Honestly...I don't know what a GOOD deal is! We know we want a good size one to fit above the FP.

Great, my pic won't post. Chat Icon

We have a Sony Bravia 42". I think we would have gotten bigger, but we had to fit it in the cubby where the cable connection is.

We have a Sharp Acquos and are very happy with it. DH did a ton of research before buying and comparison shopped at many stores. He found the best deal at Tigerdirect.com and had me order it - needless to say I bought the wrong one but, we love it anyway.

Samsung, Pioneer and Sony also have very good televisions.

I suggest you measure the width of the fireplace and find a television width that will look good above it.

You can buy some painters mask (the blue tape) and put the dimensions of the TV up on the space so see what it would look like.

The most important thing in my opinion is refresh rate. You want something with a refresh rate of 4ms or less and 1080P resolution.

I wouldn't recommend buying a television from tigerdirect.com.

There are better deals to be had elsewhere, and the customer service at tigerdirect is very suspect.

If you are ordering online, I would stick to Frys.com, Amazon.com (they charge tax in NY now), Vanns.com, or OneCall.com. Or you can just buy locally.

Re: I'm a little overwhelmed with flat-screen TV buying/choosing!!!!

If you want plasma and are on a budget I would go with this.

Panasonic 50" Plasma - $1099

I actually just bought the Samsung version of this TV for the same price. Was delivered today in fact! Hanging it on the wall in my bedroom. Chat Icon

This would be a great TV if you don't want to unload a ton of cash. Cable TV and Blu-Ray would look great on it.

Plasma you can get great deals on... we love ours. We have a 42" Panasonic plasma, the picture is amazing.

We have a 32" Westinghouse LCD that we've had for a few years that we like too.

Both were under $1,000.

It's a big, two-story room so I am thinking we may be good with a 52" but I would have to see prices.

Okay....maybe a little less than that. Chat Icon Do you think 52" would overpower?

We have two Panasonics, a 50" plasma and a 32" LCD and love both of them. It boils down to your personal preference, what picture looks good to you and of course fits your budget.

I have a very basic rule for this. If you are on the fence as to what size you will need, always buy BIGGER than what you think you will need.

Every time I bought an HDTV I always bought the next size up from what I felt I would need and I have never regretted my decision.

The way I see it, it would totally suck if I bought a TV and I felt that I should have went larger and be regretting my purchase for years.

If you go larger you will never say "wow that TV is too big" because your eyes will quickly adjust and you will learn to love the larger size.

A TV purchase can be a very long term investment. I bought my first 50" plasma FIVE years ago. At the time I could have gotten away with a 46" or maybe even a 42", but I went with 50. I am glad I went with 50 at the time because that TV is still considered massive by today's standards and it has prevented me from having to upgrade that TV.

I should be able to continue using that TV for at least another 5 more years because I won't have to upgrade it for size because I bought a nice big size at the time.

It's one thing if the budget doesn't allow for a bigger TV. But if you have the cash, I say go with the 52". You won't regret it. Chat Icon

Plus with the links above, I think the 52" is only marginally more expensive than the 46".
