I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
I just had my son, Jack Oliver on 11-5-11, xpost from pregnancy board.
Although I am no longer living on Long Island. Literally, 2-3 weeks ago we moved to Ohio due to DH's job transfer. We love it so far, but my heart is on LI (just not for monitary reasons).
I was just curious to the mom's that do breastfeeding - how long did it take for your milk to come in? Today is 11-8-11, and I tried to pump 3-4 times a day, and I am not getting anything. He can latch onto me no problem, but I what good is it if nothing's coming out right? Trying not to get discouraged and I know it's not a terrible thing to stick to formula, but I was wondering if there are other moms out there who took a while to produce.
Thanks :)

Congrats!!
I think my milk came in on the 4th day. He should be getting colostrum. Have you seen that? (Kind of sticky and yellow-ish?) Are you currently supplementing with formula? Keep putting him to your breast because that is going to help stimulate the production and build a supply, better than the pump will.

Re: I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
Congratulations and welcome to the parenting board
my milk came in at day 3 but it matched my son's apetite which at that point was small
I remember reading that their stomach is the size of a marble at day 1 and it increases slowly- so you are probably getting enough milk for the baby
I didnt start pumping until 2 weeks though so I am not too sure how that works- hopefully one of the other ladies can help with that

Re: I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
I gave birth on 9/24 milk came in day 6 9/30. Don't get discouraged. I didn't even pump till the milk came in and I got super engorged.
What I did was nurse in the hospital and at home every 2 hours from 6-8 in the morning till about 10pm. I believe that helped my milk come in.
Once it did, I switched to every three hours. I never woke him up to eat overnight. Since coming home, he woke up only once overnight and now sleeps 8 hour stretches.
What you pump is not what your baby gets from the breast. They get much more. As long as he has wet diapers and isnt crying of hunger after the nursing session, Im sure he's getting the colostrum right now!
Again, Im a very new mom with only a 6week old so please take other opinions as well

Re: I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
My milk came in on day 4.
If your DS is latching on, STEP AWAY FROM THE PUMP. 3 or 4 times a day? Why? He's getting what he needs from you. And your breasts are getting the stimulation they need from him. You should be nursing every 2-3 hours, for 20 minutes or so at a time - how do you even have time to pump?
Feed him when he's hungry, and worry about pumping in 2 weeks or so when you're ready to leave the house and need someone to feed him a bottle. Now go enjoy your beautiful new baby!

Re: I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
do not think that the pump is any indication of what your lo is getting...the baby is more efficient! Also your baby's stomach is about the size of a golf ball...so dont think that you need to have oz and oz in the beginning..
My milk didn't come in til about day 6 or 7...but the Colostrum is more than enough that I never felt I had to supplement!
The more you put the baby to the breast, the more you will make...it is like supply and demand...the baby should be latching every 2-3 hrs around the clock for the first 6-8 weeks....
I am sure your milk will be in any day...
good luck and congrats of your new lo

Re: I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
my milk took awhile to come in i think day 7 i had a c section as well i supplemented some feedings with formula when i was exhausted and ds was clearly hugry ... ds was 10 lbs and if it was up to him he would be on boob for 24 hours. just keep trying all the time and it will come in and try not to worry about pumping at all right now

Re: I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
Congrats and good luck on your new home!
Keep putting him to your breast as much as possible. And DON'T get discouraged by what you see come out with the pump! The pump is much less efficient than DS. I EBF for 5 months so far and still hardly get anything when I pump, but DD gets plenty when she eats!
People kept telling me I'd know when my milk came in, but I didn't feel a huge difference until a week later. But when I squeezed what came out looked more like milk and less like colustrum.
Just remember, the more he nurses the better your supply will be so let him suck away even if you don't think hes getting anything. It will signal your body to start producing. Also, I believe you can not overfeed a bf baby, so let him nurse whenever he wants. It feels non stop in the beginning but he will eventually get into a routine.
Come back with ANY questions! This board helped me so much in the beginning!

Re: I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
Yeah I dunno, maybe the lactation consultants are a little backwards here, because they told me to pump pump pump and also latch him, but last night and a few times today I had him at my breast for about maybe 10-15 minutes...he kinda started pushing away from me and getting fussy but he's less fussy each time I do it.
thanks so much ladies. :)

the lc's in the hospital told me the same thing about the pump. theres just not enough time in the day lol. ped said nurse or pump not both meaning pump if i skip a nursing session - i go with that advice (ped is also a lc)

Re: I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
Everyone I dealt with in the hospital gave me misinformation about BF. I would only pump if you miss a feeding or feel super engorged.
If you are giving formula I would only give it after DS nurses for awhile and he still looks hungry, and then stop when ur milk does come in.

ITA with everything the PP mentioned. Keep putting your DS to the breast. He is MUCH more efficient than any pump can be. Also, lots of skin to skin contact! Colostrum is very high in protein and carbs and extremely concentrated so a little goes a long way in filling your DS.
It took me about 7-8 days before my milk came in. I would advise against supplementing with formula at this point so that it doesn't affect your milk supply.
I EBF until DS self weaned at 16.5 months so feel free to FM me with any questions! Another great resource for breast feeding moms is Kellymom.com. Good luck and congrats on the birth of your LO!!!

Re: I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
I also agree with others to only pump if you miss a feeding! Dont make yourself crazy pumping so early on..you are probably better off letting your LO feed off of you every hour than pump in between feedings! You will quickly get discouraged!
Good luck! And please feel free to ask any questions! It is def not easy in the beginning...but I promise it does get easier as your lo gets into a routine!

Re: I'm a New Mommy!! :) With a questions re: breastfeeding.
Congrats!!! My milk came in 4 days after my c/s. It was rough. DS was screaming his head off and actually lost his voice in the first day or two. But I didn't give in to FF and he was just fine. Many nurses and his ped reminded me that he can go up to a week with NOTHING. Hang in there and don't worry about pumping right now. Just keep latching on every 2 hrs. or on demand.

Day 3 or 4. Tomorrow you should be good. Also, you get a lot more milk pumping first thing in the morning. I got very little in the evening.

Congrats!!
BF is so hard in the beginning, but after a few weeks it's so easy.
It can definitely take a few days for your milk to come in, but you should be producing colostrum, which is all our DS needs in the beginning.
The more often you put him on, the more milk you will produce.
Good luck!!
