I'm losing my mind with camp
my son is 4.5. We're on day 4 of camp and the 3rd morning in a row he is kicking and screaming he doesn't want to go. yesterday I drove him in and spoke with the director and his counselor and they said he's fine once he's there and even agrees to go in the pool. in the morning he's crying he doesnt want to go in the pool.
today he had such a meltdown about going again. 2 hours of screaming and crying. "i hate camp" "i don't want to go to camp" "i hate the pool". i kept assuring him he doesnt have to go in the pool but camp rules he has to at least wear a bathing suit.
i made sure no one was bothering him or being mean. he said he likes all the other activities and the boys in his group. he said he wants to play in the big pool but they make him do instruction and he doesnt want to do that. they told him if he wants to play he can go in the baby pool but he doesnt want to because his friends are in the big pool.
i hate forcing him to go but he HAS to! i work from home..i have no options. this morning i couldn't even get him out the door. he's home. i told him if he stays home today he has to stay in his room all day and no tv or skylanders until he goes back to camp on monday. OR he goes to camp and has fun. he chose to stay home!
i feel so powerless that i can't get him to go! but also i feel horrible that i'm forcing him. anyone going through this!?!?

Could it be related to the fact that you just got married and this is a power struggle related to that?

Hmmmm......good point. Does he ever get like this when you leave him? Maybe he's going through a bit of separation anxiety since you were away on your honeymoon.
DS can get crazy after he's had a break from school.
I think our sons are around the same age too.
It used to upset me so much that I would sweat insanely and sit in my car in tears. The teachers constantly had to reassure me it was an act and he calmed down as soon as I was gone.
At times, he's done it at my ILs after a break home with me.

Can he go with another group when they are in the pool? It seems like the pool is the issue!

Is the pool cold in the morning? My DS hated swim lessons at camp when he was young because they sat in the cold pool waiting their turn. He was much happier in the big pool playing.

after i wrote this and calmed down i thought the same thing! i asked him if he'd go to camp if i went too and he said yes! so there was my answer. i still punished him for 2 days with no tv or skylanders. he felt that.
i took him to my sister's pool on friday and put him in a life vest. he was terrified at first but i did tough love and pulled my hands away so he could see he wouldn't go under. he did an immediate 180 and LOVES going in the pool, but with the life vest. i'm going to bring him there again today.
i spoke with the director of the camp and we agreed on a plan. at this point we don't care if hes in the pool, but he has to go to camp! so today and tomorrow he has to go to camp, but he'll leave his swim bag at home. wednesday and thursday he has to bring his swim bag but he still doesn't have to go in the pool. and friday he has to wear his bathing suit to camp but still doesnt have to go in the pool.
today he gave me a little issue. i told him no more tv in the morning. i think that gets him comfortable. so he got dressed, we ate breakfast and then we sat on the porch until the bus came. and he went!
i hope it gets better and this was just because he missed me. i made sure to give him lots of attention this weekend and assured him that i will be here when he gets off the bus.

Good luck!
My son is a little younger than yours (will be 5 in December) and he's been weird about the pool this summer as well. I'm not sure what the deal is, he was doing really well with swimming lessons and then fell into a pool at a friend's pool party... The pool he took lessons in is really warm so I think that's part of it (pool is too cold for him) and now he has some fear that he didn't once have.
Change is also really tough on him.
