Re: Im not a mom but how do you "forget your child in a car"

There was an episode on tv (forget what show it was CSI or something like that)... I didn't watch it but my mom had seen it (it was a repeat) and when I started watching it she told me not to because it would really upset me and that she still thinks about it.
They tested the inside of the car and it was over 140 degrees!!! The baby looked fake--- completely dehydrated. I am not positive but I think it or parts of it were based off true events.
Anyway, after I decided not to watch it my mom told me what happened in it- and the parents planned to do this because the baby had something wrong with her and they wanted the life insurance money for her.
I don't understand how anyone could leave their or any child in a car either.

I'm a mom and even when I have a million things going on and my brain is fried, I would never, ever forget my kids in the car! Even when they were tiny babies I would talk to them the whole car ride (and now they don't shut up! Chat Icon ). To this day I am constantly glancing in my rearview mirror at them.

I agree with Stacey, these parents didn't forget. They wanted a few minutes to shop (or whatever) in peace...trust me, it is quite tempting sometimes, especially when I have to run into a place like 7-11 to grab a drink or something. Taking both kids out of their carseats, making sure they don't knock things off the shelves, etc. isn't fun when I am only going to be in the store for 30 seconds. But I wouldn't leave them alone, not for a second. Plus, it's against the law!

Thank Goodness the baby is OK.
I don't understand how this can happen.
I am a mother. Every traffic light I am turning my head to check on DS.
He has car seat toys that he loves to play with. Once it gets quiet, I check in my mirror to make sure all is OK.
Even when hes not in the car, Im turning around to check. LOL.
Total Habit.

I will never ever understand how people can do this...EverChat Icon

It's a pretty sad world when we have to have to teach parents how to remember to take their kids out of the car Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Whether she forgot or did it on purpose she's clearly incapable of taking care of another human being. This poor child needs to be taken away from her.

I've never forgotten my kids n the car.

It does happen. How does it happen? It does.

For everyone who is saying "how do you forget?" picture this...

You've had a change in schedule. You ask your husband to drop the baby off. He's driving away & the baby is asleep in the car. During his drive, he gets a few phone calls, he's playing with the radio. He starts thinking about work & what he has to do when he gets there.

Obviously it does happen. It happens more often to dads than moms since moms are usually the ones in charge of their children's care.

I would tend to think it may happen less to Dads. When I have DC in the car, it isn't often, so I am hyper-aware of the extra passengers. When I do things every day, sometimes I go on auto-pilot. I am checking the mirror constantly to see if they are asleep, poking at each other, need something, etc.

While I know I would never do it, I totally understand how people do.
When you have a normal routine and there is a change to it, stress involved from other sources, it could happen.
Somedays when you have more than one child, a fulltime job, a dh, a home and other stresses, you don't know if you are coming or going.

She didn't forgot, she just got caught. I don't believe any mother would ever "forget"Chat Icon they have their child in the car with them.

This is the truth!
We had a discussion similiar to this on parenting and Most of us said we would never leave a baby in the car, while a few others said if they were going to a 7-11 etc...they would. I was like Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Do you know if that is a fact that more men leave babies in the cars then women? Every story I have read so far have been women. Unless, the story is just bigger bc its the mother.

Re: Im not a mom but how do you "forget your child in a car"

Anyone think maybe she was lying about having forgotten?

Supposedly she forgot the baby was in the car right up until she saw the police activity outside and "realized" what was going on... what if she left the baby in there thinking she'd run in quickly, got tied up for longer than she thought or whatever, and when she saw the cops, figured she'd better freak out and play the "I forgot" card in order to avoid child endangerment charges and CPS visits?

Just a thought. Chat Icon
