In your opinion...Does it pay to have your house painted professionally...
or DIY ????....We have a lot of high ceilings ( my LR is 17 feet), and the BR's have tray ceilings ....,My DH is very handy, but I almost feel like its worth it just to have it done, because he doesnt really have the time to do it, and with a toddler and a newborn, time is of the essence !!! .....I have no idea what it even costs to have a house painted , so any feedback /opinions would be great !

I definitely believe it's worth it if time is limited. This is something you want done and over with especially if you have small children..

Yes, absolutely. It's even quicker if the person you use does not need to tape before they paint. Some painters are so good they can edge freehand and if they're good, you would never know otherwise. I think it makes it that much quicker.

For us it was definitely worth it. We are not painters. We have cathedral ceilings and we got a family discount!

I agree.
I think it's worth getting a few quotes and go from there.

Re: In your opinion...Does it pay to have your house painted professionally...
I am a pretty good painter, and have done several rooms in our house in the past, but when we finished expanding our house, I hired someone. We had 1500 sq/ft of new house to paint, and I knew there was no way I could get that much done in any sort of reasonable time frame. They were done with everything in a few days. It would have taken me months!

With high ceilings and several rooms, I say yes, get a painter.
I would say no to just 1 room. But I hate painting ceilings. If you have a ceiling at 17 ft, by the time you get a ladder tall enough or rent one, you might as well let someone else do it. It would kill your neck and it will done professionaly and much faster.

IMO - yes. It was very expensive to get our whole house done, but it was finished in a few days instead of a few weeks and it was perfect. I was also pregnant when we moved in, so I was not painting either way If it's in your budget and you are limited on time, I highly recommend it!

Re: In your opinion...Does it pay to have your house painted professionally...
When we bought our house we had to paint every room, and we did it with the help of family. Now 2yrs later I want to repaint and I am looking to have it done proffessionaly. I know it's pricey, but to me it is worth it. I am thinking this summer having them do the living room, halway, kitchen, and bathroom

I honestly think ANYTHING is worth paying a professional to do IF you have the extra money and you don't ENJOY the project. -

Re: In your opinion...Does it pay to have your house painted professionally...
You've all made up my mind for me ...A painter it is....We had new construction and I'm tired of my house looking like a hospital ...Now to convince my DH ( he thinks because he CAN do something he SHOULD do it) I agree with him on some things with this, but painting is not one of them...I finally convinced him to let us hire someone to put our hardwood floors in, even though he is more than capable, and it was done in under a week, as oppsed to a little her and a little there Thanks everyone !!

I could not agree more! I used to enjoy painting.. but after painting an entire house, i never ever ever ever want to see that damn painters tape ever again! Hire someone to do it for you (if its in your budget) especially with the high ceilings. A room or two, i'd say suck it up and do it yourself, but a whole house?? no way

Re: In your opinion...Does it pay to have your house painted professionally...
For me, it would kill me to have someone paint what I can do. I painted our entire house by myself in 1 month (with the exception of the foyer that DH helped me with recently).
It was tiring, and annoying, but I couldn't see paying someone to do it. But, that was also bc we are trying to conserve our funds.
If you have the $ and can afford it, go for it!

Re: In your opinion...Does it pay to have your house painted professionally...
If you can afford the expense (and it is expensive!), the convenience and quickness of hiring professionals is certainly awesome.
But I'm a product of my mother—I won't pay someone to do something I'm capable of doing myself. (I enjoy painting and I'm good at it.)
We'll be moving soon and every room in our new house will be painted by me personally, even if it takes me all summer to do.
ETA: The way I see it, the money I'm saving on painters could furnish a room in my house.

Re: In your opinion...Does it pay to have your house painted professionally...
We would never (esp. DH) pay someone to paint. But, we were in a situation where we didn't need every single room done quickly and we could take our time. We finally got around to painting our 2-story foyer a few weeks ago (we moved in back in May). It also helps that we actually enjoy painting.

Uh-oh, I'm starting to sway again ....It would probably help my decision along if we had some painters come and give us an estimate , I know its pricy, just not sure how pricy and how they determine ( is it square feet etc ..????)

I look at things the opposite way. My time is very valuable, and I would rather pay someone with a week's worth of salary in order to save several weeks of my time. I can always make more money. I can't make more time with my family....

Re: In your opinion...Does it pay to have your house painted professionally...
The high ceilings wouldn't intimidate me, but the trayed ceilings would. I have no patience to tape like that. I have painted every room in my house, some more than once, including my LR with a vaulted 17+ ft ceiling.

Re: In your opinion...Does it pay to have your house painted professionally...
My entire house had to be painted when we moved in. I did most of the rooms with DH and some family help.
When it came time to do the section of my home with very high ceilings and tricky molding work, we hired a painter.

Re: In your opinion...Does it pay to have your house painted professionally...
After construction we were left with the entire main floor to paint. I thought about paying someone, but when I heard what my friend paid for a small apartment, I said noooo way!!!
It look us 3 months. we lived thru Thanksgiving, Christmas like that. It definatley sucked and you get sick of living in a mess.
I would say price it out, see if it is in your budget. Especially with little ones running around, it might be worth it to pay and have it be over with.
Good Luck!!
