If you have done Triathlons in the LI/NY area - come in - newbie questions!
I am entertaining the idea of doing a tri. I am brand, spanking new. Like - newborn new!
Can anyone suggest the following:
A good, beginner triathlon I should set my sight on?
Good training resources - websites, books, etc?
Gear I should ask for from Santa?
Anything else I need to know?
TIA!

Re: If you have done Triathlons in the LI/NY area - come in - newbie questions!
I've done sprint and super sprint triathlons. Tobay has a nice one. both the ends of the bike and run are downhill (although the first half is up ) There is a great race in Cape Cod that I have done a few times and it makes a great weekend! Montauk has one in the summer as well. I did a super sprint in San Diego - which would be good for a first race. It wasn't my first and I wished I had done the regular sprint.
I've been thinking about trying an Olympic distance tri and then maybe a half ironman in 2011/12.
gear -
wet suit - although there are rules about water temperature and wearing wet suits. Over 78 degrees you forfeit any prize if you wear a wet suit. I have a wet suit shirt, so I can wear a jogging bra under neath and bathing suit bottoms. I usually throw on biking shorts after the run and a tank (and socks, shoes, hat). but a full or a half wetsuit makes you more buoyant in thee water and makes swimming a bit easier.
if you don't have a nice bike think about it. I don't really like biking, so I have never had a really good bike, but I'm thinking about getting something nice if I take on and Olympic distance.
Unless you get serious, I think regular running shoes are fine for the biking - and saves at the transition area.
I'm no expert, so I hope that little bit helps.

ah - it's the downhill I love! When I lived in San Diego, I had to push my bike up a hill walking! I just couldn't do it!

This is actually one of the reasons I want to do this - to face that fear!!!

practice with keeping your hand slightly gripping the break. I don't think I could go full speed down a hill.

I would start with a sprint or mini.

Is that indicated when I search for races? How do I find those types of tri?

I think the Town of Hempstead one is pretty good- I trained for that one a couple of years ago and wasn't able to actually do it because of a hurricane, but it still seemed like a good beginner one.
Its a 1 mi ocean swim in LB, 10 mile bike, 6 mile run- I believe.
I was actually thinking about trying again for this one for 2011. Its usually the 2nd week of September

What kind of bike would you guys recommend? And would doing Spin during the winter be enough to train?
ETA - is there a couch to 5K or Hal Higdon type plan for triathlons?
