infants with texture issues - solids
do they grow out of the gagging and puking
the first few spoonfuls of cereal, he makes a gagging face. he is usually OK with stage 1 (he's had squash, sweet potato, bananas and we just tried peas - BIG no go.
he started gagging on the 2nd or 3rd spoonful. i thought he was ok and then i heard the rumble his ENTIRE 9 oz morning bottle (from 2 hours previous) and his cereal and peas came up.
is it normal for them to gag like that? or could it just be that he didnt like the taste? he does tend to gag a little if we go back and forth between puree and oatmeal so im thinking texture?
i guess we just stick to either oatmeal or puree and do not go back and forth in the same feeding.

Re: infants with texture issues - solids
My son only gagged once, it was when I made his cereal too thick.
He is about 2 weeks older than your DS, and he eats oatmeal or rice cereal 2x a day. I mix it with formula and he eats about 4 tbs a serving.
What food is making him gag? He may just still be getting the hang of it. Any teeth yet?
My DS has two teeth now and I feel like he is doing better with eating.

it was peas although he has gagged with oatmeal. he seemed fine with bananas, squash and sweet potato.
he has 2 teeth coming in, not 100% in yet - just breaking through.

Re: infants with texture issues - solids
DS will eat shredded chicken no problem, he'll eat a whole pea, a steamed carrot, table food, he'll mash it up with his gums. This kid has no issues with food.
I had no fear, gave him a piece of smooshy, ripe mango. He gagged and threw it up. I think its just a texture thing, they don't know how to handle it, I guess it was a bit stringy in a way, but honestly I thought it had to be easier to eat than shredded chicken, but it was also slimy, and maybe he's just doesn't like the texture.

my dd had a similar incident with peas - I think she doesn't like the texture. table food is progressing very slowly, but she did fine with most other purees.

karin, mia had the same reaction to sweet potatoes(she has had pureed ones and loves them!) that DH & I had for dinner. i figured the were soft enough, and i still mixed with a little BM and she gagged and threw up a bit. i felt horrible but they get used to it!

Re: infants with texture issues - solids
DS had the worst gag reflex I have ever seen. Even his Dr's were surprised by it....He gagged on almost everything if it wasn't the right texture. Peas got him too. I think they were kind of grainy. I didn't give them to him after his incident. I switched to green beans and he was ok with them. Stage 2 Beech Nut has mixed veggies with peas in it and he was fine with that. I had to play with his cereal to get the right texture. I nailed it down pretty quick. At 7 months old I tried puffs. He gagged. I waited another month. He was ok with a few here and there. He didn't get Cheerios until a little after 10 months. He just turned 1 and he still will gag on stuff. Not as bad though and not as often...He gagged and threw up on scrambled eggs recently. If he doesn't like the way it feels, he won't eat it wither...I am going to mention it to his pedi tomorrow. He now loves real peas. Will eat them all day if I let him...
