Re: If you have children or are planning to...
Very important. We are actually buying a new house now because we hate the fact that the house we are in now doesn't really have a yard for her to play in.

It was very important to me. DH wanted a condo and to stay in the city, while I wanted to move to the suburbs. So we compromised we stayed in the city and got house with a yard. Lots in Chicago are usually not very big. We got lucky and got an oversized lot.

Re: If you have children or are planning to...
our kids are older, but a good sized yard is important. Kids have a lot of stuff & if you are an outdoor person you'll spend a lot of time outside. Our yard is much smaller than we wanted but very big for our neighborhood. I'm not a fan of a giant lawn anyway, so we are in the process of adding hardscaping to make it more private & have areas for different functions. Our property is a little over 100 wide & the back yard is about 50 deep, but people always say it seems bigger.

We're looking for a big backyard and a basement.

Thanks for all the replies. They are basically what I expected. We found a house I love (yes, me - trying to talk DH into it) but it has no backyard. Actually, it has a backyard but there is an inground pool so there is almost no grass. If only the pool wasn't there...

If only the pool wasn't there... if you really don't want the pool, have it filled with dirt, remove it... etc. the taxes would probably go down as an added bonus.

It crossed my mind but it's such a nice pool in great condition (new liner last year) I'd hate to fill it in. Oh well, my child comes first.

My mom wanted to fill in her pool and the town told her that she would have to have all the plumbing removed and then have it filled
