Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.
I don't think breast feeding in public has anything to do with women's rights. There's two ways to do it: the classy way and the trashy way. I fully intend to breast feed my unborn child. But I don't think the world wants to see my ginormous breast hanging out. I don't act like that now, why would I do it while feeding my baby??
She could have covered up a little.
I fully understand that the child was hungry. But really, a little class.

I never realized that a way in which a woman chooses to breastfeed could possibly qualify as "trashy". A woman wearing low risers with her arse hanging out - trashy? Yes. A woman half-concealing her boob to feed her squirmy child? No way.
I've breastfed, and I'll tell you, most babies squirm and move around, and there's no delicate or easy way to cover your boob if your child is of the "spirited" type.
Even still, how in the world are those pictures "trashy"?? She is wearing a shirt and covered with a jacket, and the baby's head is covering the boob.

As I said on the other thread, I really don't see how she could be more covered up AND still breast feed. Her boob was not completely exposed - she still has her jacket on, and from the looks of it, her breast is completely covered by the jacket from the other side. Any more covered up and her child would be suffocating! It's not like she's feeding a newborn whose easier to control.
Seriously!
It's sad that people get their panties in a bunch when they see a woman breastfeeding yet find it "sexy" when they see the same objectified breast smeared across men's magazines.
I think it's sad that there is this constant judgment towards mothers - it seems they can never be perfect enough for our society.

Who ever said that the people who don't agree with BFing find that sexy? Did I say that? No, I didn't. I also didn't say that I find a lot of what's being put in my mouth to be sexy.....
I also didn't say that I find the violence on tv and in movies to be acceptable. I actually think that it's pretty disgusting that it's allowed to be viewed by our children.
And I do see and agree with some very good points brought by some who don't agree with me. They were not confrontational and they worded their statements with thought, not just slinging harsh criticism at those who don't see eye to eye. Those people have my respect because they can have a civilized discussion without tearing people down.
I have officially signed off of this topic and find it ridiculous that it was moved to CG, it has nothing to do with it.

All's I said was be prepared. The boob comes out A LOT in mommy circles.
Yeah, but isn't it one thing if you're in a group with mom's who all can relate to what you're doing than to be sitting at a bistro on the sidewalk of NYC for all of the world to see?
I'm not a mom yet and I haven't given much thought to whether or not I will BF... with that said, if Maggie Gyllenhal is comfortable with her body and the way she chooses to feed her child than so be it, BF on the streets of NYC buck naked if you please, I personally wouldn't be comfortable doing that myself and I wouldn't be comfortable sitting around with you while you do that... no judgement, honestly.
But for all of your moms who have BF or are currently BFing, if you have to do it in a public place (b/c lets be honest, a baby is hungry when it's hungry no matter how inconvenient) aren't you going to try and cover yourself with a receiveing blanket or something just to avoid the disgusting stares you get from others??

Just because you are with other mom's doesn't mean they are the only ones that can see you. For instance, play dates in the park. The particular sentanced you quoted was a defense from a prior, more detailed, post.

I can't control how others are going to act. If people stare and are disgusted, that is THEIR issue, not mine or my childs. I have a physical deformaty and get stares from that, should I cover that too so that others can feel better and not be disgusted?

I realize that, but in your first post you mentioned a lot of place that only moms and their kids would be... parks are different, but also, majority mommys... to each their own. I say, if you don't want to see it, don't look... that's why I don't go to scary movies, I don't want to see it!

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.
I think it's great that she's not shy about breastfeeding her baby. Personally, I'm a really modest person and could probably never be so open about it.
I do have an honest question though since I don't have a baby and none of my friends do. Can't BF'ing moms carry the milk in a bottle as well? Is it a choice between BF in public or not BF'ing at all? Or is it just that it's inconvenient/annoying to have to pump the milk and then carry it around?
DH and I aren't thinking about kids for another couple of years and I know there's the whole formula v. BF debate. But since we're on the topic, and as someone who could never whip out my girls in public, I'm just curious if a bottle is an option?

I find it so, so, so incredibly sad that women are so judgmental of one another, and here, with regard to something that deserves no judgment whatsoever.
When it comes to mothering, parenting choices and raising a child, women should be one another's biggest proponent, no matter whom you are - a friend, a sister-in-law, an aunt, a stranger. We ALL have boobs, and the primary purpose, whether you like it or not, whether you ACCEPT it or not, is to feed your child. But, because of the conservative ways of this country, that purpose has been twisted, morphed and manipulated to the point where now, it is more acceptable to see half-naked women on the street, in restaurants, on TV, than to see a half-exposed boob while a woman is feeding her child.
It is simply incredulous to me what this Country deems acceptable (i.e. violence on TV during primetime hours that children are watching) and not acceptable (a mother's boob half exposed while breastfeeding).
Am I coming off judgmental? Am I mudslinging? Perhaps, and you know what, I don't care. I don't care if I offend anyone here, because it's time that we GET offended, start evaluating our opinions a little more deeply, and perhaps start to change people's persepctive on something that is so beautiful, natural and wonderful, and that should be whole-heartedly celebrated no matter where and how it takes place.
STANDING OVATION
and for the record I currently have a baby on my boob as I type

I wouldn't as far as saying it's trashy or classless.
She wasn't stripped to the waist, smoking a cigarette and stroking her other nipple.
She was breast feeding.
But seriously for all those that think she should have covered up a little, she was wearing a jacket the paparazzi probably just caught her at a bad angle. Maybe she usually brings a blanket it with her but forgot that day.

For some it's an option, for others it isn't, and even for those that it is, it's an inconvenience.
Some babies will not use the bottle, and refuse to make the transition from boob to bottle, so for those mothers, pumping is not an option.
For babies that do, it's still an inconvenience. You can sit for 20 minutes and get only 1-2 ounces, which is annoying, boring and quite simply, pumping hurts, moreso than BFing. Also, keep in mind, breastmilk, when pumped, only stays good for about an hour, so if your hour is up, and baby is hungry, there's really no other option.

Look, the reality is seeing a woman blatently breast feed makes people feel uncomfortable. Regardless of people saying that they shouldn't feel uncomfortable, they do. If you don't care if you make others feel uncomfortable, then do what you want.

just repeating what i posted on another thread...
i think most people just think that their opinions count more than they really do.
for example- the person who says, "other people feel uncomfortable with that" translates into *I* feel uncomfortable with that... which translates into "Other people should modify their actions based on MY opinions" translates into... get over yourself!

I just looked at the picture, I really hope this is the new trend. Coverups, hiding, pumping? for what? feeding your baby?
Do people really think that Breastfeeders want their boobs out? In the middle of her meal, did she want her baby tugging on her nipple?
If anyone looks at that picture with anything other then a thought of, wow, what a dedicated mom...the problem is your's, not her's.
