if you have a cement base for your floor (basement, high ranch etc)...
what kind of flooring do you have over it? hardwood, laminate, carpeting, something else?

we bought a better padding and then put carpet on it. I wanted laminate but the floor(cement) wasn't in the best condition and wouldn't have been even in the end.

We live in a Levitt cape built on a cement slab. Now we have a floating laminate floor, but soon we are going to be doing wood floors. Scott

Laminate. First we put a plastic sheet over the cement and then the laminate (which has built-in padding) over it. It looks great.
My parents have carpeting in their family room and tile in the kitchen/

Re: if you have a cement base for your floor (basement, high ranch etc)...
we plan on putting in berber carpet with a thick pad down. this is a ways off though, b/c we're going to have to completely re-do the basement and the kitchen is first!

We have laminate and it is floating (we didn't glue it down). We have no issues at all with it like this.

we are thinking about this too...right now there's cheap tile and we want to do something else. do you think the carpet will get that mildew smell?

Re: if you have a cement base for your floor (basement, high ranch etc)...
Alot of the basements have too much moisture to put down any of the "pretty" floors...we have nada in our basement bc its unfinished...
But my mama has thick padding + berber. If you ever have water in your basement you are in big time trouble with rugs and laminate is safer...

Re: if you have a cement base for your floor (basement, high ranch etc)...
I live in a splanch, and I grew up in a splanch of a different style. These houses typcially have a lot of rooms that are on slabs. I have seen all possibilities and there really isn't anything you can't do with proper installation. My kitchen, foyer and dining room are on a slab and they have ceramic tile. We have a den on a slab that has carpeting with thick padding but it is over tile that the former owners had. My ceramic tile gets cold and I am sure that the slab makes it worse. We have an area rug over in the dining room and that makes it more cozy.

Re: if you have a cement base for your floor (basement, high ranch etc)...
thanks everyone... we have a high ranch and there's carpeting now... we got an estimate for laminate from a flooring company that did all our hardwood floors, but when i was talking to a guy in home depot, he told me i can't put laminate over cement. i was because i didn't think a professional flooring company that did 4 other rooms in my house would tell me they could do something that couldn't be done, but it got me nervous.

Re: if you have a cement base for your floor (basement, high ranch etc)...
you can put anything down with proper subflooring.
We have a high ranch and have hardwoods on the first floor. we built a subfloor over the cement, put moisture barriers, and we have central air, so the humidity is controlled.

Re: if you have a cement base for your floor (basement, high ranch etc)...
We have a colonial and recently redid the basement - we were going to do wood or laminate but the cement was uneven so we decided upon berber carpet with thick padding. We've never had any moisture down there so we weren't too concerned with that.

i have a high ranch and we installed hard wood 2 years ago and LOVE it! it was actually cheaper than laminate. you can definitely put laminate or hard wood with the proper subfloor. FM me if you want any details or the name of who we used. we just used them again 2 weeks ago to refinish DD's bedroom floor (not part of the new wood they installed downstairs) and they did a great job again.

We have hardwood (was there when I bought the house) and have never had any problems. You need a certain subfloor but otherwise it's the same as installing anywhere else in your house.

Same for us too. It was no problem to put laminate over the cement. We went with a floating laminate floor
