If you are feeding on demand, they bring you your baby every time it wakes up to be fed. They brought my DD like 4 or 5 times the first night.

I fed on demand. baby was brought in each time he started to cry. I usually returned him to the nursery around 11:00pm and they brought him in around 2am, 5am and then finally 8am and then he stayed with us.

Re: if you plan on breastfeeding in the hospital...

Most of the hospitals now encourage you to keep the baby with you all night. They only took my baby when I specifically asked them to take him but even if you are bottle feeding they will bring him back when he gets fussy. I tried BF and they would bring him back as soon as he got fussy and then when I switched to formula due to BF issues they would still bring him back if he was fussy.

When I had my son, he stayed in the room with us for the entire duration of my hospital stay. I honestly didn't even know they had a nursery! It was great having him there Chat Icon

Re: if you plan on breastfeeding in the hospital...

I'm having my first baby and plan to breastfeed. The issue of keeping baby with me at night scares me because of security reasons. How do they prevent someone coming in while I am sleeping and taking the baby?

I know I sound paranoid but this has been on my mind alot.

When I had my first son (Jan 2010), they brought him to me every 3 hours to eat. When I had my second son 8 weeks ago, he was able to stay in my room with me. I delivered at Winthrop.

At good sam I know all the babies have alarms on their legs. All the babies have matching id number bracelets with their moms and dads as well.

Same at Huntington Hospital.

With DS they brought him to me every 3 hours, or sooner if he was fussing.

My dd stayed in the room with us all night. On the last night I asked for her to stay in the nursery for two hours.

Re: if you plan on breastfeeding in the hospital...

I kept both kids with me at night - they were with me all the time unless they had to be checked at the nursery, It was easier that way as I BF on demand and of course I was able to look at them ALL the timeChat Icon I will do the same with #3.

Re: if you plan on breastfeeding in the hospital...

I delivered at Plainview Hospital and they actually took my baby to the nursery every night and brought him for as many feedings as I requested.

I got really sick from the Spinal and stayed an extra couple of nights. The last 2 nights I told them it was ok to supplement one of his midnight feedings with formula so I could get some sleep..

I also borrowed one of their electric pumps and pumped milk for his late night feedings. That was the last time I got more than 4 hrs sleep since DS was born!

Re: if you plan on breastfeeding in the hospital...

The first night he went to the nursery and they brought him every 2-3 hours. He had a terrible latching problem so he just cried and cried the whole time we tried. The second night he slept on me the entire night to encourage BFing- but he never woke up to try. He didn't BF at all in the hospital, we had to give him a little formula on the last day and I started pumping. At home I got the nipple shield and all was well with BFing.

Crashing.

Winthrop brought DD to me 3x a night: at 12, 3, and 6. She was with me from 8ish in the morning until late at night anyway.

Getting up and moving around helps you recover from your csection. Take the motrin and you'll absolutely be able to get up to feed them.

I got up the same day and just did what I had to do.For me I just had this mindset that I wanted to be the one to take care of dd and I wasn't going to let anything or anyone stop me. DH stayed over night but I didn't need his help. I had a really easy recovery after the c-sec I was in pain but not so much pain I couldn't lift dd.

The nurse brought DS to me when he needed to be fed at night. If he needed to be changed, the nurse or DH would do that. I was in a lot of pain for the first few days and didn't do much standing or walking other than going to the bathroom and showering.

Re: if you plan on breastfeeding in the hospital...

I had DS at Huntington Hospital and he stayed at the nursery for the first 3 nights. The last night I kept him in the room with me. If I remember correctly the brought him to me once or twice during the night for feeding. They have a feeding schedule at the hospital and all babies are brought for feeding at the same time. I also gave them the okay to give a bottle if he was hungry at the nursery.

ditto! I was up and walking the next day. If the nurse offers you pain killers, take them!

Was it 3 times a night? I guess the early morning feeding I consider that breakfast, not night.

Not only that but the entire maternity ward is in lock down at night. There are no visitors allowed except for DH. In order to get in even during visiting hours you have to buzzed in and the nurses ask who you're seeing and then come to you to let you know you have visitors.
ETA: I had to bring DS back to the nursery one night and I can't even get through the doors. No one is allowed to bring the baby through the front door. The nurse checked my bracelet, confirmed it was matching the baby I had and had to by-pass the alarm.
