If your infant had allergy testing
I am taking KJ to the allergist next month to get an allergy test...since he has a milk protein allergy and his cousin has pretty severe food allergies, I want to see if and what he is allergic to before I start with alot of table foods. He will be 5 months for the test
how did they test your infant? was it a scratch test or a blood test?
TIA

Re: If your infant had allergy testing
DS was tested very early - just 2 days old - using a RAST (blood test).
He was positive for cats/horse but no foods.

Re: If your infant had allergy testing
Initially a blood test done by the pediatrician, and then when that came back positive for a dairy allergy we decided to see a pediatric allergist. She looked at the blood test results and then did scratch tests for a few things I wanted to rule out and things she wanted to rule out based on his severe eczema.

DS was 1 the first time he was tested. It was a blood test. They don't start skin testing until 3 I believe.

I know my sister's son had a scratch test at less than 1 year old, that is why I was unsure....

Re: If your infant had allergy testing
first it was a rast test.
then at 18 mos, it was a pad of 25 needles, 3 pads. they put a pad into different sections of his back. he just went into shock, but did not really cry

Maybe it's just my ped. They have always been odd about allergy testing.
If you do have the option I thought the skin test was a lot easier on him.

yeah, the poor thing already had blood taken at 2 months (for a fever), I do not want to have to do that again

Re: If your infant had allergy testing
DS was about a year old and we went to a pediatric allergist - she only did a blood test. She said if anything came up positive, she would do other testing.

Re: If your infant had allergy testing
My DS was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy at 3 months via blood in his stool. At 12 months we took him for a food panel blood work-up which showed a slight allergy to milk.
My ped recommended taking him to the allergist to determine if he would be ok to switch off of the Nutramigen to milk, since it was very borderline
The allergist did the skin test and it came up he was "only" lactose intolerant but allergic to EGGS!!! He had the flu shot and eggs but didn't really care for them so I didn't give them to him, but he had other things with eggs in them and I didn't notice a prioblem. Now I have the Epi-pen in case he has a bad reaction to something...
Good luck!

Re: If your infant had allergy testing
DS was eight months when we went for the first time. He had the scratch test but ended up needing a blood test to fully determine his allergy with dairy.

DS just has an allergic reaction to eggs this weekend. We are taking him to the allergist tomorrow. he is 1. He had flu shots, and responded very well, but it seems he is def allergic to eggs. He tends to break out in hives here and there, and has had eczemeya his whole life. We'll see what tomorrow brings!
