Immune or Progesterone Issues
I went to see a perinatal doctor/genetics counselor yesterday. He said I should have no extra worries when it comes to genetics which was a relief.
He said he is more concerned that I had a miscarriage and the result was a normal baby (chromosome wise). He said chromosome issues are usually the reason for an early miscarriage. Even though I only had 1 loss he is looking at other reasons to prevent more miscarriages. He said it could be a fluke thing but he also wants me to have some tests done before we try again.
One test is to check to see if I have a problem where my body is rejecting the pregnancy as if it is foriegn. He said if that is the case aspirin and/or a blood thinner could be the answer.
The other test is to check my progesterone levels at day 24 of my cycle. He said the test has to be done on day 24 to be accurate. I'm not sure how I will be positive I am on day 24 though since I only have had 1 cycle so far since being pregnant and I'm not sure how my cycles are yet. If the next one is 30 days I can go off 30 days (I got AF 30 days post d&c) but I think I will get AF before 30 days this month. I am on CD24 and I already have cramps so I think I will get it earlier than 30 days this cycle. He said if it is a progesterone issue we can try giving me progesterone in the first trimester.
Basically, I have these tests done to see if there are any issues and other than that after 3 cycles (he was just as adamant about 3 cycles as my OB) we try again and pray for the best.
Has anyone been diagnosed with either of these issues? He said sometimes doctors will just prescribe aspirin or progesterone without doing the tests to confirm but he wants the tests done first to see if these things are an issue for me or not.
I don't know how to feel about all of this I am glad he is treating me as if I had recurrent losses without me actually having to miscarry again but at the same time I am nervous. What if they find something? What if they don't?

it doesnt matter how long your cycles are... unless they are less than 24 days... you count 24 from the first day of full flow... so 24 days later would be CD24... Good luck!!!

Ok that makes sense. Duh! For some reason he had me under the impression I needed to have regular cycles and I was getting confused. I guess he meant it's only accurate on day 24 if you are past ovulation? So if I was having 45 day cycles the test may not be accurate at day 24? I was confused about that part

When I go to pick up my rx for the bloodwork from my OB I have to ask her. We were in there for over 1 hour and we got so much information that my head was spinning. I almost feel like we got too much information!

That is great that they are hoping to find some answers. My ob just said it could be afluke and try again. I don;tknow if we should be getting more answers. This whole process is so confusing. I know just how you feel.

If your cycles are regular, he's testing your blood at CD 24 b/c it wold be approximately 10 days post ovulation. That time fram would be the best to check progesterone levels to see if in fact you're ovulating, and that progesterone levels are high enough to sustain a pregnancy. Hope that helps!!

When I went for my doc appt in 2009 after I found out I was preggers my they were worried about the baby so they put me on progesterone. Sadly, it was a bit late and I lost the baby.
I found out I was preggers the end of Sept 2010 and I would test several days prior to getting AF since my doc told me to come in asap for blood work to check my progesterone. Well, I am glad I did because my level was way low and I was on the progesterone at only 4 weeks pregnant. I had to stay on it till I was 12 weeks, but now I am 22 weeks and everything is good.
My doc does not know why my progesterone is a problem since my pregnancy with my son I was fine. All in all being crazy cautious and taking tests like a nutcase I think saved my pregnancy.

Thanks for sharing. I'm sorry about your loss but it is great that you had a successful pregnancy afterwards.
I am more concerned about them checking my progesterone during my next pregnancy. I know if it is off during my cycle it could mean I have a luteal phase defect but I don't think that is the case.
If my progesterone level comes back normal now I'm not sure how that can guarantee that it won't drop at a random point in my next pregnancy? Say during week 7 or 8 which is when they think I lost the baby (I found out at my 9 week sonogram).
I did speak to the medical assistant at my OBs office and she told me no matter what they will run bloodwork as soon as I get a bfp to check the progesterone even if the test pre- pregnancy testing comes back normal. She said if it is low they'll give me progesterone but they only check it once. She made it seem like it can't just drop in the later weeks but from what I've read I think it can?
I have no idea. All these tests are making me nuts. I see my OB tomorrow and I have a ton of questions for her since I'm pretty sure we are going to try again in the next few weeks.

I have a luteal phase defect - my original OB was not much help - just prescribed clomid and that was supposed to be the answer - which it wasn't - so i did some research on the big bad internet (a site called TCOYF.com) that pointed me in the direction of natural progesterone cream. This stuff is amazing. The first cycle I tried it I got preggers and kept using it until week 12 and have a healthy little girl now.
For my second pregnany - it was a surprise so I wasn't using the progesterone cream and I miscarried at week 7.
My new ob said to come in as soon as I got a pos preg test and he would check my levels etc. Well I did - and was using the progesterone cream (which he supported) and he jokes that I must have been an hour pregnant - anyway he said my levels were fine and had me come in the following week to check them again. He was super supportive and said I could come in everyday if I wanted to - but I felt confident that using the cream was helping.
Anyway, look into Natural Progesterone cream if this is an issue for you- I honestly think that if I had used the NPC for my second pregnancy, it would have made it. I just wasn't thinking....Good luck to you...and fm with questions you might have...
