I'm probably overreacting, but I'm really ticked off!
Last night Evan says to me “I saw my Aunt today and she said that when she was younger, women were only allowed to gain 20lbs when they were pregnant.” (she has never been pregnant btw)
WHY IS YOUR FAMILY TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH WEIGHT IM GAINING? I haven’t seen them, so I know its not a dig at me necessarily, but why has that even come up to be a topic of discussion???
Then Evan walks out of the bathroom and he's like "whats that look for?"

I have learned that some people will talk and say anything, sometimes just to hear themself speak. Don't worry about why they were discussing it and just ignore them. I'm sure you look fabulous!

My FIL did the same thing! He started speaking to me about fat preggo women and how they could be hurting the baby blah blah blah....get over it and talk about something manly. Womens weight is not your concern.

First of all that's abusrd. I would love to tell my body "you're only allowed to gain 20 lbs" somehow I don't think it would listen.
Even with exercise and watching what I eat, I have already gained 13 lbs at 18 1/2 weeks. It's just the way my body is. Don't worry, I'm sure you look great.

Re: I'm probably overreacting, but I'm really ticked off!
Dh's entire family did that to him along with "You know she'll never be as thin as she used to be, you better get used to it"
Dh never listened to them since they all smoke and drank while pregnant as well.
I gained over 70lbs with pregnant.
All I can say is I know alot more women who gained ALOT of weight and lost all of it then women who gained smaller amounts and are still holding on to it. Plus his family being so annoying helped me make sure I got my body back in gear since now it annoys them even more.
Don't listen to them. Some people gain alot and some don't. As long as your eating well and are comfy it shouldn't be anyone else's business.
I'm sorry they hurt you.

Don't listen to them! So, back then EVERY woman only gained 20lbs? Did babies all of a sudden become monsterously big or something? Was there one year when women were then allowed to gain more?
People don't reallize how ridiculous they sound

Re: I'm probably overreacting, but I'm really ticked off!
I feel for you and I dont think you are overreacting at all! Even though the comment wasn't directed at "YOU" it makes you wonder why the topic of weight gain came up at all?
For whatever stupid reason, people seem to think that they can say ANYTHING to a pregnant woman - things they would NEVER say to anyone else. They comment on our weight gain (or not gaining enough), our health, they feel they can touch us, etc.. I'm learning this firsthand, as I'm sure we all are!
I have gained 14 pounds (I'm 22 weeks) and my doctor says that is great. Yet I have gotten comments such as "are you SURE you are having a boy? Because you are carrying like a girl... ALL OVER" (yes I admit, my azz is huge and I am gaining everywhere as opposed to only in my belly - but I really resent the implication that I"m getting too fat, I already feel self-concsious enough! )
Anyhow - my point is that I am trying to grow a thick skin, since I realize this is going to continue to happen up until I deliver - and I'm sure THEN everyone will move on to telling me what I'm doing wrong when it comes to my baby !!

Re: I'm probably overreacting, but I'm really ticked off!
Oh give me a break! Pregnancy weight gain is ENTIRELY genetic, there is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent it, and if you're genetics say 40lbs and you only gain 20lbs, well, then, you're doing a HUGE disservice to your baby and your body! I ate sooooooooooo freakin' healthy, walked 2-3 miles a day the entire pregnancy and I STILL gained 45+lbs! And you know what? At the end of the day, it doesn't matter, because I lost it all within 12 weeks post-partum. I absolultely HATE when people make comments like that.

Re: I'm probably overreacting, but I'm really ticked off!
Thanks everyone!!!! I *knew* you guys would make me feel better!
I find it funny (not haha funny, odd funny) that once a woman announces she's pregnant its like a free-for-all for everyone to discuss topics that would seem touchy and nosy when the woman is not pregnant. I.e. weight, appearance, etc.
It can be so frustrating! URGH! but thank you so much girls, I really feel SO MUCH better.
ETA Felicia- we had the same thought! What is that about!? And I am NOT going to deal well with all the raising baby comments- guess thats what the parenting board will help me with! LOL

I have been wondering about it being genetic too!! I'm going to keep that in my mind while I'm developing my tolerance for idiotic conversations about how much weight I've gained.

Re: I'm probably overreacting, but I'm really ticked off!
My mom only gained 13 pounds when she was PG...and she had twins (my sister and I). She didn't know she was having twins because they didn't do u/s back then unless they thought something was wrong.
So...just because things were done a certain way back then...doesn't make them right.

Oh you'll get more than that, I assure you! I had one woman come up to me and tell me I'm definitely having a girl because my butt and hips widened... gee, thanks, I needed to hear that! And to boot, when I visited work while on maternity leave, one of the secretaries came up to me, slapped me on my hip and said "I'm going to call you "hippy" for now on"

I totally agree 100% with Beth. I did the same thing, well up until bedrest, but I still gained 45+ pounds. My body just liked to keep it in reserve! I gained about 50 pounds, and in my 5'3'' frame not good! I am 6 weeks PP and have lost 30lbs already, only 20 more to go to get to pre pg size 4-6!!
It's enough that pg women have to deal with their bodies changing out of their control, but then have to deal with idiotic people who don't know to keep their mouths shut!

Yeah, I noticed if you are spreading everywhere people say "Oh its a girl"! but if its small and in the front "oh its a boy"...How the heck u supposed to feel when people say "Oh its definitely a girl".

they also used to encourage women to smoke so that they would give birth to small babies....for some reason I think too many people feel the need to add in their silly pregnancy comments...brush it off....like you said she herself has never even been preggo...there for unless she is an OB/GYN she unqualified to make any pregnancy statements

Re: I'm probably overreacting, but I'm really ticked off!
unbelievable It gets me so mad! I cant stand when people make judgements about weight in pg women. Last night I went for my 15 week appointment. I gained about 4 pounds in 3 weeks (mind you, I lost weight prior to this when I had bad m/s so now I am almost back to the weight I originally started at). The nurse gave me a whole lecture on gaining too much weight and started telling me what I should and shouldnt eat. I dont eat junk food and I eat small meals throughout the day AND I said to her "Well, I originally lost weight because I was throwing up so wouldnt you think that when I started eating normally again I would gain it back?" I was so pi$$ed off...DH had to calm me down and of course I told the doctor what she said

thats really tacky! A nurse in an OBGYN office commenting on weight. You should have told her that you'd leave it up to the DR.

I was so angry that when I told dr., he was annoyed as well. If she is there the next time that I go, I am going to tell her not to weigh me and that I want the dr. to do it..I absolutely cannot stand her
