If your OOT in-laws visit, do they stay at your home?

MIL is visiting us this weekend (f-sun). We live in a 2 bedroom apt in Manhattan. I want her to get a hotel room but she plans to stay at our apt. I plan to suck it up and be cramped the whole weekend but didn't think this was common. In her situation, it is not a money situation.

Do your in-laws stay at your home when they visit from OOT?

I can already foresee all the criticisms coming. It is going to be a fun weekend.

Personally, I'd do whatever she's comfortable with. If it was for more than a weekend I probably wouldn't want to suck it up and deal and would want her at a hotel.

We have a 2 bedroom now with 3 kids so it's cramped as it is. 3 days i could deal with. More, i think i would need a hotel room.

When we go to visit we stay at their house since they have a 4 bedroom. Usually for a weekend visit they stay with us, and a week long visit at a hotel and the girls stay at the hotel with them for a night so they can spend more time.

I hate having my in laws stay with us and we have a 4-bedroom house - when we had a 2 bedroom apt my parents always stayed at a hotel and my inlaws always stayed with us

we are going to have a problem too if we have a 2nd - becuase then i am getting an au pair -they will only have the couch

good luck - i like my privacy and alone time

my inlaws also always sunday night and that pisses me off becuase sunday night is when i get ready for the week - and need quiet time

I think it depends on your relationship... my IL's live near us but if they lived OOT and were coming to visit they would definitely stay with us. But, I love my IL's and love having them around. My family always stays with us when they visit, never would think of asking anyone to get a hotel and we only have a 2 bedroom townhome!

We stay with them every time we visit them & they stay with us every time that they visit us. My BIL & his dw live in a small apt. now, but I'm curious to see if they still opt to stay with us once they have a house as well lol

Depends on the relationship but I can tell you that there is no way I would put my mom (DH's OOT In-Laws) in a hotel unless my house was way too small and a hotel would be a much better option. Yet, I still think my mom would like to stay with me.

We rarely see each other. I want to spend every minute with her.

DH understands. He does get along with my mom and step-dad so it does make it easy on everybody.

Unless I really could not stand my ILs, I would allow the same if DH's parents were alive and OOT.

They always stay with us-but we hae a 4 bedroom.

When we lived in a small apartment, my BIL stayed with us and FIL, MIL and GMIL stayed in a hotel (we didn't ask them to, they just booked it).

Now, they all stay with us when they come. At Christmas, they all come down plus my mom, and they all stay at our house. Even a 4 BR house gets crowded with 10 people-but we love it!

Yes... they stay with us and we do not have a guest room for them. They stay on the pull-out couch in the living room.

They always offer to stay in a hotel but we tell them not to be ridiculous. Besides, we secretly know my MIL wants to stay with us so she can take DS early in the mornind and let us sleep in.

My BIL, SIL, and 4 neices come to my home every year. Sometimes twice a year.

It is definitely an invasion. DH counted 6 suitcases last visit. In my living room. All week long.
Shoes, earrings, bags for every outfit.
we are in a 3 bedroom townhouse

DH on the other hand, has his hands full with inlaws.

On Christmas, it was my mother, father, brother, his girlfriend, sister, sister, sister, brother....all in our home.

I don't have OOT family, but when my MIL's family friends stayed with us, we had 6 people in a 2 bedroom house.

Personally I could NEVER ask my loved ones to stay in a hotel. JMO though.

Before we had DS, they would mostly stay with SIL in her 2 bedroom condo so they could spend time with their granddaughter.

Now that we have DS, my inlaws split their time between our house and SIL condo. Sure they want to see us, but they really come up to see their grandchildren. (They are pretty darn cute (the kids), so I can't blame them.)

It can be tough. They sleep on an air mattress for a week. They also come to NY at different times, so we only have one of them here at a time.

They would never consider staying at a hotel, and to suggest it would be hurtful to them. They want to be near the grandkids - a hotel would just seem "cold" to them.

Always. But we live in a 4 bedroom townhome- so we have the space.

When DD#1 was baptised, we had a total of 14 people in this house. It was cramped for the weekend, and no one had any privacy. But it was just for a weekend and I was glad I sucked it up for his family because my kids got to spend lots of time with them. Had they stayed at a hotel, it would have taken away time from my kids- and they only see my ILs once a year.

My BIL and his family stay with us all the time. We do however have a good relationship with them, and have the room for them.

Yes, my MIL stays with us. However, given your space limitations, I think it's perfectly reasonable for you to suggest a hotel provided it's close.

i can't stand my monster in laws so they don't stay with us. after what they've pulled, they're lucky i allow them to step foot in my home. thus, they don't stay with us, never will, even if i become rich and have a mansion of a home.

but in your situation, if the space is tight, i would suggest a hotel. i live in a 2bdrm apt and it's just tight. IMO if you're debating it, then you know you shouldn't do it, you just WANT to.

They used to, but there was an argument and they stay with BIL and his wife now.

My dad always stays in a hotel, he prefers his own space.

My inlaws/parents do not live OOT. But my sister, her DH and 3 kids do. They always stay with us when they come for a visit. While it leaves our home a little on the tight side, DS LOVES waking up and having his cousins here.

It is usually just 1 or 2 nights and we all wind up making a big party out of it.

If you are more comfortable with her not being in the house I say make the hotel accommodations and have DH deal with MIL

My IL's live in Manhattan and they still spend the weekend at our house monthly I don't think it's necessary since they don't live far but they insist on the quality time that they get from staying in our home. Let's just say it's not my favorite weekend out of the month. We do have space but I'm sure even if we didn't they would stay with us. I just suck it up.

My IL's actually live on LI but my parents live OOT. Whenever they come to stay, they stay with us. I would not have it any other way. We do have the room though as we have a 4 bedroom house.

my in-laws always stay with us for undetermined amount of time (1-2 weeks)

They did once and haven't ever again,,,I guess I wasn't the most hospitable host lol...I was up bright and early went for a run and afterwards watered my plants outside ...showered, did whatever I usually do as normal, let DH take care of breakfast and the rest, I wasn't going to go out of my way.

Yes...my ILs always stay with us. We have a separate guest room with its own bathroom so they can be comfortable.

My dad never stays with us. He'd rather stay in a hotel. Hey, that's fine by me...

My inlaws stay at our house, we have a very small 3 bedroom house. They have to stay in separate bedrooms, so its a real hassle. Usually my FIL sleeps on a fold out sofa in the computer room and my MIL sleeps in the spare bedroom, but now, we have no spare bedroom, so my FIL is going to sleep on the spare bed in my sons room and my MIL is going to sleep in the computer room.

All in all, I think it would be more comfortable if they stay in a hotel, but I understand that they want to be here when the kids wake up in the morning, my FIL loves his mornings alone with Noah...so for them, I sacrifice.

When my OOT parents come to stay, I expect them to stay in my house, so I can't deny my inlaws the same treatment. Its only a few days out of my life, it won't kill me!

when we were in san diego, we lived in a 2-bedroom apartment and my in-laws always stayed with us when they visited.... same for any family on DH's side really.

my parents (when they came together) preferred to stay at a nearby hotel, same for my brother and his GF. when just my mom came, she'd also stay with us.
