I think that I was WAY more shocked and offended by seeing her masturbate repeatedly with a sharpie (or whatever) in The Secretary...
Once you start hanging out with mommies, a boobie is a boobie.

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.
I have addressed this a million times over - but I will say my piece once more.
1. I breastfed anytime my child was hungry. I didn't care if it was at home, in a restaurant or at a park full of kids. I did my best to be 'discreet' - because I am modest and because I really didn't want to hear anyone get worked up over it.
2. I have seen WAAAAY more exposure by women on the beach. I am astounded that the sexualization of breasts is A-OK, but breastfeeding is still 'shocking' to some people.
3. I was once asked to leave a hair salon where I was waiting for my friend becuase I was breastfeeding (VERY discreetly). You could see none of my breast, and the back of my son's head. The woman rationalized that it was a 'family business'. WHAT could POSSIBLY be more familial than a woman feeding her child? Oh... I know! The shampoo girl who was wearing shorts up the crack of her *** and a men's button down that was unbuttoned enough to expose her belly ring.
Exposing a breast to feed your child is in NO WAY vulgar. I totally understand that people have different comfort levels and different tolerances for seeing the human body. Look away if it makes you uncomfortable. It's as simple as that.

OK--the person in the wrong is the paparazzo who took her pic and sold it to a tabloid!!! Her baby was hungry, she fed him. That's it. Could she have covered up her breast a bit more? I don't know; I don't know a thing about feeding...but it's still her business.

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.
It's really funny and a bit ironic that the BF proponents are resorting to name calling and insults when a person expresses a differing opinion on the subject.
Never once did I say that she shouldn't be nursing in public, NOT ONCE.
What I DID say is that she should be more discreet. The whole world doesn't need or want to see a woman nursing, no matter how natural it is.
I respect the fact the many nursing moms are HUGE proponents of the whole thing and some even push their boundaries when it comes to persuading others to do it, but you will NEVER see me call someone out because they have a different view than me.
I would surely think that moms would understand differing points of view in an adult conversation and not resort to mud slinging.
And it's the close(d) minded, silly, childish people who surely wouldn't understand a little debate when they see one. And what does the fact that I am pregnant have to dowith anything? My opinion is still my opinion regardless and Iwill deal with that in my own way.

Are you kidding me? Not for nothing, but what's wrong with nursing in a restaurant? If you can eat there, why can't your baby? I will not even go any further with this because it's an old debate that will never die.
because I dont want to see your boob while I eat my salad.
eta; if you want to be discreet about it, thats one thing. But completely exposed is another.

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.
As I said on the other thread, I really don't see how she could be more covered up AND still breast feed. Her boob was not completely exposed - she still has her jacket on, and from the looks of it, her breast is completely covered by the jacket from the other side. Any more covered up and her child would be suffocating! It's not like she's feeding a newborn whose easier to control.

It's a shame that society does have such a negative attitude against bf and I realize it's certainly not going to change overnight. So while you are entitled to your own opinion and I'll respect that the next time you see us nursing moms feeding our children in public and look in disgust just deal with it because we're not going away.

All's I said was be prepared. The boob comes out A LOT in mommy circles. If you want to sit and say that you expect adults to see a debate for a debate and not mud sling. Well I say to you, as an ADULT, why not try and be a little more open minded. You are about to go thru a MAJOR life change, be open to the fact that perhaps your point of view MAY change. I never thought my point of view would change on a lot of things but in the last year, having a child...well like the commercial does say "having a baby changes everything."

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.
I find it so, so, so incredibly sad that women are so judgmental of one another, and here, with regard to something that deserves no judgment whatsoever.
When it comes to mothering, parenting choices and raising a child, women should be one another's biggest proponent, no matter whom you are - a friend, a sister-in-law, an aunt, a stranger. We ALL have boobs, and the primary purpose, whether you like it or not, whether you ACCEPT it or not, is to feed your child. But, because of the conservative ways of this country, that purpose has been twisted, morphed and manipulated to the point where now, it is more acceptable to see half-naked women on the street, in restaurants, on TV, than to see a half-exposed boob while a woman is feeding her child.
It is simply incredulous to me what this Country deems acceptable (i.e. violence on TV during primetime hours that children are watching) and not acceptable (a mother's boob half exposed while breastfeeding).
Am I coming off judgmental? Am I mudslinging? Perhaps, and you know what, I don't care. I don't care if I offend anyone here, because it's time that we GET offended, start evaluating our opinions a little more deeply, and perhaps start to change people's persepctive on something that is so beautiful, natural and wonderful, and that should be whole-heartedly celebrated no matter where and how it takes place.

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.
I don't have a child nor am I pregnant and I see nothing at all wrong with breastfeeding wherever and whenever. It's a natural thing and I really don't understand how people get offended by it. As a woman, you know what a boob looks like and what it's there for, why be offended. As a man, there is nothing sexual about a woman breastfeeding so you rarely see a man gawk at a woman BFing.
People of the US as a collective are very backwards in their thinking of the human body. We are opposed to the wrong things - BFing, beach nudity, etc. and attracted to the wrong things - violence, sexualization of women, etc.
JMHO....

True...except she brought the debate over here for that reason. So people can express their opinions.
Personally, I always think debates like this are pointless. Noone ever gets someone else to change their mind. I have never seen someone post or say - WOW, that was an excellent point, I never thought of that before and I have definitely changed my views on this.

Maybe the baby doesn't care to see you eating salad while he's on the boob. But you both have a right to be there and to eat.

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.
I was not breastfed, my son was not breastfed and I dont plan on bf any other children we may have, for ME it just wasnt my "thing". Having said that I have seen many women bf in public, covered or not. I saw it as a woman feeding her child. Didnt offend me in the least.
What does offend me is seeing these little prostitots wearing super ultra low riders with the crack of their butts hanging out and shirts so low I can see their belly buttons. But thats ok in this society. I'd rather my daughter (when I have one) see a mom feeding her baby, using her breast for what its for than to see some little hoochie flashing her ta ta's for some springer beads.
As for Maggie Gyllenhall, I've seen more boobage than that at the beach.

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.
It doesn't bother me at all and I think there is no need for her to cover up. If she feels comfortable, then good for her!
I am more offended by "miscelaneous tatas", meaning girls that wear practically NOTHING. If you're not feeding your baby with them, I don't want to see them. Why doesn't anyone criticize them?
When JLo wears a see through dress, she looks hot. When Little Kim wears little pasties to an award show, she is making a statement. I dont' understand why, NOW all of a sudden, people should cover up when they are feeding their child.
Where are the priorities of people?

Re: I'm bringin' it here!!! The Maggie Gyllenhall breastfeeding debate.
She proly was discreet! Her jacket fell to the side, just like anyone’s jacket, shirt, blanket could while breastfeeding, except they don't have the photogs waiting to capture it. I’m not a Maggie fan but I think she’s just enjoying being a mom here and people need to move on if they don’t want to see her boob (*gasp* at the shock- a boob!) in any capacity.
Even if she wasn't trying to stay covered as women we should be more supportive of her. Men wouldn't be nearly as catty about some guy caught in a pic scratching his balls or with a hard-on or something that they should be 'more discreet' about. We wonder why we have so many threads on LIF about friends who aren't acting like friends, best friends who are catty to each other...women are not good about supporting each other.
I love the fact she is breastfeeding and nurturing her baby unlike so many celebs who toss their kids to nanny's 24/7.
