and they said “well sorry we can’t give you one anyway” because of her bloodwork. Yikes!
