Re: If you know hair color come on in...
Tell her that you want her to use a cool blonde shade. I THINK that should help.
I color my own hair and I always go for cool shades to avoid the orange.

It's a dark blonde/light brown (not really sure because I dye it so much).
I've been to many different hairdressers and no one has seemed to get it right. There's always a golden tint to it and I want a pale color. So I'm thinking (even with pictures) I'm telling them something wrong.
I'll mention the cool shades to them...hopefully that helps.

You have my hair color then!
they aren't leaving it in long enough. When I get my hair highlighted, it removes all the color and it comes out white! they then have to tone it to add the color/shade I want..
Do you need to go to another place? I can give you a recommendation if you do.
You need them to make it platinum blonde.. and then when they tone it, they need to add a blonder with a violet/blue base to it.. nothing with gold or reds..

I usually say creamy or beige-y blonde so they get the idea. No words like caramel.

bicosi is right! In order for you to get the hair color you want you need them to strip all the color and then add the color you want back in. Think of it as a coloring page, you wouldn't be able to get the right color if your coloring book page was yellow, you need the page to be white so you can add your color on top. My hairdresser explained it to me this way when we were discussing hair color. If you want her number FM me, she does amazing color!

Re: If you know hair color come on in...
I like my hairdresser now...I recently switched to her but I went back light brown in fear that I wouldn't get the color I was looking for. I'll give her a shot at the blonde color.
Do you think I'll insult her by explaining to her that I want my her bleached then toned to this color w. a voilet/blue base? I don't want her to get mad that I'm telling her how to do her job.

bring in the picture and make sure you tell her you want a platinum blonde color.. nothing GOLD, no yellows, or anything like that.
not an insult at all.. she provided a service and you weren't happy with it.. so go back and have her do it the way you want it.

Re: If you know hair color come on in...
I think that what you are looking for is more ash to the color and less warmth. The orangey red colors are considered warm. I go for ash all the time and my hair still comes through in a somewhat reddish tone because sometimes your underlying color just pulls through in those tones. I get it ashy enough where I am happy. I once found out that a hairdresser that I was using never uses ash because she does not like it. I went to her with my color info from a previous hairdresser and she changed the purchase at her supplier because of her own preference. I was so annoyed. Then she did the same to my MIL. Now I found a place to buy the same color that the professionals use and I do it myself. It sounds like you also need a double process and not a single process.

Re: If you know hair color come on in...
Now that you brought up single process this brings me to my next question...I thought I'd be asking for foils and not a single process. Is that wrong?

Bring her the picture -
Any colorist worth their paycheck should know what to do to achieve that - ESPECIALLY someone who has been working w/ your hair for a period of time !!

But I agree w/ you - I unless you really know what you're talking about I wouldn't walk in there and start telling her you want x process w/ y base color and use z to do it - that's telling her how to do her job - My sister would be seriously peeved if a client did that to her .............
It's one thing to say "I'd rather not strip my hair" or "I don't want to use something too damaging" or "let's try something semi - perrmanent" - it's entirely another to say "I want you to make my hair this color and you have to do A B and C to do it ........" KWIM?

You need to lighten the hair and then put color into the hair in order to acheive that look.. you cannot get that from a single process..

I agree with you but when another hairdresser told me to ask for more of an ash tone to the get results I wanted, my hairdresser should have listened and not told me that she "never does ash." What professional hairdresser says that? Even if I want purple, she should do purple!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: If you know hair color come on in...
I"m a hairstylist. the color in the pick is a highlight and a low light. if your hair is picking up gold/red/brassy, you need to put it an ash or a beige base. depending on what color brand your hairdresser uses she might like the beige bases better. i always like the beige base to cut the red/gold. usually if my client still gets that red tone i will do a heavy highlight to lift that color out! hope this helped a little!

Thank you...this really helps! I was getting worried that they were going to dye my entire head and I just really wanted to the foils. Highlights/Lowlights makes perfect sense...I'll mention a ash/beige base

Ehhhh - I don't know. Did she explain to you WHY she didn't want to use 'ash' on you? Just saying "I don't use ash' is ridiculous - and she probably just didn't know how to achieve what you wanted -
but a lot of times my sister gets clients who INSIST she use a certain color and she's annoyed b/c she's TELLING them it's NOT going to work on their hair color, texture, amount of damage - whatever the reason - and they have the attitude like "Well, this is what I want and I'm paying you to do what I want so just shut the hell up and do it " .........the problem is, that they don't LISTEN to the fact that their hair, (or budget) can not handle 'what they want' and they're NOT going to get 'what they want' - and then my sister ends up getting b*tched at ...........KWIM?
A lot of people don't realize that someone like Gwen Stefani for example, has her color done LITERALLY every 5 days to maintain her look, 1/2 of J Lo's hair is extensions, etc etc - So when you bring a stylist a picture and insist "I want this ........." - if they can't do it, or don't think it's best they SHOULD explain to you why - not just say "no I don't do that......."
