IKEA kitchens?

How are they?

The apartment we are renting doesn't have a kitchen and we have to buy one (yes, I know this sounds really strange, but the Germans take everything when they move...including the kitchen sink; basically it's just pipes sticking out of the wall).

We need to get cabinets and appliances. We are able to get appliances for a discount, so my question is how are their cabinets? Do they hold up? I like the style, but I'm a bit cautious because it's IKEA.

Thanks!

IKEA kitchens?

I would NEVER in a million years pay for this myself... NEVER EVER EVER!!! Unless they want you to lay out the $$ and you can just not pay rent for a year or so.

ETA : Ikea is actually pretty decent, especially when you consider this isn't something you are going to get any sort of return on investment.

Re: IKEA kitchens?

We looked into getting them and were there many times during out research - in the end, because of the unique sizes we would've needed that they didn't carry, it wouldn't have worked out properly.

However, I know a few people with IKEA kitchens and the have no complaints! My cousin's kitchen is all IKEA, she has two kids (7 and 5) and loves to cook...the kitchen gets a lot of action in that house and it's in great shape.

Re: IKEA kitchens?

A lot of people on LIF seem to like their IKEA kitchens. Would you be taking the cabinets with you when you leave this rental? Better cabinets may hold up to repeated installs and uninstalls.

It seems so weird, as an American, to hear that people take their kitchens with them in Germany! What if their next place has a totally different layout?

It's completely normal here. When you move out, you take the kitchen with you. The apartment we are in now came with a kitchen, but they are few and far between. We had more time to look then as well. Now we are moving to a city three hours away (Munich) and the city is known for not having enough apartments. We would limit ourselves if we searched for only a built-in kitchen.

I know it sounds completely crazy, but that's how it is done here. You also don't get lights, just wires hanging from the ceiling. You are lucky if you get your security deposit back as well. Right now our current landlord is trying to make us paint and replace the wooden floors or we won't get our 3,000 Euro deposit back. We have a renters' association here that will help us with those problems.

This stuff is completely normal here. I just have to accept it. If you have anymore questions on oddities of moving and renting in Germany ask away!

Anyway back on topic...

So you are actually IN Germany... gotcha.

Glad I don't live there! I've known people that lived in other European countries and I don't remember them having issues like this, but none lived in Germany. I guess when you're moving from one apt to another that doesn't have a kitchen it makes sense to take the kitchen with you - just like when you take your furniture!

I've seen this on House Hunters International. So bizarre.
I mean what are the chances you find the same kitchen lay out when you move with the old cabinets.

They come with. Don't even get me started on when we move out of our future apartment Chat Icon. What a lot of people do is try to sell their kitchen to the next renter. But if that renter already has a kitchen, then they won't want it. It's one of the stupidest things I've heard living here.

Re: IKEA kitchens?

For what you want and need I would def do IKEA. IKEA was made to be a portable kitchen.

They have feet on the bottom of the cabinets rather than a toe kick (unless you install the toe kick)

IKEA will probably be the cheapest for you.

IKEA kitchens?

Ikea kitchens are actually pretty good. we put one into our old house. Pretty easy to build and install, sturdy, and the drawers are fantastic.

the only complaint we had was on the door style we picked, it was a raised panel white door, the paint was thin in spots, and we had some come with paint imperfections. we exchanged them, and got to a spot where we were happy, but overall, I'd probably pick a different door style that was wood to be sturdier.

good luck

We have them, they are going on 8 years old now and are in as good a shape as they day we put them in. Love them and not a single complaint, once, ever.

The money isn't really an issue. It's the fact that IKEA is the fastest. Most places we have looked at take at least 8 weeks. IKEA can do it faster.

I love my Ikea kitchen. I can't speak to durability because it's new but the cabinets look great and clean really nicely. They were also easy to put together.

Re: IKEA kitchens?

When we bought our house we redid the whole kitchen with IKEA cabinets. It was dirt cheap and a breeze for DH to put together. I will say they are atrocious some 11 years 1 dog and 3 kids later. The cabinets are all peeling/discolored. We planned on being in the house 5 years tops, lol.

IKEA kitchens?

Thanks everyone!

I had a look this weekend at IKEA kitchens. I really like the butcher block counter tops, so we are 99% sure on that. I also think we are going to go with framework of the kitchen if that makes any sense. I didn't care much for the fronts of the cabinets, but I wasn't looking very closely.

I also read you can use different cabinets fronts with IKEA furniture as it is pretty interchangeable. Has anyone done this?

I know you are out of the country so I'm not sure if they ship internationally but there is this company that makes custom doors and drawers for Ikea kitchen cabinet frames and it looks awesome. They are called semihandmadedoors.com. Check out their work on Pinterest, that's how I found out about them.
