If you have children or are planning to...
... how important to you is it to have a big yard? If you absolutely loved the house, but didn't have a yard for the kids to play in, would you still buy it?

If it is on a quiet street, a small yard can be OK.
We have 1/2 an acre and we have already said that we would want the same or more if we buy another house.

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
We are looking at homes that have a decent yard where we can build a deck (if it doesn't have one already) and plenty of room for the little ones. :D

A big yard? Depends on what you describe has big. The house we just bought is 62*121 which isn't huge but decent enough so we can eventually put a pool or whatever and the kids can play.
It is definitely important to have a good size yard though. I don't want them playing in the street/front yard.

I have 4 and I can tell you without the yard I dont know what I'd do. I've lived in apts. forever with my two oldest because I had no choice but I can tell you dragging them to the park when I had other things to do was a chore.

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
I don't know what people's definition of a "big" yard is...
But to be honest i don't want a HUGE piece of property
1/4 of an acre would be just fine for me

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
We bought our house before we were even engaged, but we did consider children in the plans. Our house is on a semi-busy street, which can be a big negative, but we fell in love with our deck and yard. It's also a wooded area, so we don't have neighbors behind us. A yard is something we take into consideration when looking to move.

Our lot is 40 x 135 and it is big enough for us. I wouldn't buy our next house if the lot was smaller then that. Believe it or not our lot size is very big for our town

A decent size property was important to us for a number of reasons: children, dogs and resale.
We wouldn't even look at it if was less than .5 acre.
We currently live on 1 acre and "property shrinkage" has already set in.

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
We didn't need a "large" lot but I did want a nice backyard. We looked at so many houses on corner lots but I hated how you had only a side yard or almost none at all.
Our backyard is big enough for a few kids to run around (and have a ton of toys out as well) and we have a large deck as well, and both were big selling points for us when we bought the house (I was PG about to give birth!).

One of the things on my list of things we needed was a yard. I've always had a good size yard and didn't want a house without one. I don't think we would have even considered a house without one.

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
A yard is VERY important to me!! We currently have 60' x 100' which makes for a decent size yard....but I probably would not want to consider a pool because I would loose space for when we have kids to let them run around. If we were to move....well then I would consider nothing smaller then 100' x 100' so that we could put in a pool & still have yard space!

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
A large yard was very important to us. We left Nassau and bought in Suffolk with this in mind. We're in Lindenhurst so the lots aren't huge throughout but our property is 2.5 lots or .33 acre
We love having the large yard for our future children, it has so much potential, swingswets, pool, soccer, wiffleball, football... If we ever buy another house we will not consider anything smaller until future children are grown we retire.

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
We bought this house knowing there was no backyard, but two side yards. Do I wish it was different? Yep..so our next house will have a bigger yard.

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
i grew up in an apartment with no backyard when i was a kid and no one in my family had a yard to play in my grandparents lived in woodhaven where the yards are concrete so for me its very important and we bought a house with a huge enough yard for a swingset and a pool so my kids can have what i didnt

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
Since I grew up with a big yard (3.5 acres) there has to be some sort of a yard.... Granted...it won't be that big, but at least a 60x100 lot...

DH moans and grumbles about having a house with a big yard (his Dad forced him to pick a bag of weeds everyday when he was younger ) but we both agree that having a nice sized yard is important. not only for kids but we will probably have some kind of a dog too. having a big yard also means more privacy! it just makes sense for us.

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
We bought with a back yard as a 'must' for dogs and any future kids. We have .3 and even that seems a little small when we think about things we want to do and put in the back yard.

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
We just moved into our first house...we love it, it is on 1/3 of an acre (not huge but big enough for a pool, swingset (when the time comes). It has a nice deck already
The house itself is not big but the area is great, once we have a few kids, we will probably need to add a second story.

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
A big yard was a pretty important factor to us. Our home is 90x170.
It does take Michael a long time to mow the lawn though.
