Re: Ikea Kitchen???

I don't have time right now to search, but if you search my name and Ikea you will see my old kitchen come up. I really loved them and they held up great. We were their about 3 years before we sold.

I've been doing a lot of research, and it turns out MANY hi end designers use Ikea cabinets.

some may go the custome DOOR route, but they use the bases. it seems they are very well made and far worth the price.

for a 700k i expect better- whether high end designers use the bases or not- that's a crappy short cut.
for that price, I would expect NO FILLER in my boxes...
which is what you get when you go stock.

people just don't know where to get custom made, affordable cabinets- they go right to HD, lowes or sears.

better than what??

these cabinets have been rated as being really good..and many of them have similar bells and whistles to the things you "expect".

you are a bit different b/c you have REAL knowledge of woodworking and cabinetry...but most people I daresay won't tell the difference.

they'll see nice doors, lazy susans, granite countertops and a nice backsplash and oooh and ahhh and call it a day.

700k doesn't mean the top of the line buyer anymore....especially in this market...

I suppose.
but I find it disappointing...
especially since all these hgtv shows don't use good, quality stuff.
high ratings or not- you aren't going to get a great custom look with stock cabinetry...
i'm not saying they are going to fall apart... but once you start taking up valuable space with fillers- it annoys me.

As an architect working in the hamptons for the past eight years i have to say go with the Ikea cabinets. I can not tell you how many kitchens I see with low in HD cabinets (I know this because I was a kitchen designer for HD for a number of years) and a granite top. It would ignor the crap out of me that someone would use cheap cabinets and throw granite on top.

But you know what, most people couldn't tell that they were cheap cabinets. They just saw the wow factors and paid for that. Some people know right away a custom kitchen from a stock, but speaking from experience most people don't. The homes I helped designed went for millions and sold just find with the cheaper cabinets. Ikea is a great brand and a good contractor will make the cabinets look custom with added moldings, details and custom finishes. To the PP tell you friend to go ahead, she is doing the right thing.

Re: Ikea Kitchen???

We are in the process of planning for our new kitchen and we have ikea on the top of our list. Our IL's just redid their kitchen and went with Kraftmaid and it was a lot of money. Money I don't want to spend for my kitchen. We are gutting the entire kitchen and changing the entire layout and windows and such so that is going to cost me enough. Definately tell them to check out the cabinets for themselves.

Beth/Bxgell2 posted pictures of her Ikea cabinets & I think they look great.

This was in the related threads below:

old ikea thread

And here is Seles's kitchen:

.More Ikea

I would re-do the kitchen if they can do it relatively inexpensively. Chances are, people will rip it out anyway, but if it is decent & newish, it won't scare people away, the way an ancient kitchen will.

Even if people want to rip out a kitchen, it's can be such a big project, that many people would prefer andecent, but maybe not the best or their style kitchen that they can live with untill they are ready to re-do.

Here is the thread from Kara and her kitchen remodel.

If someone tells me it looks cheap, I would be floored.

I spent a small fortune on my kitchen and I wish I had gotten Ikea cabinets instead of custom ones. They now carry THE EXACT SAME ONES that I have. In my next house I am doing Ikea, they are gorgeous!

Re: Ikea Kitchen???

my friend has now redone 2 VERY expensive brooklyn apartments with ikea kitchens

and they are amazing

also- I have looked at plenty of homes in the $700K + range - and I would say not even half a decent kitchens

if we do spend that much money- the house would have to be move in condition, with a pool, on a deep water canal- b/c we wouldn't be able to afford to do much for a while

if she wants her house to stand out- I would do something about the kitchen

depending on where the house is...

Re: Ikea Kitchen???

i have never seen an ikea kitchen but in all honestly, not even sure i would recognize one if i saw it. if the kitchen is well designed and had a lot of nice finishing touches (counters, hardware, sink, faucet, paint and accessories) then i don't think the stock cabinets would stand out as much. again, i am not familiar with their products so i don't know if there is a glaring difference btwn an ikea and a custom designed/made.

the house i bought was not 100% upgraded. the kitchen was but not the baths. the attraction was the style and size of house, the property and the location. i know the market has changed but again location, property and house style is and will always be what attracts buyers.

eta: a ranch house down the street from me (listed in excellent condition) sold in the 700k (i think btwn 720-740k). the house was only on the market for a month. i never viewed the home but do know that NOTHING was upgraded (inside and out). again, the demand and attraction was the location and the property size (flat acre +).

Re: Ikea Kitchen???

We are in the middle of our kitchen remodel now. I considered Ikea cabinets and I think they look really nice - not cheap at all. DH is a very picky when it comes to details, and he did not like the metal sides to the drawer boxes (he wanted all wood cabinet boxes, bases, drawers and doors - no metal, no fiberboard or flakeboard - I think that's what it's called - didn't even want any MDF). So, he automatically ruled out the Ikea cabinets.

Most people don't know what they are looking at when it comes to kitchens - just if it looks good and they like the style. We plan to stay where we are so we decided to go for as high a quality as we could afford. If you are going to sell, I think good quality with style is what people are looking for.

Re: Ikea Kitchen???

I think this thread became a battle about whether or not Ikea makes a quality product. Part of the OP's original question was whether a pretty big kitchen could be done with Ikea cabs for a 15k budget & not look cheap. My answer is still-its not worth it. In order to get a high end look in a large kitchen for 15k some level of quality will have to be sacrificed. To live through a kitchen remodel is a huge PITA, to spend 15k & live through that to possibly get 15k back isn't worth it IMO. Also I think the OP's friend really just hates her outdated kitchen & wants it nice for herself until they sell, not so much as a selling advantange. If that's the case then I think she should go for it.

After talking to her again and reading this thread, I think you are probably right. Truth be told she wants out of her house but isn't sure if this is the right time. I guess I agree that 15K is not that much money in teh scheme of things if it makes her happy for a couple of years and even if it turns out to be a neutral factor in terms of actual resale. I have to admit, I'm curious to see whta the kitchen will acutally look like if she completes this project.
