Re: If you work full time

I cook every night that DH works which is usually 2-3 weeknights. he works nights right now so he has to eat before he leaves. I usually cook other nights but never on the weekend unless DH is working. We always go out or make plans.

now that the warmer weather is here, we will be outside and running around more, so we may eat out more too.

Every once in a while, I will be really tierd, or forget to take something out, so I will pick up subway sandwiches or boston market for us. But I have really been trying to stick to all organic for us, so picking up quick things doesn't happen often anymore

I cook almost every night.

except lately, b/c I can't deal with the smell of cooking food. so my MIL does.

but under ordinary circumstances, I am in the kitchen cooking dinner most nights...from scratch. no short cuts. and, I usually shop for dinner the day of, since I never know what I want.

we eat late though. anytime from 7:30-9pm, once dh is home from running and what not.

ETA: I usually work out, either at the gym or running, during my lunch hour. or I would run home from work (3 miles) so I am able to incorporate it into my day, rather than take MORE time out of the day, kwim.

I'll be doing this also once the niño/a is born.

I only live a mile away, so I could definitely run home from work. But what do you do with your stuff? I bring a laptop and lunch bag every day so I would have to run with all that stuff.

Re: If you work full time

I try to cook at least 4-5 days a week but it doesn't always work out like that with work the gym, errands. his sports softball basketball there is not much time to prepare meals unless we both bail on our extra activities

check out a sporting goods store. they have these tiny back packs that perhaps you could throw your essentials in (folded lunch bag, keys, wallet etc) I have a small one that I put my wallet, glasses, cell phone and house keys.

I leave my clothes and anything non essential at work. if you CAN leave your lap top overnight, leave it.

I arrange the sched. so that I only run home on days when I can carry light.

Re: If you work full time

I cook at least 3-4 nights a week, with one night being leftovers and one night being brought in. Over the weekend, I usually check the freezer and put stuff together and we might go out for something for one meal over the weekend. If that's the case, it's either something nice or it's a Panera or Cosi (not fast food people here). For me, planning is huge and I have to plan the following week because I try and only shop once (Sundays) and get it all for the week..

PS: I make my own schedule at work so even with one hour of overtime, I am home by 5 - i work out until 6 and then start cooking, DH doesnt come home until about 7:30 and it will get later as the weather gets nicer.

I also use shortcuts for the sides. Meat dishes are made from scratch but sides are usually some kind of boxed pasta/rice or frozen vegetable - we were eating almost NO vegetables until I discovered the steam-in-bag microwavables LOVE THESE!!!

I cook a few times a week, then it is takeout, go out or I use the crockpot. HTH. On nights I am tired, I try to make the meals simple- deli roast beef heated up with gravy in microwave etc.

Re: If you work full time

I cook most days during the work week. DH usually cooks one day. And we often end up getting takeout once in the middle of the week, though we try not to.

And yes, perpetually tired over here Chat Icon

Re: If you work full time

If I wasn't sick, this week would be GREAT since the whole week we are eating leftovers from Easter.

Crockpot users, I have a question:

Most recipes say low for 8 hours, but I work 9 usually and we are away at least 10 hours. Sometimes I find the meat dries out. How do you handle this when you are away for so long? And do you prep (i.e. cut veggies) the night before?

use frozen meat, works for me!! I love the crockpot. Mine also shuts off when the timer is done.

you can also cut the cook time in half and cook on high. so 8 hours low = 4 hours high. I use this most of the time. I run home on my lunch hour and throw it on.

eta: i didn't answer you other questions. I usually cut everything up when i throw it in, not before, but not for a specifc reason, more lazziness

does yours have a timer? b/c when i set it to 8 hours I come home and its always off, it ran out of time. but its so insulated its still hot.

we usually cook about 5 nights a week- i'm anally oganized Chat Icon every sunday we plan out our meals for the week, and shop for the stuff we need to make them.
we also usually plan one "big" dish ( like a pasta or chili or something) that we get 2 meals out of... so i don't end up actually cooking every night, some nights it just heating up leftovers.
friday and saturday ngihts are my breaks, so we always go out... a lot of times we end up going out for lunch on the weekends, too if we're out and about.
we're also lucky with our schedules because i workat a school so i'm home by 4, DH is home by 5 most nights... so we have time to cook.

If i cook once a month, its a lot.

We are lucky that his mother cooks and sends food over 1x-2x a week. If not, we order in A LOT and when he is at the Firehouse i eat cereal or whatever is laying around. We both work long hours and the last thing we feel like doing at 7,8,9pm is turn on an oven:)

I put extra liquid in the crockpot - if i do chicken i put an extra can of the broth in with some add'l water so it doesn't try out.

Nope! We have a small 2-3 person one. If we did have a timer, this would be great! I think this is where I have my crockpot problem...

my husband, aka the princess is so disgusted by any food that is over a day old - he throws stuff out on a daily basis. . .he will throw out any product that is within a WEEK of its SELL BY DATE

It drives me bonkers, I grew up thinking the country was still in the depression, we wrapped up half eaten chicken cutlets and less than an ounce of rice and you were going to eat it tomorrow no matter WHAT - throwing out food? HA!

confession: i still say a little prayer every time he throws out food - it makes me feel so guilty!

I try to cook every other night. Whenever I cook I make extra for the next night. I always cook from scratch. The more involved dishes I cook on Sunday

The opposite night, I bathe both DC's and do laundry.
And, yeah, there are papers to grade after the kids go to bed.

I get up at 4:30 am and I am out the door for work by 5:50am. DH told me the other day he knows how lucky he is because anyone else he knows with that schedule doesn't cook.

Chat Icon Chat Icon I am you and your husband rolled into one.

I grew up poor, so we saved and ate leftovers all the time.

now, I HATE them. and refuse to eat anything more than a day old unless I freeze it right after cooking (and will ONLY do this with sauce) after that, I won't let it pass my lips.

my dh on the other hand, will eat anything that won't kill him and hasn't grown mold. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: If you work full time

i use the crockpot -- but i actually don't like to leave it on when i am not home (silly, i know), so i will make something on sunday.

other thing i do to "help" is to cook say chiciken one night -- but enough that i have it as a meal that night and have enough left over that i can cut it up and toss it into a large salad as a dinner for another night (or for a lunch).

then i buy some easy things i can make on the nights that i am most tired or working the longest -- say pre-made turkey meatballs that i can just add to whole wheat pasta with some olive oil and spices...
