If your child got car sick all the time would you...
try traveling by train...
DS gets carsick all the time and I just hate seeing him suffer like that all the time. He cries and cries until he gets all sweaty and then throws up.
We don't take long car trips. The farthest we drive is to LI. But yet he still gets sick. So I was thinking of trying the LIRR...
What do you ladies think? He's been on the subways and he's done fine.

I would definately try that. Have you tried any of the motion sickness medications? My friends daughter gets car sick a lot so when they go on trips they give her something....not sure what and I am not sure how old they have to be. His daughter is a little older now, but I think they have been using it for a long time now.

Hmmm maybe I should call his ped and ask him about that...
At first I thought it was the winding roads cuz DH takes northern blvd. (route 25A) all the way out there. He has anxiety and can't drive on the parkways. But that's not it because he's thrown up on the parkways too. One time we went out there in my FIL's car and he threw up there as well. So it's the motion sickness definitely.

My boys get car sick. They do better when they have a full belly, but not right before you get in the car.

I don't know if the LIRR would help. It is still the same motion AND there are stops, so there is a lot of slowing down to stoping to speeding up to going fast.
Plus, what if it is crowded and you have to sit backwards, that would be HORRIBLE!!

Re: If your child got car sick all the time would you...
i have motion sickness and can have problems in cars. trains are worse. i always got sick on the trains when i worked in the city if i wasn't sitting, facing forward at all times, and even then that didn't guarantee an ok ride.
as for cars, when i was little and my mom smoked and had vinyl seats i was car sick ALL the time. once she quit smoking the smell went away in the car and i didn't get sick as often.
another thing to help limit motion sickness in cars... make sure they can look out the front window, and not the side windows. seeing things as they come is easier on the eye/ear than seeing them as they are just passing you in the side windows. (it has to do with your brain seeing one thing while the ears say something different)

Are you sure it's actual motion sickness and not him getting upset to the point of vomiting because he is restrained in the carseat?

Do you have a DVD player? My older son gets sick on long car trips, esp if he is reading, doing workbooks or playing his Leapster - anything where he is not looking up. When he watches the DVD, he is fine. I remember from getting seasick, they tell you to look at the horizon and it helps so it makes sense that a DVD player he might have to look up at would help. My DS doesn't get sick on short trips but I have a friend whose DD use to get sick all the time in the car when she was smaller but she's almost 4 now and outgrew it.
