Re: I'm bored, so...tell me, what was something you always believed as a child that isn't really true?
I have a few of my own
How about if you step on the crack's of a sidewalk you would break your mother's back, I reallt thought that was true!
my mom used to give clothes to little flower, and one day i was acting up and mom used to say if i did not behave she was going to call them on me.... Well one day they called for a pick up and she said to me that's it they are coming to get me.... I was so than i apologized to her and told her i'm sorry i'll be have call them back, and she said they were not coming for me they were picking clothes up.
I believed there were ghost and witches hiding in my closet and at night they were going to come and get me and put me in a black kettle.
that if you crossed your eyes they would stay that way.
That my mom had eyes in the back of her head.
that mom was a mind reader, because knew knew what i was doing when i was not in the same room as her.

I grew up in Valley Stream. Under the Valley Stream LIRR station is a BIG bump/hill. When we were little, my mom told us there was a dinosaur under there and it was too big to move, so they put the road right over it.
We were also told that your tongue turns black when you lie, so whenever my parents asked us if we'd done something, they'd say, "Stick out yer tongue." I TOTALLY believed that one (and my sister now uses it on my nephew!).

I believed that the world was black & white until the early 1960's because my Dad said so!!! Looking at pictures once as kid with him, I commmented how there were no color pictures until he was maybe 10 years old. So he said because there WAS no color until he was 10 years old!!!

I believed from the age of 7 until I was in my 20's(my brother did too) that my parents took our dog to a big farm because he loved to run and needed more space. Well, my Grandma let the cat out of the bag 15-20 years later that my parents had the dog put to sleep and we were honestly shocked and mad. DUH!

I totally thought this too because of b&w movies. I thought about how sad it was.

I remember when something fell on the floor and my mom would say kiss it up to god and I would kiss it and hold it up real high and it would be ok.. I couldn't figure our why they didn't take sick people in helicopters and kiss them up to god to make them better.

1) That when a mouse gets caught in one of those old fashioned mouse traps like on the cartoons, that it just snaps down on their tails... Only a few years ago, I found out that it breaks their necks..
2) That if I cracked my knuckles then I would get big, ugly, arthritic fingers and that no boy would want to hold my hands. (Thanks Ma)
3) That if your hair is very thin, you can't wear it long- you have to get the "Dorothy Hamil" cut. (Thanks again Ma..At 3 1/2 years old, my DD has still never had a hair cut!)

- If I ate the crusts of my bread, my hair would turn curly
- That my parents really DID get my little brother at the supermarket. They said they found him in a sack of potatoes. I believed this one until I was about 8

In elementary school we were making our family trees. THe teacher asked me what my grandfather on my mother's side's name was. I replied Opa Deutschland. She told me she didn't think that was correct. I was certain it was. It turns out that that is translated to Grandpa Germany. My mom always refered to him as Opa Deutschland because we had another Opa right here in NY. oops
When my dad drove the car and put the windshield wipers on (on the delay mode) he told me that the would wipe after 100 rain drops hit the windshield! I couldn't believe the car was that smart.

Ok, I just thought of another one, my mom told me when I was 10 that if I shaved the hair above my knee it would make the rest of my hair grow in thick like my dad's on the rest of leg when I turned 40 It was years later that she told me that she thought for years that only "loose" women shaved above the knee and that's why she lied But I believed her for the longest time

Re: I'm bored, so...tell me, what was something you always believed as a child that isn't really true?
My mom was evil and used to screw with me...
So here is what I believed.....
That bats liked to lay nests in your hair. Especially if you had curly hair. We had a house upstate and I was afraid to go outside at night forever because I had curly hair.
That earwigs really would crawl into your ear and live there
That my mom had a phone number for the bad girls school and they would come pick me up and take me away.
She also had the phone number for santa and would threaten to call him if I was bad.
Oh and the worst.... Some kids on the bus were talking about BJ's and I asked my mom what that was and she told me it has something to do with baseball. SO I went back on the bus and told everyone that I know what BJ's are and they have something to do with baseball...
I also believed that clowns lived the in the sewer and blood could come out the sink. Some idiot camp counselers showed us "It" when i was like 9 and I was scared for years.. No joke.. My mom was sooo ****** at that camp.. They got tons of phone calls from the parents

I thought that when my mom said "fill it up" at the gas station she was saying "Phillip". I didn't understand how (1) she knew the name of every gas station attendent and (2) they were ALL named Phillip.
