Wow, ours is set high. 76 day and night--unless it's really brutally hot out, then I might adjust it.

We're not big AC people though, so it really just goes on when we need it to, plus our house has a fair amount of shade outside which probably helps.

I rarely find it too hot at 76.

On the new thermostats, it's set for 72, but the old ones are still mounted on the wall, and they say it's 75. I have to get a 3rd set of thermometers to find out what the *actual* temp is.

Most of the time, it doesn't need to be chilly, we just want to take the humidity out of the air.

we used to have it at 72 when were home and at night, but it was too cold. Now we have it at 73 when we're home and 74 at night. It works for us.

Every house is different. Some keep cooler than others due to the insulation and construction. I don't think it is a fair fight to ask others what they keep their house at.

However, if you are really hot, then I don't see the argument? Does he think you are lying? Chat Icon Dude your hot, turn it up!

This is the best post on the thread.

Other than insulation you also need to consider the size of the home, number of units and size of units.

I can't imagine the LIPA bills of the folks hanging out at 68-72

We have ours set for 75 also - its pretty comfortable at that temp - sometimes we even go to 74 - but thats pretty rare.

Re: If you have central air, please help me settle an argument!

i dont have central air

my parents had central air in their 3 story townhouse in staten island - it was always set to 76 in the summer - the third floor (where the bedrooms were) was always SWELTERING!! but otherwise the house was pretty cool...

now they have a house in florida - they still keep it set to 76....it's a 1 floor home and it is always comfortable....in florida its all relative to the outside temp - so if it's 95 degrees 76 degrees indoors is almost 20 degrees cooler - so you do feel cool compared to outdoors...

they never go lower than 76 and they do it to save money - not sure how much it actually saves them though - but when we have central air we'll probably try to do the same...

Ours is set for 78 during the day when we are at work & then drops to 73-74 at night. In our house that is more then comfortable. There are even times you need a sweatshirt!

We don't have it on during the day, we set it to 74 or 72 at night.

If one of us is really hot though (me) - I'll bump it down to a temp I feel comfortable at it. Be it 70 or 68.

We have it on 74 all the time. Being in NC, maybe we are more used to the heat, I don't know. If I set it lower, I'd be freezing....

73-74 at night. If we didn't have the baby it would probably be 71-72.

Re: If you have central air, please help me settle an argument!

If I could I would keep it set at 80.
I swear to you- I am not comfy in summer clothes if it dips below 80 in my house.
However- with my husband around- it's at 68-70 tops!
Brrrrrrr.........

We keep it at 77-78.

When it's 103 degrees outside, that feels downright cool in comparison! Chat Icon

Our LIPA bills are high. Trust me.
But in my husband's opinion his comfort is worth every single penny.
So he doesn't care and blasts the AC all summer long...

I love comfort as well but hate wasting energy.

We are well insulated and are running 16 ser Lenox units - every bit helps to not waste energy or tax the system to the point of sporadic service
